KIHAP is the name it is currently operating under. Be careful out there..." Actually GM Annibale, founder of the World Combat Arts Federation, started this group. GM Sparky from Florida sits on the board. I believe they are trying to pull HKD people together under one roof. I do not know GM Annibale personally, but an instructor of mine has worked with him in the past and noted that he was a very talanted martial artist who liked to get on the floor. Ironic that he hooked up with Sparky. Jeremy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! I learned an old housewife trick to wash coloured clothes in a 50% mix of water and vinegar to set the colour, so each of my belts were soaked overnight in the mixture and then rinsed in cold water. Yes, I "smelled funny" for a few classes, but at least I kept my dobok white. As my TKD instructor (as well as in my karate experience) insisted that belts should never be washed, the belts remained unwashed after to preliminary soak. GM Sparky from > Florida sits on the board. I've chatted with Ed via email. He seems like an ok guy. Just that he has seemingly fallen in with a bad egg. As one person shared with me, one fellow associated with this group couldn't do a proper wrist throw just a short while ago. This person is now an 8th Dan. !!! Now that is one heck of an intensive training program... :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 18:22:58 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Easily_entertained_.....?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray: "...."Gm P" is the founder of the ICHF, International Combat Hapkido Federation......" Thought you would get a kick out a recent telephone call I received. Phone rings and the lady at the other end inquires about "self-defense" classes. I tell her I teach traditional Yon Mu Kwan Hapkido but if she is interested I teach a lighter course ("self-defense course") at a local junior college. I also recommended a kuk sool Hapkido teacher closer to her area. Should have done the trick, right? Nope. Ms. Uninformed goes on to ask if there "isn't something in-between. I don't want self-defense, but I don't want to spend years learning a martial art. Isn't there something called COMBAT HAPKIDO." Choking back the urge to tell her what I really thought, I let her know that there is probably some thing in the area. "So you are recommending them"? "No", says I, "I don't make referrals unless I have had firsthand positive experience with the school." "So you don't know anything about Combat Hapkido.?" "Yes, I know about them, but there is really nothing left to say. Good luck in your search." I wonder how other folks deal with calls obviously from the opposition. Why limit it to MA? Following this line of reasoning, why should not instructor "certification" of all coaches/instructors of Little League Baseball, Jr. All-American Football, parks & rec sports programs, soccer leagues, dance studios, gymnastics programs, adult sports leagues, church leagues, etc., be required? And when required, who will pay? First certification fees, then a minimum amount of insurance/bond follows, and so on, until the monetary considerations become prohibitive, both to instructors and the students they must pass the costs on to. <> No more than anything can be done to keep this from happening in any other kind of business. Some months ago a HKD school in our general metro area and bearing the same name as ours closed down without notice to their students. We fielded calls from both polite and angry former students of that school who had paid tuition and showed up to find an empty building. We explained that the Korean surname involved is a very common one and the closed school was not part of our association, nor connected with us. Will this betrayal color the MA community (and the name we share with the closed school) to these students forever? Sure, for some. But there are also those who realize that people are people and there are bad apples in every type of business. So far, six color belts and two BBs from the closed school have joined our school. If there is to be regulation involving business background, it should be done at the local level, by the city one applies for a business license in, not by some MA regulatory committee.
