Hello Eddie: a good example of your concern was an attempt by a Canadian Gov't to regulate martial arts in the 70's. Of all things they dumped us in with Boxing, and we were actually regulated by boxing commissions until we gave them a fight. The regulation came so suddenly that no one even expected it, let alone had a voice in the process. Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 25 Jun 2003 21:21:29 -0500 From: "David N. I keep turning your post over and can't seem to find a way past your reasoning. <> Dear Ray, Please bookmark the archives. Bruce and I agree :-) <> Is there, then, a way to increase the chances that the "honorable person" you mentioned, in fact, has "honorable" intent? <> No. <> How about past offenders, or multiple offenders who cross into new jurisdictions? What about people who have all the right "paper" but have little or no idea about appropriate teaching methods, business practices, or social responsibility? I am right there with you about the consumer needing to be informed and aware, but the charlatan does his dirty work BECAUSE he is adept at misrepresentation. <> OK here's the karmic um/yang of capitalism. Boo boo the fool might get ripped off. If you're Darwinistic your ok with that and if you're more of a Marxist you'll loose a lot of sleep over that one. You make a valid point on misrepresentation, but I still believe the consumer can/should educate themselves before expending funds for services. Let's look at one of our other service industries, Credit Cards. I believe interest rates vary from about 8.9% to 32%, annual fees vary from $0 to $72, monthly maintenance fees vary from $0 to $6, and late and returned check fees, along with grace periods vary widely. All of this information is misrepresented in the smallest fine print known to man, but it's even more regulated than what we are proposing for the MA community, so. Do we think the "leaders" that would be selected by government polliticians could create a better system for martial arts? I think not. Worse comes to worse, I'll be teaching "interpetive dance" in my garage :-) Yours in Jung Do, Charles (underground with Michael) Richards __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! ClickKorea (http://www.clickkorea.org) has launched a new website on Korean arts and culture. This will serve as a valuable source of information about various cultural events of Korea such as concerts, exhibitions and performances. Event listings include photos and detailed information, classified into current events, which can be searched by date or genre. News and essays on Korean culture are accessible. ClickKorea is not merely a search tool for cultural events as it links to a variety of sites dealing with Korea, including Koreana - a quarterly on Korean arts and culture, Korea Focus - a bimonthly on current affairs in Korea, Koreanist.net - Korean Studies Scholars and Students Database. This website is expected to quickly become a foremost information resource on Korean culture. ClickKorea has been developed by the Korea Foundation. ============================== Hyo-Yeon Park Program Officer The Korea Foundation http://www.kf.or.kr ClickKorea: Access to Korean Arts & Culture http://www.clickkorea.org --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Michael Rowe" To: Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 13:35:18 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: Easily Entertained Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Bruce writes: <> I reply: Well obviously she is not from the opposition. Why limit it to MA? Following this line of reasoning, why should not instructor "certification" of all coaches/instructors of Little League Baseball, Jr. All-American Football, parks & rec sports programs, soccer leagues, dance studios, gymnastics programs, adult sports leagues, church leagues, etc., be required? And when required, who will pay? First certification fees, then a minimum amount of insurance/bond follows, and so on, until the monetary considerations become prohibitive, both to instructors and the students they must pass the costs on to....." I am hearing the same objection each time this issue of regulation and certification is raised--- "who will pay" or "who will regulate" or "what about the little guy". Sharon, I am guessing that anybody with any business accumin will have anticipated most of what we are talking about anyhow. When I started teaching I had my liability insurance, had gobs of educational hours from a university, and had taken enough sports medicine hours just in case I would have had to have met some as-yet undetermined criteria. What exactly is it that you are afraid of? Is it POSSIBLE that a licensing body could come in and close somebody down? Sure anything is possible. But without regulation how many schools have you heard about that sorely needed to be shut down and weren't! How many times do we have to hear the same tired stories about someone who took the money and ran, or abused their students? But thats not what eating most of the people who are thinking about this topic. I have sat in on some bull-sessions where teachers of commercial schools looked for ways to force the students to committ to instruction for a long enough duration that the lights were consistently paid. And so, the "contract school" was born. OK. How about "Turnabout is fairplay". What about something that tests the instructor to see what kind of committment HE is going to make. How about being bonded for the tuition amount per student times the student population of his school? How about the amount of students times the monthly rent of the building held in escrow? If some new MA instructor doesn't have the cash to meet the responsibilities shouldn't that tell folks something to start with? If folks are so worried about the rights of the teachers and school managers how about that these teachers and school managers come up with some process or protocols to improve the quality of their peers? I've heard people bitch here on this Net about some pretty unsavory characters. How come their still in business? IMVHO THIS is where the real issue is. I said it before and I'll say it again. The bozo-s are in business because folks WANT them in business. Its martial theatre sold on the cheap. Folks want someone who they can go to who will sell them the "illusion" of being a "very dangerous poi-son" (to quote Rocky's trainer). That includes the flashy uniform, fancy cert and exotic material. And yes, that includes student abuse and injury as well. Why? Because folks would rather put up with that than admit to themselves that all the talk about martial myth is just that--myth-- and the only way one masters the skills is with hard work. Its not like you're gonna get the couch potatos to trade in WATCHING MA in the movies for actually studying in a class. Too much like work. :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 11 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" To: Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 15:53:53 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] MA Regulation Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Well now that you mention it Sharon, there is a movement to regulate the teaching of yoga here in the USA. It is being pushed by one the leading yoga associations (there are almost as many as MA ones). I simply will not have anything to do with that organization (my way of protesting regulations). On a lighter side, as I also teach yoga, the local PBS station in Cincinnati filmed my morning yoga class today! That was almost as fun as throwing someone! Same grin! Jere R.
