Not necessarily books that show technique, but rather more focused on the learning, philosophy, spiritual side of martial arts. Any recommendations? However, I thought for the purposes of brevity I would tease out what I thought the greatest difference was between our two positions. "....N: Of course none of this is responsive to my original question of, "What type of society do we want to live in? Do we want the government to try to protect us from every evil and every possible unfavorable outcome?....." Me: In a word- "no". I don't believe that government has that power. However, I DO believe that the time has come for minimal and uniform standards administered on a State basis just as with any other licensed or certified business. Getting a real estate person to earn a license or even drivers to take regular tests does not guarentee either good real estate people or good drivers. However, there is apparently a correlation between well-policed commerce and quality even if it is not a 1:1 correlation. "....N: And which of the myriad KMA organizations are you referring to? Which single organization has jurisdiction over the whole of KMA. (e.g., there are 3 ITF's)..." Me: I think we are well beyond the possibility of the KMA policing themselves. Perhaps they can assist in an advisory role of some type (I don't count on it :-) ) but it remains for the State to provide criteria and licensing to make sure that folks are minimally prepared to do what they say they are going to do. BTW: As I said in the beginning I just wanted to tease out what I thought were the more salient points. If you feel I need to lend more weight in another direction let me know, 'kay? Jere R. Hilland www.hapkidoselfdefense.com FYI... We use a 10 gup system. It is 3 months each rank except for the last two - they are 6 months each. They are not broken out in months but are listed by number classes (the months are based on attending 5 classes per week). I do not have an average since I moved up north, but I have been here (up north) for 5 years now and I may have my first hapkido chodan testing before Jackson in 2004 (he is also a kukkiwon chodan), he is the big fellow I usually throw around in Jackson and my first student since leaving the great Lone Star State. <<>>> --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
