I am not quite sure how to answer. Are you asking for the requirements for the test for Cho-dan itself or the way in which the curriculum is organized through the guep ranks culminating in Cho-dan? In my own case, each of the subsequent guep tests only incorporates a small amount of the previous tests with the lions' share of the test focused on the material learned in the previous rank. In the case of Cho-dan testing the greatest focus of the test would be over material focused on in in Level 4 training (Brown Belt) which includes multiple attacks from either grabs--- but more importantly--- off the fist. We call it "free form". There is also considerable focus on chokes, locks and pins. Of course, since we also do hyung there is the need to demonstrate competence in this area as well as the ability to provide interpretation or application of hyung moves. Personally I also have students demonstrate the ability to teach a couple of selected techniques (beginning at Yellow Belt) to another, but that is more my pre-occupation with teaching than an actual requirement for Yon Mu Kwan Hapkido. If you would give me a specific area of concern I would be glad to share my thoughts. My oldest son Manuel tested for II Degree. We are trying to associate here in California with the WTF as well as the ITF. But thats not here nor there. He had to do Po-Un, Ge-Beak, Eui-Am and Keumgang. Me myself in all my schools we use strictly ITF Hyungs until the half Brown/Black Belt were Koryo is introduced. It usually takes the student 36 months to get to Black Belt. We use Self Defense, one, two, & three step sparring etc. We have decided to incorporate the WTF Poomse at the Black Belt levels just to give the student a much better edge if he/she moves or "quits" when they get to their new school they can continue on as a black belt. I don't offer Kukki Certification yet but I'm working on it. Another thing, we make braking concrete optional, but, you should be able to break as many as you hold dan ( II Dan = 2 concrete slabs, III Dan = 3 concretes etc). Every school is different I tested @ Kukiwon back in 1986 for II Dan and all I had to do was one of the Tae-Guk poomse and Koryo and Kyorugi for 3 minutes, it was the easiest test I'd ever taken, My I Degree ITF Black Belt test lasted three whole days we did all the Hyungs from Chon-Ji - Choon-Moo, 1,2, &3 step sparring, Breaking single and multiple, Free Sparring Patterns all 10 of them, Self Defense Techniques (against Club, Knife & Gun) & last but not least oh yes we did Sparring single & multiple. Thank you for letting me post. Yours in Taekwon-Do Mr. Manuel K. For those of you who are Korean-literate perhaps you will fill the rest of us in on the particulars. Here goes-- www.mooto.com.kor/webzine/news_view.asp?news_no=2547 >From what I have been led to believe the article identifies a possible source of Kuk Sool Won material in a rather dated piece of Chinese Boxing material. This wouldn't be so bad except that WKSWA has always been awfully adamant that their art reflects material essentially native to Korean culture. This article would seem to suggest otherwise. I have also taken the chance to print off a copy of the article so if their people who would be willing to translate and are, for some reason unable to get the URL to come up, let me know. Green ( 2 forms, 3 1steps, 3 mo. ) Purple ( 2 forms, 3 1steps, 3 mo. ) blue ( 2 forms, 3 1steps, 3 mo. ) Brown ( 2 forms, 3 1steps, 6 mo. ) Red ( 2 forms, 1 weapon, 6 mo. ) 1st Dan (3 forms, 2 weapons, 3 1steps, 1 year) 2nd Dan (1 form, 6 weapons total (4 new forms), 2 years ) There is a sparing, fitness, self defense, and breaking requirement for each level. At the White through Blue belt, most people do test at the 3 mo. tests( 6 mo. for blue to brown). Alot of people go longer than 6 mo. for Brown to Red and Red to Black. At Blue belt, our instructor gets very picky with stances in forms and techniques. While hardly anyone tests and fails (he does not let people test that are not ready), it does happen. I am curious, do other schools have low failure rates at tests? In the 8 or 9 years I have been training, I have seen very few people fail their belt tests (mostly testing for black belt interesting enough).... Best regards. Choi, but in the past there was no way the ITF would permit you to also be involved with the Kukkiwon. If you even taught the Kukki-TKD forms in an ITF school you'd be kicked out of the org.
