I have met several TKD masters who are African American females at TKD tournaments. Master Lynnette Love from MD. is a superstar in TKD. She is VP of USTU. She won Gold in the 1988 Olympic Games and Bronze in the 1992 Olympic Games. You can check her out on the USTU web site ( http://www.ustu.org/ ) . Good luck. I was happy to see that a much more balanced discussion was there http://www.ustu.org/generalinfo/history.shtml and was quite surprised to see that the 5 Tenets of TaeKwon Do promulgated by Choi, Hong Hi were listed verbatim. Pehaps this is a sign of greater cooperation between the WTF (or at least, the USTU) and the ITF? --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 8 Jul 2003 20:38:13 -0400 (EDT) From: A Future Computer Scientist To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] reply to message #3 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net There's an african american woman who's a black belt in TKD. We lost the best student we had about 6 months ago, i mean this man was amazing with his kicks and he had only 6 months experience. The reason he left was because he got bored of the class as we seem to practice our patterns more than anything else. If it was just these reasons alone i doubt i would say anything as i also practice another martial art and get enough self defense from this but its just that of the students we have left they are complaining that we are not getting enough self defense tuition. I am at a loss as to what to do as i really like my instructor and Tae Kwon Do but i do feel that unless somethin is done the seniors will leave the class. any help would be geat....." Let me say before you take umbrage at my words I mean you no harm. I can only say "welcome to the real (KMA) world". What you are experiencing is very typical of KMA schools for a number of reasons. Some students leave at the drop of a hat---- and--- some students stay on and on and you can't get them to stop coming with threats! :-) It comes back to human nature and not to the curriculum. The fact is that KMA can be tedious, painful, boring and repetitive. In this way it is no different that any other kind of training in any other kind of sport. If you are not particularly invested in baseball, hitting fungoes will get old, real fast. If football isn't your thing, even a few scrimages of "touch" will be a few too many. Maybe you have gotten all you can out the teacher you have right now based on what your goals were when you signed up, yes? Not all schools are identical and some teachers put different emphasis on different things. The teacher you have seems to put more weight on hyung and less on self- defense. If thats not what you are into then either you face this situation as the "cutting edge" of your growth, or you admit that this simply is not you purpose in studying TKD and you seek out a teacher whose intentions parallel your own more. Whatever you choose, the decision will NEVER be a PERFECT fit. The work comes in as you accomodate yourself to what the world has to offer. FWIW. Hello Bruce: This position is likely taken because of the belief that the border regions between Korea and China shifted, and the arts practiced in that region are claimed as being Korean at one time. Sincerely, Rudy BTW, I have tried to contact you several times, and your mail comes back to me as undeliverable. --__--__-- Message: 12 Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 13:56:52 -0400 From: Rudy Timmerman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?WINDOWS-1252?Q?Kuk_Sool_v/s_Kong_Shin_Bup=99?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Kong Shin Bup provides its practitioners with training in: acupressure > healing techniques, meditation, breathing, forms, weapons, punching, > kicking, > throwing, archery, horseback riding, falling, acrobatics, joint locks, > water > techniques, pressure points, and a myriad of self-defense techniques > that are totally > compatible with one another.
