Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello Everyone! It has been a while since I've seen the Digest. Today is my first day back at work, and I re-enabled my subscription. I have a healthy, 12# little girl. She is 11 weeks old. Delaney Lynn Braud was born on April 22 weighing in at 7 lbs 4 ozs. Everything went extremely well. I didn't think I would miss reading the Digest, but once it becomes a part of your day, it's like another family! This post also has a question... I'm resuming training, but I believe I have a cracked tailbone. I had a c-section where they pushed down pretty hard on my abdomen. It is very painful going from a lying to sitting position on a hard floor. I can sit up just fine on a soft surface. I also have some sciactic (sp?) nerve pain down my left hip and leg. This is similar to the pain experienced late in my pregnancy. Question: what can I do to ease the pain, what should I avoid, and will it ever go away? I plan on beginning testing soon for my second degree, and I don't want to do this if I have to limit myself ~ (the same reason I postponed all testing during pregnancy). Just looking for some friendly advice... I asked my doctor, and she had no knowledge of martial arts, so her advice was pretty generic. I know it's not life-threatning, but I'm sure that some of you out there have had a cracked tailbone before! :) Best regards, Mary Braud [demime 0.98e removed an attachment of type text/x-vcard which had a name of mbraud.vcf] --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Tom" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] a few problems Date: Wed, 9 Jul 2003 16:29:18 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have purchased tapes from http://www.taekwondoresources.com/ListVideos.asp in the past and have been very impressed. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt Kerr" To: Sent: Tuesday, July 08, 2003 7:55 AM Subject: [The_Dojang] a few problems Hello all, i am relatively new to martial arts and was wondering if anyone could help me. I have been looking unsuccessfully for ages now it seems for Tae Kwon Do sparring tips or mpegs on the internet. On a few occasions i have been lucky to find a few fights or forums that showcase such things but on the whole my search has been less than fruitful. I would very much appreciate it if someone could help me out. Also what is the best way to approach an instructor. Before i write on i do not want anyone to feel that i am wishing to be disrepectful. The situation is that our martials arts school has only been open for about a year and i am one of the more senior belts in the class and i can see that the class is dwindling away. We lost the best student we had about 6 months ago, i mean this man was amazing with his kicks and he had only 6 months experience. The reason he left was because he got bored of the class as we seem to practice our patterns more than anything else. If it was just these reasons alone i doubt i would say anything as i also practice another martial art and get enough self defense from this but its just that of the students we have left they are complaining that we are not getting enough self defense tuition. I am at a loss as to what to do as i really like my instructor and Tae Kwon Do but i do feel that unless somethin is done the seniors will leave the class. any help would be geat. I had a cracked tailbone. Bothered me for about 10 or 15 years before the pain from sitting on hard surfaces finally went away. But I never had any pain outside of the localized area of my butt (please, no 'pain in the butt' jokes). I'd say check with an orthopedist. Bad for you? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Note the following article on the kata Sanchin. Seems that rather robust danjan breathing would have similar impact on the body. Comments? Ray Sanchin Breathing: Are you hurting yourself? It has long been known that dynamic tension katas were of questionable value, despite being strongly supported by those who have been taught to do them. Just as hypertension is damaging to the body over a long period of time, such artificial spiking of the vascular, cranial, and pulmonary pressures is NOT good for you and will do some damage, especially if you happen to have a predisposition to hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, or congenital vascular abnormalities (A-V malformations, aneurysms, etc). There are benefits to breathing control, but it appears physiologically that sanchin hard ibuki breathing should go the way of knuckle toughening, knuckle pushups, and straight leg situps- DON"T DO IT. If you want to work on muscular dynamics, use weight training with proper breathing control, including kata with weights for resistive exercise and balance control. For breath control and focus, it woudld be safer to use taichi style soft breathing and concentrate on centering, rather than using the extreme isometric contraaction of sanchin style forms. It is possible to focus on muscular dynamics without doing the damage that such isometric contraction produces. There are adverse effects to the heart (dysrhythmias) Lungs (increased pulmonary pressure), kidneys (transient hypertension), eyes (increased intraocular pressure). Do small amount of damafge for long enough, and the body can no longer repair itself. . Taichi has been shown to have positive health benefits, where sanchin style isometric contraction does not. Just a thought, for those who insist on doing the kata "full bore", the body is a wonderful machine, and will adapt to most abuse, however, there are limits, and sanchin goes beyond those limits, just like straight leg situps, knuckle pushups, and traditional hand toughening. Just because Joe Blow did it and survived, doen't make it good for you. Everyone who does knuckle toughening develops some degree of arthritis. Everyone who does isometrics does some degree of barometric damage to various organs, everyone who smokes does some damage to their lungs and heart.
