The Houston information can be had by emailing JKN Kat Kelly direct. Date: Saturday, July 27 Hosts: Masters Randy Stigall and Glenn Gavin Place: American Academy of Korean Martial Education 6015 Hillcrest Ct. Downers Grove, IL 60516 Time: 2pm - 6pm Fee: $35.00 or $40.00 at the door To pre register with Pay Pal (Visa- Mastercard) by July 15th, email kwanjang@sympatico.ca I would like to thank Ray for allowing this shameless plug. I had written several posts that must have been covered on the lost issue of the DD. My answer to the Kuk Sool v/s/ Kong Shin Bup™ question was apparently received directly by Jason, so there is no need to resubmit it. I also had sent a message of appreciation to Headmaster Cyrus and Masters Stigall and Gavin for making the Chicago event possible, and I thank my student JKN Kat Kelly for her dedication and drive to make the Houston trip possible. I might add that the Houston event will have Masters Hodder, Trudeau, Mc Henry, and Evans there, so we should have a great time. I will be assisted by my loyal student, Master Keatly, at both events, and we will do our best not to disappoint anyone. On August 21st (yes it IS on a Thursday), I will host Master Geoff Booth at my dojang in Canada. Fee $35.00 or $40.00 at the door. For folks who want to make a long weekend out of it, I am willing to work with anyone who wants to stay for more. The Thursday session with Master Booth begins at 5 pm and it will run until we drop. I will open my Dojang to all visitors who wish to work out with us on Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, free of charge, but you MUST let me know you are coming! For more info, please contact me at kwanjang@sympatico.ca I would like to point out one more important thing. Notice the way the folks from GM West's organization, NKMAA, and the Australian Hap Ki Do group work in harmony. This show that there CAN be cooperation between competing groups, as long as the leaders of these groups leave politics to politicians and focus on what is good for their students. I can't wait to get back to Jackson in March, and I urge NKMAA members to plan for it NOW! The conclusion is that we need to stop doing that thing or practice. Can I, for one minute, advocate for the voice of reason here? Anything, ANYTHING will be harmful if done to excess. Moderation is the key to anything. Sanchin has been used for many generations and I can see that if someone uses it to extreme they are probably gonna hurt themselves. Fine; no arguement there. However, Ibuki breathing and its counterpart Ikagi (sp?) or "reversed" breathing have their place in training. Most Hapkido people I know still practice various forms of dan jon breathing which requires dynamic tension to the skeletal muscles and diaphram. But I bet that if a person spends a half-hour doing diaphramatic breathing, under tension--- especially if done incorrectly--- they are going to put themselves at risk. No doubt. Many times during my warm-up or prior to class I will do some Yoga asanas and one of them if "the Plow". I have heard how this is very bad for the body due to the incredible strain it puts on the neck and spine. All the same I have been doing it for a number of years and Indian practitioners have been doing it for centuries. You just don't "drop into it" all at once. Moderation is the key. Maybe we need to think about helping Americans not to want to jump into things with both feet all the time, or always go to extremes in their practice. But simply cutting out anything where there is the potential for injury isn't the solution. Had a question for y'all KMA'ers out there, especially in HKD or other arts where you get to "abuse" your partner :) Is there a Korean terminology equivalent to Uke or Nage / Tori / Shite, depending on whether you are the "abuser" or "abusee"? :) It always seems like there should be a corresponding term for each of those... Dear Melinda, Bravo! I applaud your effort. People who are plus sized should be encouraged to work out. Just like kids, one of the easiest ways to include someone in your culture is to have the uniform dress available as soon as possible. Telling a prospect "I'm not sure if I have that size uniform so I'll have to special order it" goes a long way to reminding them how far out of shape they are. In this society that does more to discourage them from starting becuase in an embarassing way it reminds them that they don't fit in. Which is exactly why they need a caring qualified fitness professional to help them achieve their fitness goals. To answer your question in about 50 prospects and 34 active students I have one woman with a size 7 belt and had one adult male who was size 9. We squeezed him into a size 8, which eventually fit him. (about 4% of my market is plus sized). I would say the market for size 9&10 blackbelt trim would be as small as size 0 and 1 blackbelts. I don't see a big need for a size 9 that fits a person 6'-6", but more like a person that is 6'-0" and 350#. I would suggest that you offer the following sizes 4 Relaxed Fit (most large breasted women and post pregnancy women) 5 Relaxed Fit (The classic american male pot belly not tall enough for a 7) 6 Relaxed fit (For people over size 44 waist and under 6'-3") 7 Relaxed fit (For people over say 50 waist and under 6'-3") 8 Relaxed fit (For people about 300-350# but under 6'-3") A would base the price point on actual material used plus a little higher than normal mark-up as they will have a lower demand and longer shelf life. Retail plus size pants (including tall) are about 20-25% above "rack-sizes" prices... Good Luck, Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! (Having just lost 65lbs) one of my bigger challenges used to be find a dobok that could fit around my waist comfortably and also having the top fit properly. The main challenge was the top would be too long with the bottom coming near the knees and the seems for the shoulders coming too near the elbow. I have one student in this position today and they would very much enjoy a better fitting uniform instead of taking a gargantuan one and cutting it down because they are only 5'6. I'm not sure this is the market you are addressing though?
