I don't know if you have the answers, but they are put out as food for thought. 1. Is the source of the article relaible? 2. Who is this guy? 3. Was research actually done, or is this guy rendering an opinion, possibly in the absence of facts? 4. I noticed that the author's credentials state that he is a Registered Nurse, in what field? Does he actually practice in the field of cardio-pulmonary medicine? I am not saying that the conclusions are wrong, just I ask alot of questions before accepting any thing as being the definitive word. Just a few thoughts. Hope they help. Here is your AAU Taekwondo Newsletter for July 2003. AAU Taekwondo competitions feature both Olympic and Point sparring, and traditional Taekwondo forms, including WTF, ITF, and TSD/MDK forms may be performed. For more information visit http://www.aautaekwondo.org In This Issue: *Destiny Lieder wins the 2003 "Chris Canning Award of Excellence" *AAU Tournaments & Events Schedule *Destiny Lieder wins the 2003 "Chris Canning Award of Excellence" Destiny Lieder of Tomball, Texas is the winner of the 2nd Annual "Chris Canning Award of Excellence" which was presented at the 2003 Youth and Adult National Taekwondo Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee. The award was presented to Destiny during the opening ceremonies on July 3, by Rick Blair, Chief National Referee and Executive Board Member of the National AAU Taekwondo Program. The award, established in July 2002, honors the memory of Chris Canning and his life's accomplishments. The standards of the award require the winner to have demonstrated excellence in competitive martial arts, high scholastic achievement, and heavy involvement in their community helping others. These attributes, in conjunction with living the tenets of Taekwondo, were the foundation of Christopher James Canning, for whom the award was named. By winning the award, Destiny received a beautiful trophy and a one thousand dollar scholarship to be used for further martial arts training or higher education. Destiny, not only met the standards of the award but exceeded them. She is a 17 year old, 3rd Dan, and has been training for approximately 5 years. Destiny has won gold medals at the State, Regional, National and Junior Olympic competitions and was a member of the AAU National Team in 2002. As in martial arts, she has excelled in her academic career. As a member of the National Honor Society, she has maintained a straight "A" average for the past three years while being involved in the church choir, a member of the school track team, and now a member of her school's yearbook staff. She has committed much of her time in her community helping with teaching Sunday school, participating in youth group activities helping the elderly, and supporting a child through Compassion International. In the last year she has done mission work in Northern Texas and in Mexico. In addition to her own demanding workout schedule, she finds time to teach at the family Taekwondo school on a regular basis. Last year's inaugural winner, Kurt Fuhrman, presented the trophy to Destiny following Master Blair's speech. In so doing, Destiny joins Kurt and Chris in maintaining the standards of the award, exemplifying the legacy, and providing leadership to the youth of today. Others can emulate their example, within the AAU Taekwondo program, as they choose to traverse the same path. As Master Blair stated in his address, "These young men and women are outstanding people whom we are proud to call AAU Taekwondo athletes." Our most sincere congratulations go to Destiny for her outstanding achievement. *Order AAU Merchandise Online Need an AAU coach's shirt, AAU patches, pins, ties, training videos, or gup rank certificates? I always tell my students that the karatedo guys who do sanchin usually look great, but they seem to die off about about 60, which I tend to attribute (rightly or wrongly) to the stress on the heart. Remember how Elvis died? He died on the pot, straining at a stool. There's a nice application for everyone. Just as we breath out when we punch, we should do the same on the pot. Don't hold your breath and give yourself a heart attack! Bathroom Hoshinsul! Oh, and for those guys who INSIST on doing Sanchin, you ought to go look at the Chinese version. It is done much faster and with open hands. It was set up in a park in Kentucky, just a few miles from where I was visiting and where I grew up. I happened to be teaching a seminar in that park (a rather large park), not too far from the wall's location. On some of the breaks we took time to pay our respects. Makes me even more interested in visiting the real wall in DC. One of the fun and new things we tried was full-contact unpadded sparring in the park after the sun went down. Full-contact engagements in gyms or in the light of the day are one thing, but full-contact sparring outside and in the dark made for an excellent learning experience. After all, when/where are you more likely to be attacked? Give it a try sometime... Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Luc T. I am 5'6" tall and quite large. (limber but large). I have to buy a size 8 heavy weight and tailor it to fit. and can only get in the white ones with drawstrings. I would definitely love to have something that would actually fit better. Relaxed fit (more thigh room) would be a plus for us ladies. In our classes - we have quite a few moms/dads come in that are large. we sell quite a few 6-8's. None of these people have been over 5'8" tall. It would be great to be able to sell them something that they don't have to cut many inches off of to get to fit!! R. West Hello JR: I am honored by your comments, because I know you don't pass them around lightly. In my last post on the wonderful friendship and respect we have forged, I forgot one major item. While it IS possible for competing groups like ours and Geoff's to support one another, I must add that each one of us took a long hard look at the other before urging our students/members to "go learn". I feel our support for each other is based on your comments above, as neither one of us would have offered such support if we did not feel comfortable with what the other presented. In other words, I send my people to you because I know you have good technique, and I invite Geoff to my Dojang for the same reason. I'll go even one step further. I would not mind at all if any (or all) of my students/members joined JRs organization. I don't prevent my students or members from (or force them to) belonging to other organizations, and I even encourage it (as long as the other organization has good things to offer). I believe this will not harm NKMAA in any way, and I actually feel that I do my students/members a service that is good for NKMAA. Both JR and I have actually referred members or potential new members to one another if this was in the member's best interest. Such care for our members' well being is bound to pay off for all concerned. For example, I think next March's seminar in Jackson will be the biggest ever:) Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "balach hussain" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003 18:50:26 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] learning martial arts on the internet! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net   Hi to all, //\\ My name is Balach and I'm 19, I started learning (WTF) TaeKwonDo 10 months ago (at www.azamtaekwondoacademy.cjb.net) and last month I tested (and succeeded) for my green belt- I am from Pakistan. //\\ While learning any MA, I think that (almost) everyone wants practicality, and as novices we judge and understand every move by seeing the instructor do it perfectly. But unfortunately when it comes to martial arts websites they usually have quite a lot of information regarding simple as well as complex moves in theory but with diagrams or hand sketches, if at all (which is not the case mostly)! The problem here is that one needs to learn the complete procedure of each move e.g: taking example of the side kick, if only the final position of arms head and leg is shown, someone might hurt himself while taking off incorrectly (i.e, incorrect movement of joints and the base leg, etc). What such a person would like is maybe a video or clear animation with different angles, so that he/she may learn correctly. when it comes to Masters or Grand Masters u r told that they r working for promotion of martial arts and when u go around u will find their instructional tapes ready for sale!, which ofcourse is not feasible for people living in 3rd world countries like me, (usually they r not shipped to these areas and they are really expensive as well. I pay 2$ as monthly fees for my classes and some students can not even pay that!)! Can anyone please suggest any place on the web where i might get instructional vidoes (short clips will be easiear to download) for free, so as to learn better and while at home on days when i dont go to our DoJang ('coz we have only 3 days of practice here.)  Thank u. -Balach (www.truemartialartist.cjb.net)   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* --__--__-- Message: 11 From: "eric mcguire" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] What to do in Seoul Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003 15:21:41 -0600 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The Royal Palace (Kyoung Boke Goong) is a must see. The size and beauty of this building is breathtaking. Also, there is a museum that tells about Korean History. As far as martial arts, you can't go a city block without running into a Dojang. Most Korean Instructors don't mind if you watch and even sometimes, they don't mind if you partcipate in class. >From: "Luc T.
