Go to the Kukkiwon. You can just walk in and look around even if you don't know anyone there. Also check the museum to the rear of the Kukkiwon, upstairs in a separate building. Check out some of the palaces/museums around the city. Especially the War Memorial museum. Walk around Insa-dong, the arts/crafts area of the city. A good subway system. You can easily make sense of it and get around the city pretty easily. Maybe catch a HDGD class or a Taekkyon class. Make sure you get a Bulgogi-burger or two... Big Ken can tell you all about the late-night life joints. I personally didn't avail myself of any of that. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it! :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "John Johnson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] What to do in Seoul Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003 21:43:06 +0000 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net During the even most tourist attractions are closed, but there are a lot huge markets to see. Go to Dong-dae-moon or Myeong-dong Markets for an amazing time with a few thousand of your closest Korean friends. Like Mr. McGuire said, there are hundreds of dojangs around, so just take your pick. But, if you don't have a guide or speak/read Korean, it may be difficult to locate one and talk to an instructor. However, most dojangs are not open on the weekends, so ensure you go during the week. If you want to see how Koreans unwind from their stressful workday, go to Hongdae, Shinchon (nearby Hongdae), Kangnam or Itaewon if you want to be around some foreigners who could give you more specific information. In Itaewon, there's a bar called "Big Electric Cat" and a great live rock band plays on Saturdays. Good luck and have fun. John A. Bad for you? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net William: I must query you concerning your comments about "knuckle push-ups" in your response to Ray's question on Danjan breathing. I don't do straight leg setups (just crunches) and do no knuckle toughening specifically, but I do use knuckle push-ups in my training, specifically to strengthen my wrists. I've been using them for about 2 years and my wrists are much stronger now and noticed no effects on my knuckles to date (but 2 years in not long term). So please comment on the long term effects this training may have on the body. Thank you for pointing out questionable practices that affect us all. Learn and modify! The key word is correctly. The Sanchin form is a hard chi kung form for the external. Besides TKD, I practice Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu which is an internal/external martial art. We do Hard Chi Kung and Soft Chi kung. I can tell anyone interested in any type of chi kung to look for a reputable instructor and never learn any type of internal/external breathing from any article. You can do serious damage to your body when performed incorrectly. What type of surface do you do them on? We used to primarily do them on something like rough concrete, i.e. something that will toughen the knuckle and the skin. When you first started doing them your knuckles would often bleed a bit, to more than a bit. Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003 22:17:25 -0500 From: "David N. Nanta (Just Cookin') is a comedic drum performance show with some interesting fighting in the middle. It runs year round and is worth seeing over and over again. Show Taekwon is a martial arts fantasy stage show. Very dynamic and full of totally impossible stuff. Both of these shows are set up for visitors to easily get tickets. If you have any trouble, you can drop me a line in e-mail. A different type of suggestion is to take one of the night cruises on the Han River. It's pretty warm here right now and the humidity is making the city "a little uncomfortable." Getting out on the river is one of the few natural ways to cool off and as a bonus the city looks fantastic from the Han. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 12 Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2003 22:28:41 -0500 From: "David N. Johnson, RN mentioned in passing on this thread something about knuckle pushups belonging with straight leg situps as something bad for you. I've always found them useful in training proper fist and knuckle alignment, especially for the people that tend to bend the wrist slightly when starting out. (If you let them loose on the heavy bag that way, they get strained wrists.) I've never done lots of reps of just those, but mixing in a set of 10 along with sets using fingers, wide, regular, triangle, overhead, clapping, etc has never caused me any problems in 20 years.
