Knuckle push ups are only damaging when done in excess on hard surfaces. They are actually superior to regular push ups when it comes to the amount of stress placed on the wrist joint biomechanically. They work well as a teaching and conditioning tool before students begin bag work to strengthen the wrists and hands, improve alignment of the wrist when punching, and prepare the hands for impact. Done on the first two knuckles with the wrist lined up it is hard to find a better training tool for teaching proper alignment when punching. 2. Straight leg sit ups are only harm full when done with poor form by jerking up instead of rolling the body up off the ground starting with the head and curling up until you have your desired height depending if you are trying to work the abs or both the abs and the hip flexors. Sit ups are harmful only when done incorrectly. Done correctly they teach the anterior muscles of the torso work as a functional group together. 3. Dahn Juhn breathing and Sanchin are not exactly the same thing to begin with, but to the point at hand holding your breath will elevate you blood pressure, right along with a bad day at work, any type of exercise that is somewhat active, getting out of bed in the AM, and so on. Done to extremes any activity can cause damage, but occasionally increasing your blood pressure and / or holding your breath for breathing exercises shouldn't be to great of a load for the normal individual to handle, in fact it should improve his overall health and response to certain types of stress. He fact is that hold your breath at certain times isn't just good, it is mandatory to actually stabilize your torso by increasing the inter abdominal pressure to stabilize and protect the lower back, such as when heavy weights are lifted for a clean and press. If there is evidence that the above exercises and practices are dangerous when an individual is in good health and the exercises are done correctly I haven't seen it in the biomedical and sports science journals. What I have seen a number of studies try to infer that these things are true based on studies done with individuals in poor health, and studies showing that certain exercises such as any type of sit up is damaging when done incorrectly. Most exercises are just like medications, used properly and within the proper limits they are safe and beneficial, done incorrectly or in excess they can be dangerous and cause damage. I'm about to test for my brown belt, and i'v found nothing but reward from them. They help me concentrate, relieve stress, certain ones i've been shown are even a great way to naturally clear a stuff nose! ;) I would think if anything they would be improving my body; I missed the details of the article on sanchin breathing, could someone please clairify what was said to be a problem, and what exactly sanchin breathing is? Doing the Sanchin form with the breathing correctly will not make you die at > an early age. The key word is correctly....." Once again, the key is moderation. And Yes, a number of Okinawan traditions especially among the Shorei-ryu and Goju-ryu traditions have really messed up the whole approach. Since Miyagi died before actually finalizing his conceptual approach to Goju-ryu, Yamaguchi probably had the biggest impact on the JMA psyche' where Goju-ryu is concerned. The result is that all his dramatic huffing and puffing is what seemed to pass for Ibuki breathing. By contrast Kanai Uechi, the originator of Uechi-ryu, also practiced "Sanchin" breathing, and was an extraordinary technician. From what I can determine from George Mattsons' writing on Uechi-ryu, cardio-pulmonary problems had nothing to do with Sensei Uechi's death. In describing the breathing associated with the kata "Sanchin" Mattson states, "....inhale deeply and slowly, pushing the diaphram down. The only muscles used in breathing are the intercostal muscles of the chest. Breath slowly smelling the air." I find nothing that advocates the red-faced, quivering, total body contraction that might cause one to accidentally soil themselves. The blood is definitely not driven to the head and face and there is no raucous exhale to wake the neighbors. There is a moderate tension as the diaphram is worked and a comparable tension of antagonistic muscles throughout the body. Personally, I think what we are dealing with is the common American maxim of "more is better".(IE."If a little tension is good; a lot of tension is better.") Dan-jon breath has a respected place in traditional Hapkido training. So does the use of extended or exaggerated stances in training, the use of hyung, and the use of meditation. Rather than simply use only those bits of Hapkido that are comfotable or which we readily understand, my vote is that maybe we need to educate folks a bit more about the correct way to use this training. I can't see simply disposing of things because at first blush an item doesn't fit everybody 100% perfectly and all of the time. UNfortunately you are in the classic situation: If it hurts don't do it. Healing is usually about rest. Has your MD provided any clues? Two questions need to be addressed: Will your injury heal with time? And if not will training risk other injury? Good luck! It was posted by Sung Book Bae, the director of the KHF. Facing the establishment of the KHF world organization....! My name is Sung Book Bae, the director of the KHF. We, the KHF, are preparing the establishment of a world organization as a planned project in order to promote Hapkido more systematically, which is already introduced and practiced by many people all over the world. For last half century, Hapkido is introduced and developed proudly in the arena of world martial arts only by our senior masters without any support or help from the Korean government unlike Taekwondo. The share to succeed and develop Hapkido one dimension higher making it as the world best martial art is left before us now. The KHF admits that there were not enough supports for many masters working abroad, and because of special aspects of being abroad, the lacking of the KHF power caused lots of chaos and troubles. But, with this as a momentum, the KHF will do our best to support our masters working overseas, and try to stop all the acts and organizations using the name of the KHF without permission, as the KHF has never authorized any acts and organizations officially till now except Master Kwan-Young Lee as the representative of France and Master Beom Kim as that of the nothern England last year 2002. As one of these procedures, the KHF is gathering information about Hapkido people acting major countries or cities all over the world. And with these information, the KHF select people as regional representatives regardless their nationalities, sex and colors by this September. With them, the KHF will do everything positively for Hapkido development. The KHF has the plan to hold the establishment ceremony of the KHF world organization with the presence of all the regional representatives on the 6th of this December in Seoul, Korea. Thank you. * Any inquiry or requirement is welcome to Mr. Sung Book Bae, the director of the KHF.
