But I could still be wrong. > I don't mean to pry and I know you don't know me from Adam but I > was under the impression from reading some of your posts here that > your school was a member of KATU under GM Hwang. We are indeed part of KATU, we joined in 1993. I, too, have a tremendous amount of respect for GM Hwang; he has taught us incredible things. A lot of people have left KATU for Master Choi; I know that Mr. Karstadt in Phoenix did so, and that GM Hwang was very upset by this. Our group here in Colorado lost one instructor (Mr. Mike Wheeler) and his group of small schools; Mr. Wheeler is a federal officer, and his membership in an organization headed by a North Korean did not go over well with him or his superiors. My instructor, Mr. Roberto Roena, is a Denver County Sherriff; he has also received a lot of peer pressure about the situation. My position is uncertain; personally, I'm willing to take GM Hwang's word for Mr. Ung's integrity, and am willing to believe that being a part of KATU does not mean I'm supporting North Korea (a country that my country has some serious issues with). However, I've just taken a job that will require a DoD security clearance, and I'm not sure what impact Mr. Ung's leadership will have on this. I hate to say it, but it may be the case that our careers require us to change affiliations. > >Does that help? The whole thing is a mess, and is > very distressing.< > > I completely agree with you. I would much rather see any or all of > the ITF factions reunite. Master Choi really pissed off GMs Hwang and Rhee by the way he handled his election. I don't see much possibility of reconciliation there. The "Vienna ITF" is somewhere in the middle. Under McLelland, I don't think any reconcillitation was possible; but now that they're under new leadership, things are possible. Not having any communication from their camp, I have no idea which way they would lean. I'm sure that GM Seriff will never unite with any of the other groups. His loyalty was to General Choi, and now that the General is gone, I don't think he has any reason to join other organizations. It will be very interesting to see what happens to the USTF when he retires. > Who knows, maybe in a few years when the dust has settled. Let's > keep a good thought, at any rate. I agree. I think some upheaval in the wake of the General's death was inevitable, but it's very dissapointing that it's been this bad. For years, I've been quoting the General in my email sig: "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". It's bitterly ironic that the same could be now said of everyone in the ITF, and that the "ancestor" under criticism is the General himself. My personal, educated guess, about all this is that a lot of people were very unhappy with the General's leadership of the ITF; but they bitterly disagreed about what the proper solution was. Master Choi's solution was (I suspect) very acceptable to many western people, but completely unacceptable to those from eastern cultures. I suspect that reconciliation will have to wait until many of those involved with all of this have left power. :-( -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr Dave Steffen, Ph.D. Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede tkd-physics@comcast.net Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" To: Date: Thu, 17 Jul 2003 15:34:42 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] KHF - Politics - Reason for Training Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Alain: Sorry to hear about your troubles. This is sad. For those that know you, know that you are an intelligent, educated, very capable and talented hapkidoin. It is obvious that these people who attacked you and your wife verbally do not know you. But at the same time it is sad to see my other friends, such as Bruce and Ray being attacked by a self appointed leader of the KHF when they are not even affiliated with that organization, in any form or fashion! Hopefully the leadership of your organization will NOW put an end to this. I have NEVER seen something like this happen before, to this extent in ANY other organization. How it affected Bruce's life is the worse yet. Just let us know if there is anything we can do to help. Jere R. First, my name is John Arthur Johnson. Before I resigned from my college guidance counselor position at Daewon Foreign Language High School, I taught Composition and English Literature to an elite group of Korean students and helped them matriculate to Ivy League schools. In September I will begin teaching at Pusan National University as a visiting professor. I have studied Taekwondo for the last 16 years and began training in Hapkido when I moved to Seoul, South Korea in 1999. I hold a 3 dan in Taekwondo under Master Jack Hwang of Oklahoma City and I have tested up to 3 dan and achieved the title of Boo-sa-bun (assistant instructor) in Hapkido. I have taught Hapkido in Korea at my instructor's school for nearly 3 years. About two years ago I began teaching my high school students Hapkido in English at my instructor's school. To the best of my knowledge, I was the only person in Korea teaching Hapkido in English. I have done all this under the supervision of my instructor, Master Jo, Yong-sub and therefore with the permission of the Korea Hapkido Federation. Additionally, this year I went through the 11th annual Sa-bum (master) training seminar. A couple months before this I contacted the Korea Hapkido Federation through their Korean Web site and volunteered to help them in anyway I could. I was asked by Master Bae, Sung-book to join the KHF IT Team. I agreed and have volunteered my time since then. That’s right, I volunteer my time as a native speaker of English and as an international advisor for the KHF English Web site. Now, Mr. Huston, I have grown tired of your insults and threats. I have done everything possible to be helpful and to answer your concerns. When I did not know an answer, I told you how to obtain the information you needed. During this time I DID NOT INSULT, SLANDER, OR INSINUATE ANYTHING NEGATIVE AGAINST YOU OR MR. HACKWORTH. I have even asked you to explain how I was mistaken and I received nothing from you. Instead, in your person emails and over the Internet you have insulted me and threatened me with physical violence and legal proceedings. I have endeavored to ignore this and help you, but at every step you have increased your hostilities toward me. This behavior is contrary to the spirit of Hapkido and martial arts in general and completely unwarranted. Because of your chosen attitude toward me, I will no longer respond to anything you write to me personally or on the Internet, but I will keep records of it. Since we will both be in Seoul in early August, I invite you to sit down with myself, Master Lee, Whan-jae (Secretary General of the KHF), Master Bae, Sung-book (Director of the KHF), Master Choi, Suk-hwan, or whoever you want at their convenience. I will show them the insults, threats, lies and unprofessional attitude you have expressed in your emails and you can explain to them why you have conducted yourself in such a manner. Finally, Mr. Huston, you do not scare me. You do not intimate me. You are attempting to bully me, which I have not let happen since I was in middle school. Let me tell you something else about my personality, Mr. Huston: For nearly five years I have chosen to live within 35 miles of a nation that is currently ready to pound my adopted city with over ten thousand artillery shells an hour. I do this freely and I enjoyed being there. So, in other words, you are wasting your time and I suggest you give it up. Sincerely, John A. Veuleman" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Uniform Woes Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Digest, Hey guys, just dropping a line to see if anyone can suggest a new place to find the type of uniforms we wear. We have been sporting the KAMIKAZE line of heavy wt. karate gi, "tournament cut"/long lapels, bout 12 oz cotton, really good stuff. Anyway, Kamikaze has had more problems than you can shake a stick at. The guys at Kamikaze USA told me that a man in Canada bought the rights or trademark to the name KAMIKAZE KARATE-GI when the patent ran out with the men that started the company in germany. Supposedly he is making it so that he can legally be 'the only one' (highlander anyone?) There has also been alot of folks (Kamikaze USA included) telling me the guy in Canada is selling junk with the Kamikaze label sewn on, and he is not to be trusted. SOOOO my questions are: Has anyone delt with this guy in Canada? (www.kamikaze.com) and is he selling junk or good stuff? Do any of you use Kamikaze USA, and use their other product brands? (www.kamikazeusa.com) Does anyone have a supplier they recommend? I want to stay in the price range of 10-16 bucks for the give away student wt uniforms, 25-30 for the middle wt uniform, and around 90 for the heavy wt 12-14 oz stuff. Of course I want them all to have the longer lapels. The prices I am talking about are of course wholesale, and any company I go with I will need to set up an account with. If location is a factor, I am in North Louisiana. I have looked at Tokaido and Shuriedo, but they are a bit pricy ($150-200 range) Also, if any of you use them, the Manufacturer ANSHIN is also expected to be filing for bankruptcy. Sad day for two good uniform manufacturers. Sniffle sniffle. Yours in the Martial Arts, Charlie Veuleman ************** L.
