For those of you who actively practice using this technique, is there a way to practice forming it so that you can do it correctly on the fly? When I read Dakin's response I imagined that he formed the fist by extending the "social knuckle" and holding it in place with the thumb. It seems too awkward to form the fist with the index and ring fingers supporting the middle finger if you have to "just do it". ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 21:39:31 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_KHF_BBS?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray: ".....Amazing that any HKD person, even someone like chubby wannabe, would want to make the KHF look bad by posting the messages he does to the real KHF website......" Its not as though this guy has any real idea of what it is that he has done- -- or is doing. People will easily note that as many times as he has been called to account for his behaviors, the most he can do is call names and rave. He seems to have a pretty good idea of what constitutes a "coward". Apparently "cowards" are any people who challenge reality as he knows it, and then don't give him enough information to mount some sort of ambush through an employer. BTW: In keeping with what I said before about promoting folks who demonstrate sound practice and exhibit integrity in keeping with the KMA, can anyone speak with some authority on the following question? Are there policies in place that would prevent or forbid announcements or comments regarding non-KHF members in a KHF forum? There are some great and good people in the Hapkido arts but not all of them are KHF members. I wonder what the response would be if, say, I took Rudys' post where he talks about the policies and goals of the NKMAA and posted that to a KHF BBS. Must one be a KHF member to even post to such a BBS? The idea is self-defeating if it raises more problems than it addresses, so its worthwhile to ask beforehand. Anybody? Obviously the Kata/Hyung will help me decode some of the angle and direction info. Maybe you know of something like five element theory for dummies (or big ole north georgia boys)? Sounds like I missed a lot. In honor of the seminar, I had my transfer Shotkan 15yo blackbelt break his first cinder block with "soft palm." Tonight since Rodney was late, I let him help me remember some of the palm strike one steps SJN taught in Jackson :-) Anyway, I am sad to say I can still not do one brick every time on the first try (still using force when I'm nervous) and can only get two bricks about 30-50% of the time....guess I'll "eat more rice..." Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: I do not know you, but it is good to know that there are others out there who understand where we are coming from. I will try to make it to a seminar someday, I am sure it will be as you say it is. There are similar situations in every organization it seems. I am reminded of the words of a friend of mine many years ago when I was contemplating studying the martial arts,"anyone can learn to destoy or kill, it takes a truly wise man to learn to heal." This can be construed many different ways and each way has arisen over the years, causing me to contemplate my actions, seeking the direction in which I should go. Many times, for lack of proper direction, I have found myself like the lone viking on the bridge faced with a thousand enemies, hoping in his "heart of hearts" that each would be stronger than the next, yet feeling the weight of the masses before him. Anyway, I guess direction is a hard thing to find, so lately I have been looking in the underlying philosophical tenets of my Art, and have discovered that in each instance of offense, some vital aspect of our "code" has been violated. Rather than enter into heated strife, I have found that I can point out these violations and cause no end of discomfiture among the "misguided", and also much laughter among the "enlightened". You are quite correct in that if it were not for the efforts of a very few good people like the gentlemen you mentioned, our respective arts would not be studied in a Dojang, but would only be relegated to a history text, buried forever by the egos of a greedy few. I guess what I am saying perhaps is that we are going through some tumultous times, and rather than be blown about by the winds of fortune, let us set our courses in the proper direction, one that preserves our arts as we were taught. I suppose, like you say, the "OTHERS" will always be out there trying to corner the market for the sake of a buck or a salve of the ego. Who knows, if we can teach enough people, maybe someday the "OTHERS" will be ignored and fade away. I have not yet discovered a way to wage war on these problems that is not universally destructive. If you know of a way, please don't walk, RUN to your keyboard so I will know also. I wish you all the best. I have also seen a strike which looks like a bad fist doubled-up with the knuckle of the thumb protruding out the side. I have been told that the strike is executed something like a "ridgehand strike" (ie. with a lateral motion). However, I have tried a few into a striking pad and don't think I would care to wager which surface would give first --- my thumb or the intended target---- in an application. FWIW. >> Our system head, Dr. David Jordan, is known to punch with his thumb knuckle locked on the side of his fist instead of the bottom. I heard a few reasons why he does this, one because he says it makes the muscles tighter for him. You guys try it while you read this, you will notice some more tendons and muscles pop out. Don't know if thats good or bad though. second, I have also heard since he is old (er) it hurts his hands because of athritis, so he has adjusted his punch. Maybe it is a combination of both, nobody has asked him that I know of. I once tried the 'adjusted' ridgehand you speak of. Didn't like it either. I much more prefer the fingers extended-thumb hidden version, where you strike with the....well, ridge of the hand....hence, ridgehand I suppose. YITMA Charlie Veuleman ************** L. The idea is self-defeating if it raises more problems than it addresses, so its worthwhile to ask beforehand" in your last posting. The answer is simple: Anyone, whether KHF, Taekwondo, Karate, Tai Chi Chuan, etc, can post because the forum is intended to be an exchange of ideas for all. One goal of the KHF Web site is to give everyone a forum to post their ideas, views, and questions about the art. I am fully aware of the dangers of such a bulletin board and am going to implement some things to help. I just hope they are enough. However, with any open forum like this, problems will arise and the KHF will hopefully have saveguards in place to deal with them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I had a good night sleep before I checked my emails, and I apologize for the delay in replying to the many cudos you were so kind to send my way. Much of the hard work was done by my loyal students Masters Keatley and Janisse as well as our wonderful hosts Masters Stigall and Gavin in Chicago and JKN Kat Kelly in Houston. The credit for a successful seminar weekend should go to them. I also wish to thank Masters McHenry, Thomas, and Wicker for their major contributions to the Houston seminar. Their desire to help make the event better truly shows just how well Master West's USKMAF, NKMAA, and other open-minded martial artists can work together. In Chicago, it was not only Korean martial artists, but several non Korean martial arts groups happily worked together with true Jung Shin spirit. Sorry if I can't mention all of the Masters and Black Belts that attended that event. There were just too many to remember you all, and I would not want to leave a single one out. I can't believe the effort you and the students put into the training despite the oppressive heat. Wonderful! Like Bruce said, if the focus is on martial art training, there is no time for politics. In that scenario all benefit, and I noticed that most of the folks I spoke to at both seminars can't wait to get to Jackson next March. BTW, if anyone thinks that Bruce just likes to write letters, I have news for you. He truly enjoys to get on the mat and sweat as well:) What's more, he even asked me on several occasions to show him the details of some particular techniques. Most folks who I show the details of a technique, never ask me to show them another. I have to find out why that is:) I wish to also thank all participants of both seminars for their support. Young and old and novice to Master level, your enthusiasm and Jung Shin spirit made this weekend a very memorable occasion for me, and I truly appreciate that. In closing, I wish Master Hodder a speedy recovery. Your body might not have been there, but we definitely know you were there in spirit. Your students represented you well. Sincerely, Rudy W.
