Kim urged to resign A special parliamentary committee looking into Korea's failed bid for the 2010 Winter Olympics yesterday adopted a resolution urging Rep. Kim Un-yong to resign from all the public posts he holds for allegedly lobbying against Pyeongchang. With 13 of the 20 panel members attending in a vote, eight voted for the proposal while only two went against it. Another three abstained from voting. It is the first time that a parliamentary committee approved a demand for the resignation of a lawmaker. The main opposition Grand National Party, which controls the special committee, submitted the resolution July 15, insisting that Rep. Kim should be dismissed from all of his public posts. GNP lawmakers in the committee argued that Kim discouraged Pyeongchang in its bid to host the Olympics in exchange for his personal ambition to become the IOC vice president. Pyeongchang lost to Vancouver, Canada, by two votes in the final round of balloting at an IOC meeting early this month, and Kim was later elected IOC vice president. But the ruling Millennium Democratic Party - which Kim belongs to - opposed the resolution, blaming the opposition party of "witch-hunting" and bringing down a respectable figure without proof that he had actually campaigned against Pyeongchang. The special committee also decided to bring Kim's case to the National Assembly's ethics committee, should he not accept the call for resignation by the end of this month. The balloting involved nine GNP members, three MDP members and one from the minor United Liberal Democrats. Kim currently holds more than 10 head titles of both international and domestic organizations, including the General Association of International Sports Federations, the Korean Olympic Committee and the World Taekwondo Federation. The demand for an individual lawmaker to resign is not legally binding, but it is considered a blow to the IOC member. Phoenix fist is the pointing finger knuckle and the Ox-horn fist is the one with thumb knuckle sticking out. There are also Leopard fist, Crane-beak, Crane-wing, Snake and other assortment of animal fists. Regards, S. H. I am taking this opportunity to ask if folks from each of the previous seminars including Toledo, Houston (and I think I am overlooking one) would identify someone who could work with me in a write-up for TKDT. I am not sure about the cut-off for publishing but if each event could have a couple of paragraphs and a couple of pictures I think we could put together a really nice presentation. People need to see what dedication looks like when its is converted into action, yes? Kat? Kevin? Dennis? You all have my address--- after all it IS posted right above. Please let me hear from you ASAP. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I often think of an anonymously authored verse when I encounter struggles between groups of people or divisiveness within a group. The recent threads about KMA politics and organizations made me think of it again. Here it is: WHICH ARE YOU? I watched them tearing a building down, A gang of men in a busy town; With a ho-heave-ho and a lusty yell They swung a beam and the sidewalk fell. I asked the foreman: "Are these men skilled, And the men you'd hire if you had to build?" He gave a laugh and said: "No indeed! Just common labor is all I need. I can easily wreck in a day or two What builders have taken a year to do!" And I thought to myself as I went my way, Which of these roles have I tried to play? Am I a builder who works with care, Measuring life by the rule and square? Am I shaping my deeds to a well-made plan, Patiently doing the best I can? Or am I a wrecker, who walks the town, Content with the labor of tearing down. Isn't that called ox jaw, or something similar? That always seemed like a good alternative to the back fist to me, especially if the head was considered a target. I've seen that movement in various Chinese and Okinawan systems, but didn't know if it was incorporated into any Korean styles. Thoughts? Opinions? <> Ox Jaw is one of my favorite breaking techniques, and also a good limb destruction parry against a linear punch, coming up from underneath. I believe it is demonstrated in GMst Lee, Kang Uk's Tang Soo Do book, and possibly in GMst Shin, Jae Chul's I can't remember if Nakayama and/or Funakoshi show it also :-) Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It is a nice thought, but I fear the result would be another peeing contest Korean martial arts can do without....." Though I mentioned you only by way of example, thanks for the guidance. It goes without saying that I defer to your wishes. Please excuse my zeal. My hope is that we can advocate for folks who have taken responsibility for mentoring and leading their respective arts. I identify you as such a person who has taken up this work for what I would identify as the more Chinese-influenced side of the Hapkido arts. I identify JR as a person who has done the same for the more Japanese-influenced side of the Hapkido arts. Not having much experience with TKD/TSD I can't speak intelligently regarding their leadership, but I am sure there are folks who can likewise be identified and I think need to be recognized. I have noticed that often times people with Korean surnames, or even nationals of countries other than Korea with Oriental features seem to automatically get a deference out of proportion to what they contribute back in to the art. It takes a lot of time, patience and charity for folks to give freely of themselves simply to see others grow in their selected art, and I don't think this is specific to any one ethnic group. We have some pretty great personalities right here in our own "communities" but it seems that the bozo-s are always the ones garnering the greater amount of the spot-light. I could spend the rest of my life telling everyone about the bozo-s, warning people and confronting the violations of these people. Maybe my energy is better spent simply recognizing people who give so much their just due. FWIW. We use this in KSW sometimes as a strike but also as a cover to a punch and then a strike. This method is extremely effective as you are already within striking distance (from the cover) and the opponent is "open". However, it must be executed very quickly. michael whalen KSWnut --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com Copyright 1994-2003: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
