Not sure what exactly you mean? Can I assist with getting the article published in TKDT??? Not sure how... Ray Terry Apologies, my original posting was not very clear, I was wondering if you could provide a mechanism for articles such as the one proposed by Bruce to be made available electronically to the Dojang_Digest members. I am sure there must be plenty of other members of the DD who would like to publish / read articles about KMA? My sister and I are first degrees (Taekwondo =D), and we are in need of a school. If anyone knows of a suitable school in the area, I'd really appreciate your reply. Thanks and best wishes, C.M. --------------------------------- This is kinda my area I suppose. Depending on what you practice, S'Port and Bossier can be a wealth of martial arts training. Some good, mostly bad, but lots to see and do regardless. You say you practice Tae Kwon Do. There are Tae Kwon Do Schools in that area teaching the Chon Ji pattern set style, the WTF pattern set style, and my guys teaching the Pyong An set style. I can't (and won't) vouch for the other schools, but my guys will allow you to wear your rank. They fight.. I mean spar... A bunch, so if you are into that, I can give you a number. Very good people, and they have an even assortment of youth and adults. Also smaller class size, so the teaching (two instructors at all times) is more personal. And finally, our headquarters school is only 45 minutes away, and training with Doc Jordan and Buster Cotton and John Pat Bullock is always a blast. When everyone piles up and heads over to Ruston it is a great time and learning expeirience. Also, I am only an hour away from Shreveport, and I would hope I have something worthwhile to teach : )Hope you can join us. Also the USKA is alot of fun to compete in. Not a requirement, but fun. Hello Bruce: I completely understand your zeal to do good for the Korean arts... we all should. However, given the circumstances of today, I feel good intent might just be blown away by bad blood. In that case, your quest to do good will have an opposite effect, and that would be a waste of your valuable time. Regarding magazine coverage. In past dealing with mag editors, there are a few simple rules they like to stick with. #1 is to have timely news, and therefore the Ohio seminar which happened a month ago would not be a good inclusion. In fact, it may nix the opportunity to have other things published. #2 is to have clear pictures that are sent in a format that minimizes additional work the mag editors have to do. A CD rom with pics (and the article) in a format the mags use is helpful. Mags and printing facilities often use Mac computers. #3 is to keep the article to a suitable size when compared to its importance. Don't send a long winded article on a seminar that attracted a dozen people. Long articles should be reserved for feature items, and it is best to contact the mag editor directly to see how they deal with such articles. #4 keep the dialogue simple and to the point. When writing for a martial arts magazine, you are NOT writing for a professional journal:) Often, the magazine itself has a "contributors" section where the acceptable formats are laid out. If not, the editor will be glad to send you a copy. Last, it is helpful to mention how much interest your article will generate among your own circle of influence. In other words, think of the magazines bottom line. Hope this helps. Sincerely, Rudy --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" To: Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2003 15:45:56 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] thumbs, fingers, etc... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net About once a year, I break with a thumb during public demonstrations. I make sure that my thumb it is straight and at a complete right angle to my hand and that my arm is properly aligned. Then I make sure my arm is properly aligned and that I strike perfectly perpendicular to the board. We use 1x12 #2 pine boards cut into 10" lengths straight from home depot. I only do this on rare occasions. I also perform a break using my fingers in a straight line, being careful not to bend any or misalign my arm. Once again, I only do this on rare occasions during demonstrations. Why occasionally? It would be very easy for me to break something. I do not advocate using one knuckle or digit while striking. After all, if the object you are hitting is harder than you are, you will loose. So why do I do it? It is nice for a demo. Have I, or will I ever use a finger or knuckle outside of the dojang? Not a chance. I prefer a nice ki strike to even a full two-knuckle fist strike. BTW, I successfully went through 3 concrete blocks with a ki strike (8x16x2) without spacers at the demo a few weeks ago. A new personal best. Several weeks ago, during a demo (same one I just mentioned), one of my students broke his hand because he hit two boards with his second knuckle instead of his first two knuckles. He is on the swim team at the University of Cincinnati and in great shape. It was a clean break (his hand, not the boards). He had two pins put in it. It was something he had done before, but he was not 100% focused and the boards won. Be careful when considering the use and practice of striking with your knuckle or fingers. The chances are good that you will loose if the object you are striking is harder than the object hitting it. Jere R. Hilland www.hapkidoselfdefense.com PS.
