This defination seems to be elusive..." For me, politics refers to activities accomplished through the system intended to serve the art rather than through the art itself and then expressed through the system. In this way it might be said that the "art" of serving the people of a nation is often expected to be facilitated by that nations' government. Often times, however, relationships and conflicts within the government take on a life of their own such that the service to the nation can be severely impaired. In the KMA one can reasonably expect that advancement to positions of leadership and responsibility will be a function of ones' skill, competence, & character within the context of their chosen art. Certainly interpersonal conflicts and relationships play a part. However, when advancement and placement become a function primarily of how one manipulates or represents relationships, image, information and material then I believe we are no longer discussing KMA but rather politics -- "the art of Schmoozing". If anyone is having a difficult following my logic one need only compare and contrast the manner in which individuals in the KMA earn rank through training, time on the mat, and time in grade as compared to having an administrative or honorary rank bestowed, or a title assumed through affiliation. I hope this is of some help. Thank you for indulging me. The great thing about this event is that expenses are paid for by the Organizing Committee. The only expense that each athlete must bear is the airfare. This event offers an excellent opportunity for women competitors to test their skills against the best women competitors in the world. We are attempting to get back on schedule and thus the deadline for submission of items for the fall issue will be August 15th, 2003. Articles and photographs may be emailed to the magazine editor at ladytkd@aol.com. If you do not have email, you may mail these items to the USTU office at One Olympic Plaza Ste 105C, Colorado Springs, CO 80909. Submissions will be returned only if accompanied by a stamped self-addressed envelope. Any mailed article needs to be on a disk or a cd rom, preferrably in Word format. You may send original photos for us to scan. Again, these will be returned only if accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope. Please note your name on the back of the photo. Guidelines: Photos - action photos or photos of USTU members in action. "Future Olympians" is always a popular piece. Articles - items of general interest to the membership at large. We cannot print individual profiles on instructors or students due to our large membership. We will print a profile of a school written in such a way as to highlight why this school is a shining example of Taekwondo spirit or if this school contributes to its community in a unique manner. The first ones to be submitted that meet our criterion will be used in that order. Please make these articles no more than 2 pages, including photos. All submissions are read and checked for suitability for print in our magazine. Some items which are suitable for other publications do not meet the needs of our membership. Again, stories of how Taekwondo has improved or changed one's life are good. We also would like articles on special activities by your state association or school. Thank you for your time and cooperation. Taekwondo Today is YOUR Magazine -your submissions help keep it that way. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<>> Jye: please explain how one conditions a knuckle consisting of a bone layered by skin. Yes, one can condition the skin, but that would serve little purpose as the breaking is done with the bone of the knuckle not the skin on the surface of the bone. Conditioning the surface (or skin) would not serve much purpose against an object harder than the bone behind it. In my early days as a student (early 70's), my teacher would break his knuckles by hitting concrete and then continue breaking them until they were deformed. In college as a 3rd dan, my second teacher (also a Korean national), wanted me to pursue that training (conditioning as he called it) as I was older. Fortunately, my education is in Architecture and my hands needed to be free of deformities and I was able to decline participation. We now know that this kind of training is counter productive and leads to serious problems later in life. I am fortunate to not have gone through this type of conditioning. Many of my friends were not so lucky and are having hand problems to this day. Jere R. The content of the seminar will be different from those normally taught by dojunim and will be limited to Sin Moo 4th Dan's and above only. This seminar will be held on March 26,27,&28 of 2004 and is limited to those instructors who actually teach Sin Moo Hapkido. This means that you should know and practice the basic 25 kicks, the basic 8, and most of the other thousands of techniques he teaches. The seminar will feature techniques he normally does not cover in basic classes and will also focus on new things he has added. We will be working on a standard curriculum that we can all work with alone or with another system you may already teach. Also, we will be working with what the future holds for Sin Moo and Hapkido in general.
