Was this exchange performed free-style or was it a pure demonstration? Were the strike and its effects real or simulated? If it was real, what effects were experienced by the poor gent who volunteered to be the victim? I watched the clip a few times and it looks like GM West has every confidence that the 'attacker' is going to go down for the count. If this was scripted for the purposes of demonstration then that certainty is easily understandable. If it was performed for real, what signs were visible to GM West that the strike was effective before the attacker' keeled over? Please forgive my rush of questions but striking is a new interest for me, although I expect it is all old hat to most subscribers of the list. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "George Peters" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 06 Aug 2003 04:26:10 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Yarchak,Mary Kay on sohn mok dong...... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Maam: I suppose that it MIGHT be a down side in our federation in not having colorful names for the techniques. I heard a really good one a while back at a school I visited, anero pahkeso mahkee(forgive my spelling), or inside-outside block was called " ice cream scoopers". Wow, to a portly martial artist like myself that was quite an attention getter. Ah well, I can't see anyone from our org going to that anytime soon. Have a good one! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Wendy, I like the suggestions others have given you, however there are alternative methods of research on the subject you ask about. Why not go to a couple of local Korean martial arts schools and interview the instructors about their interpretations of what the concept of "Moo Do" entails. There is a Master Park in Youngstown Ohio whose students use these words as a greeting to each other and to other martial artists. It has been a few years since I have worked with any of his students, but perhaps you could reach the Master or a student and inquire about their usage of the term. Best of luck in your endeavor! It may keep the mud slinging down a bit. <> Dear Ray, Large project are only efficient with systems. We successfully have a huge group with few rules. If the list will allow it, let me offer a personal opinion on references. Often we see instructors looking for a (fill in the blank) style school for their student who is moving. I think the only reply ON LIST should be Master so-and-so teaches XYZ martial art in anytown USA and his email, website and phone number are….. Any additional information should be given OFF LIST and the prospect, referral, and possibly referred instructor can start a private thread about the transfer of said student. I do think glowing (or negative) testimonials about events are appropriate after you attended the event. The other scenario I see is John Doe will be traveling to BF Egypt next week can anyone suggest a (fill in the blank) dojang for him to train at. Again I think the above applies. Let’s tell John Doe how to find a couple of schools in that Metro area and let the comments and testimonials (good or bad) go OFF LIST. “My $0.10 worth, my $0.02 is free” – Eminem Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi all, >From lurk-mode I know many of you have knowledge of ki/chi and healing, so I'm hoping you can help me out. Back in January I sprained my right knee due to hyperextension during a roundhouse kick to a heavy bag. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a very competent practitioner of traditional chinese medicine and with two visits and about six weeks recupe, my knee was pretty much back to normal. The problem, now there's a pain inside my hip directly on the spot of the little bubble you feel just below the skin (I think this is called a meridian point?). The pain is dull and bearable, but it's constantly there. I've been waiting for it to go away, but surprise, it doesn't. Small note here... I did this to myself... I was shown how to do the healing massage from hip to knee, but I must have done something wrong. Feels like I partially opened a flood-gate and it's not too pleasant. The bigger problem is, my healer moved out of the U.S. before I had a chance to go back to correct the pain. I'm in the NYC area if anyone can recommend a good healer. Or, if anyone has any advice I can do on my own, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time. They are in the archives of the list, i.e. see ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com and the proceed to the appropriate directory (digests). However, some ddj recipes employ known dangerous components. It may keep the mud slinging down a bit......" This really IS a big problem. In the KMA how does one critically evaluate folks in the community? For instance, I just noted that Jeff commented on MY comment which included Garrison, and Mike commented on my comment regarding Pelligrini. Some time back I commented candidly on the Hapkido- Info Net in response to material that Hackworth put out and Ed Annibel shut that down. I also had a chance to comment on some Hackworth stuff on BUDO- SEEK and had THAT deleted. The general position seems to be that nobody wants "negativity" on their Net. On the surface thats laudable, but exactly where does the "self-policing" aspect of KMA come in. You will remember the idea that KMA do not need action by government because we are able to police our own industry, yes? OK. Just how is that suppose to work? Now the reason that I bring this up at this time is that in the last couple of years the issue of selecting a decent MA school and teacher has come up and someone, somewhere, always makes a statement about asking the teacher to identifiy their qualifications. Does this strike me as just "boilerplate" advice, when you consider that when people with a number of years in KMA ask about such things even THEY can't get a straight answer? The original post to which I responded in the last DD had to do with someone asking for an opinion of Benko as an instructor. I still say that is a loaded question and I agree with you, Ray, that maybe such a critique needs to be done through PM. But I am still left with this uncomfortable feeling that there can easily be a growing number of travesties snowballing in the wings because of increasing apathy in the face of bald-faced abuse. FWIW. There should be no confusion. e.g. I mentioned that certain comments have been made here based on thorough and rather extensive research (H). We also have people on this list that have personal experience with others, e.g. being on the testing board for one that now claims to be a Grandmaster (P). Negative opinion is one thing. Facts are another.
