I guess what we've found is that there is no agreed upon right or wrong, with respect to the Korean flag. My "insight" comes directly out of printed material provided by our Grandmaster on how the flags should hang, as well as the respective meanings of each flag. At least within our organization, we should follow the guidelines! Dennis McHenry wrote: >One other detail, on the Korean flag the Um/Yang rotates counterclockwise. This would place red on the left! Ray noted that his sources say it is NEVER displayed portrait! However, if you think of the flag on a flag pole, with no wind blowing, the red would naturally fall to the right! Charlie Veuleman wanted to know if we added a State flag to the line up: >How would the line up be if they were all four hung on the same wall? Since we hang US - Organization - Korean (the organization flag in the middle), I would suggest State - US - Organization - Korean I am going out on a limb with this one, but I assume (I know....) that when people say "Korean Martial Arts" they naturally associate this with South Korea, and the flag we use. Historically, is there any significant contribution of North Korea in the development/growth of "Korean Martial Arts"?????? Just curious. The features of this point are that it is a window of the sky point (meaning that it is applicable in psycho-emotional disorders). It is also a "sea of Qi" point along with CV-17 and UB-10 (meaning that it is critical in the overall regulation of Qi and Blood). >From the Westrn Medicine point of view, this point is continuous with the carotid sinus which comes off of the aortic arch. This sinus is heavily populated with baro (pressure) receptors which monitors and modulates blood pressure (BP). There is a bifurcation at the sinus. One branch plunges deep into the brain and other is superficial. Striking this point fools the brain into thinking that BP has risen to dangerous levels. Loss of consciousness is a reflex and reset. If someone has aterial plaque striking this point can be fatal. Striking this point can also cause swelling and occlusion which can also be fatal. Physicians, in rare circumstances, would tweak this point to lower danerously high BP. There is much more to this point, but I think I have said enough. Martial arts practitioners has long recognized the effectiveness of striking this point. This is why so many techniques are directed here. Finally, all I can say, is proceed with caution. Ian A. Hui-Son Choe, author of several hapkido books recently, pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter in 2001 and was sentenced to 9 years....." I hadn't seen the story but you post completely blind-sided me. I get the same feeling when I hear about child-molesters, frauds and all the other bits that make up the dark side to what we practice. So much for all the high-toned talk about how KMA developes Character and helps people to become better persons. I wonder if Mr. Choe dutifully recited the O-Gae before killing the man. What a joke. :-( Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2003 07:53:37 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_New_Organization_?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I recently received a notice that the Korea Hapkido Federation will be organizing an international counterpart. This is not any big news for folks who have been keeping up on such things. However, I was struck to note that it will be called the "World Hapkido Federation". Since an organization by that name already exists under GM Myung, I am wondering if anyone else has heard this same report and has any additional information. Now I'm hoping that you might be able to assist me. I am a professional finishing up my Masters Degree in computer science. As a final project, I would like to "build" the ultimate martial arts dojang management system. For this project I will only be writing the specifications for the project, not actually programming it. I may decide to do the programming later if I love the results. This should include all student management functions, but no point of sale functionality (in other words, I don't want to build a cash register system for merchandise). I would love it if you could send me your individual wish lists of: - what you feel is essential to a good student management system - what you would like to see, but rarely, if ever, have seen, in such a system Tell me what you'd like to see in reports, on screens, etc. Get as detailed as you like; I will value all input. If requested, I will share the final document with any who request it (sometime around the end of December), with the Understanding that no one else will build the identical system, as I may eventually build and attempt to market it (discounted to DD members ). I don't know if it would be of interest to other members of the list to see all this stuff, though it might start discussions going. I will ask that whether or not you post to the list, please email me at my personal email address, which is shereeg@frontiernet.net . Oh, in case you're wondering what my martial arts qualifications are, I studied Isshinryu Karate for six years (three years pre-kids, Three years about 12 years later) stopping for personal reasons at 1st gup, ending in 1997. I am currently studying Tae Kwon Do (which I love), am a black belt candidate, and hope to test for my 1st dan in February. My rub is those instructors and masters who are teaching solely sport, but duping students into believing they are learning how to fight. Just as I would an American concerning the US flag. Most folks don't know unless they were in the boy scouts or the military. Also, happy birthday to Master Timmerman. I think it is a requirement for hapkidoin to have birthdays in August. If I remember, his is today (8/12), Master West's is 8/1 and my 44th birthday is this Saturday. I turned 18 in 1977 when Elvis died, at least that is how my family remembers my birthday. Now after 14 years of marriage, if I could just get my father in law to spell my name correctly! Kim question answered Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Mr. Terry, GM Chong S. Kim does not claim GM Han Jae Ji as one of his teachers, and says that it would be inaccurate to describe him as a student of Ji's. That being said, GM Kim knew GM Ji before GM Kim began studying with GM Yong Sul Choi. GM Kim and GM Ji share a lot of history together, but they took separate paths over 30 years ago. Even so, GM Kim recognizes GM Ji's senior status in Hapkido and his right and authority to issue certificates. I see that you will be out of town on September 13, but I will invite you as my guest to this (should your plans change) or the next Jang Mu Won seminar. Or, if your in our area stop on by, I will take you to lunch with GM Kim, and we can explore more of the exciting past of Hapkido :) >Did Gm Kim study with Gm Choi before or after he was a student under Gm Ji?
