International Challenger Cup - GERMANY (TaekwondoAY@aol.com) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Sat, 16 Aug 2003 07:14:01 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Recommendation_?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Bryon: "......MOST IMPORTANTLY, is it useful for someone who is just beginning HKD?....." Actually, I will go out on a limb and say that for you making it to an experience is of particular importance, but most people here would certainly jump to the conclusions that "of course Sims would say that". So let me give you three very good reasons why I would encourage a beginner to attend if at all possible. 1.) Networking. If you are just starting off in Hapkido I believe it is very necessary to connect with a larger community than just your local one. Some teachers discourage this for various reasons. However, for the healthy growth of your own Hapkido career I heartily encourage you connecting with a network of other practitioners. It will keep you in tune with other events and provide opportunities to make friends, true enough, but it will also keep your fingers on the pulse of what is happening in the Hapkido community. 2.) Education. Undoubtedly you have your teacher and what I am about to say is not meant to disparage his teaching skills. However, there is much to be said for hearing even the same material presented by another teacher using HIS particular way of presentation. As JR says quite often when opening a seminar, "just for today, try doing it my way." Even if you have a different way of doing a technique, executing that technique a bit differently often gives you additional insight into your own method. 3.) Attitude. As we all know training something when its is just starting is a helluva lot easier than after its half-grown. We talk a lot about what happens in the KMA when a bad approach or thought-process gets into someones' practice. Anger, bitterness, arrogance and mean-spiritedness are not unknown in our studies. I believe that it is incredibly important to spend time submerged in an activity where one can actually see what it is like to practice their art in an atmosphere of acceptance and tolerance. You will always be able to find activities where the attitude is one of elitism and exclusion but working in an atmosphere of acceptance is pretty hard to find. Now is the time to develop a taste for tolerance and acceptance in your practice. So there you are. Three sound reasons for beginners making it to Jackson. And I will go one step farther and say that there are folks closer to you than me that can probably make recommendations for the best way to get there. Anthony New and Jere Hilland both lurk around here and I am sure they would be willing to give you advice. If nothing else, contact me--- or better yet--- contact JR --- he is one of the most accessible people I know- -- and he will undoubtedly help you out. 26 days and a wake-up!! Hope to see you there. If so what is it? Is it for solo or partner...do share! Jye __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! It seems as second guessing your grandmaster's knowledge and integrity. Is it maybe that you donot trust his judgement or feel he is a belt mill? It has a disrespectful feeel to it. But it's only my two cents. I was up helping out with the ROTC program. Well anyway i myself find it hard to believe that anyone has more than two GM titles. This thing that I hold a 9th dan in this and a 12th dan in that and a 27th dan in some other thing very hard to swallow. I personally think tha as a human being we cal only learn but so much before our brains begin to fry. I personally only practice Tae Kwon Do WTF and ITF. I hold Black Belts in both but dont claim to be some Grand Popah or anything like that. My feelings are just personal in nature but as we all know there are some folks out there that are very lets just say noy so truthful we just need to be aware of thease people. We should be nice and honorable you know what you know and if someone claims to be a 20,000 dan in Tae kwon Ju Jit Jeet koon do then so be it. Again thank you for your e-mails and I'll see you on the digest. Mr. Manuel Maldonado _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. Dr. Tsao was with her parents and should be returning to Jackson in several days time. Everyone that's ever been to one of our seminars here would know Dr. Tsao from her willingness to go from HApKiDo mode to Orthopedist mode on a moments notice, giving freely of her time, energy and experience to anyone who asked. My heart goes out to her and her family....J. R.
