I would like to provide my personal perspective. I have practiced Tae Kwon Do as well as Hapkido for a number of years now. I am considered to have low sight, deteriorating (legally blind in one eye and deteriorating in the other). With your mothers situation you need to consider a few points. What sort of person is she? Living with someone with low or no vision you would understand the stress and frustration felt with things you cannot do and things you are told by others you cannot or should not do. Would your mother enjoy the activeness of a TKD class with the sparring and patterns or would she like the gentle exercise of Yoga or Tai Chi? Think firstly about what she would like. I can tell you that I enjoy the hands-on practice of Hapkido, but that suits my personality. As someone mentioned earlier the exercise would generally be of benefit to your mother's arthritis. I would have to argue thought that your mother's lack of eye sight will be more a benefit than a disadvantage when it comes to training as she will use her other senses to a larger extent and develop them further and this will benefit her in general life immeasurably As stated earlier, the Instructor is very important but so is your mother's choice. My computer is nuts these days :) I was wondering if there were any DDer's who made it to see Master Booth at the NKMAA Headquarters for his seminar. As much as I wanted to be there it was not possible this time. I know how great Master Booth's mini seminar's are when I see him in Jackson and can only imagine how great it was to have him one on one for the day (weekend?)in the Sault. If any DD people were there and could fill us in I would love it. I will definately try to make the next one for sure. Thought I was passing gas. Nope, it was the knee giving in. Well, the prognosis is that your knee may have to be in traction for a while. Fun stuff. Have some Physical Therapy. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ed, First, definately go see an orthropedic surgeon and get an MRI done. I second Eric's advice, I tore my ACL and both meniscus in my left knee in 2000. I also went with the autograft. Though it is a longer recovery and rehab is harder it's a lot better than a cadaver graft. After therapy and about a year and a half of downtime I returned to full activity. You do have to take it easy and definately stretch out before class. Trust me on the stretching out portion. Two weeks ago I tore my meniscus in my right knee and will be going in for arthoscopic surgery next week. I figure with about 6 months of recuperation I will be back to working out. Hope all works out for you, Eddie 3rd Dan - WTF TKD Confidential, unpublished property of ProxyMed, Inc. (c) copyright as of the date of this email. ProxyMed, Inc. My visit with the orthopedic doctor confirmed that I blew out my ACL and I am proceeding with the surgury for reconstruction on Sep 2 2003. The doctor has been doing buisness for 22 years and takes care of the local semi-pro hockey team Grizzlies here in Utah, and im confident of his ability and the proccedure that he will perform. during freesparring I tried to perform a knifehand arm block, neck strike and when stepping in with my right leg I rolled my foot on the mat this caused my leg to keep going to the left....pretty stupid on my part as I should have stayed in the pattern I was performing and not try to step past it, but oh well live and learn. right now im out of work for 2 weeks and my employer has agreed to give me a bench job untill I am able to resume my normal duties as an Industrial Mechanic which im gratefull for, and will resume training in 5-6 months....looks like my weight bench and bycicle will be getting alot of attention over the next 6 months...LOL thank you all so much, Ed --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 13:38:26 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Without_Starting_WW_III,_please......?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Folks: I just picked up a copy of TKDT (Sept 2003, pg 22) and have noted that a school in Cleveland, Alabama had a promotion ceremony for SHINSEI Hapkido (sic). "Joseph Lumpkin, 9th Dan and head of Shinsei Kwan of Hapkido presented Dr. Darryl R Covington and Craig Hamm with certificates from the Korea Hapkido Federation recognizing their promotion to 7th dan." The article goes on to say that "Shinsei Hapkido is a recognized kwan of the Korea Hapkido Federation and the National Hapkido Assn." Perhaps in light of all the turmoil in the last year my questions may be obvious but I'll ask them anyhow. a.) Does the Korea Hapkido Federation--- I'm talking about the Board in Korea now---- know that they recognize Shinsei Kwan? b.) Does the Korea Hapkido Federation--- I'm talking about the Board in Korea now---- know that they have a 9th degree Black belt who runs this kwan and that they now have recognized a couple of new 7th Dans in Hapkido? c.) Do we still have "Dueling KHF-s" and if so, how are we coming on getting the English version of the more authentic website to list authentic ranks and standing? They rush you through each event or site so you can bask in the fact you were there or had your picture taken somewhere special, rather than enjoying the experience itself..." Thanks for the information. It is as I feared. Apparently the only way I am going to do what it is that I want to do is either find like-minded folks who want to go to a particular group and spend time with them. Or, make arrangements to go by myself. Going in a group DOES have the added benefit of safety in numbers and shared expenses, but most of what I have seen are pre-packaged tours that end with the photo-op you mentioned. Thanks but no thanks. Maybe other folks might have some suggestions. How about some of you folks who have made the trip--- any thoughts? I would second Master Richard's recommendation of Master Jim DeBaca. I will also go further to recommend Master Jerry Stine, also 6th dan in World Tang Soo Do Association under KJN Shin, Jae Chul. I had the pleasure of testing with both these masters last year. I would recommend both to anyone. Tang Soo!!! Danny Dunn <<<<<<<<<<> Dear Rain , >From the World Tang Soo Do website.
