Master Booth ran a great seminar consisting of Taekkyon leg takedowns, motion throws and finishing with painful manipulation of the body with that little stick on a rope. Very painful stuff. :) The best part was he demonstrated on colour belts for the whole night. Yahoo! The only downside was that our oldest black belt, 65 years young, wiped the mat with me. He sure likes to crank the pain on. The only thing that came close to the seminar was the sharing of some local cuisine and beverages with Master Booth at a tavern. Where else would the Canadian crew go? We'll see.... Not sure if people are interested in that kind of event or not...." I really hope you can get such a thing off the ground. I know it would be tricky at best but I just KNOW there is a lot more to Korea than sight- seeing and shopping. For instance, I could see a tour which visits only places identified with a particular theme. (5-day tour that traces the major events of the Imjin War). How about a tour which focuses on a common resource? (5 day tour of the top 10 military sites and museums). How about a temple pilgrimage with three-days of observance at each of three monasteries? How about a bookstore tour identifying the five top bookseller areas in 5 medium sized cities (that would neatly eliminate monsters like Kyobo Bookstore in Seoul and get people into the smaller stores). How about a tour of the more obscure celebrations, or localized events? Keep me posted wouldya? NORTH KOREAN Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Yong Il also told the gathering in Beijing that his country had the means to deliver nuclear weapons, an apparent reference to the Norths highly developed missile program. The comments cast a pall over Thursdays plenary session, which included representatives of the United States, South Korea, China, Japan and Russia, in addition to North Korea. James Kelly, the chief U.S. delegate, demanded that North Korea engage in the verifiable and permanent dismantling of its nuclear weapons programs, in return for which the United States would provide security guarantees and economic benefits. The administration official, who asked not to be identified, told The Associated Press that when Russia and Japan tried to point out some positive elements of the U.S. presentation, the North Korean delegate attacked them by name and said they were lying at the instruction of the United States. According to the administration official, Chinas delegate appeared visibly angry over Kims statement but responded in a moderate tone. Kim said his country was maintaining its position because the United States clearly had no intention of abandoning its hostile policy toward North Korea, the U.S. official said. POSITIVE STEP? A Bush administration official told NBC News that the North Korean statements could turn out to be a positive development because they would force the five other nations at the conference to confront the problem. It gives them a stake in it, too, the official said. Another U.S. official said those nations should take the statements seriously because North Korea had a demonstrated history of living up to its promises, noting that it followed through on its threats to pull out of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and had managed to reprocess at least some spent fuel rods. Other U.S. officials told Reuters that Pyongyang could be intentionally muddying the water by issuing contradictory statements. They certainly are talking about it, an official said of the threat to demonstrate nuclear capability. But during the first two days of meetings, the North also used words like dismantlement. Some of this is really nuanced stuff. We heard both things, another official said. This is characteristic of the North Koreans. They are all over the place. Either they do have or dont have nuclear weapons, depending whom you talk to. Its a calculated game of confusing the adversary and giving them mixed messages, this official said. CONSENSUS ON TALKS Wie Sung-rak, director-general of the South Korean Foreign Ministrys North American Affairs Bureau, injected a positive note, saying in Beijing that another round of talks probably would be held after the current round ends Friday. Asked to verify a Russian media report that all six would meet again within two months, he said: Its possible, but you have to wait until tomorrow morning. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov, the head of Russias delegation, said the six reached a common understanding to meet again within the next two months, probably in Beijing, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. The United States said it would hold no formal one-on-one talks with North Korea at the three-day summit, and the Americans played down the importance of an informal meeting Wednesday on the sidelines of the talks. That half-hour meeting between Kelly and Kim ended four months of official silence between the two nations. A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Beijing said on condition of anonymity, There will not be any separate formal bilateral meetings with the North Koreans. The informal direct contact between U.S. and North Korean officials suggests that both sides want a solution, although overcoming their deep philosophical and political differences will be a formidable task. Both sides would benefit if a sturdy channel of communication were re-established even if it did not lead to an immediate resolution of the nuclear dispute. Mere agreement this week to keep talking regularly would constitute some degree of success. At a briefing for South Korean journalists, Wie said North Korea had reiterated that it would shut down its program conditionally. North Korea is expressing its willingness to make itself nuclear-free, although it is making several demands, he said. He would not say what those demands were. He added that the United States said it was willing to address the issue of security concerns of North Korea. The six countries were still working on what kind of joint statement they would issue when the talks ended Friday, Wie said. DIRECT TALKS SOUGHT The Norths government had long demanded one-on-one talks with the United States, but it dropped its objections to the multilateral arrangement after Beijing agreed to host it. Many believe North Korea wanted such direct talks to increase its standing in East Asia and to convey its demands directly to the United States. Washington, though, wanted the opposite and said the situation affected the entire region and should be dealt with multilaterally. The three-day summit came together after months of political maneuvering when China a political ally of North Korea and an economic partner of the United States agreed to be the host. The six-party talks are a continuation of discussions from April, when U.S., Chinese and North Korean officials met in Beijing. Tensions and hostilities have been escalating since October, when Pyongyang acknowledged to Kelly himself that it had restarted a nuclear program it supposedly shut down. The United States has demanded that North Korea stop the program immediately, while the impoverished North has refused to budge without guarantees of security and economic aid. --__--__-- Message: 11 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2003 19:04:49 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: USTU Dan Conversion Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > dumb.
