If this is the case, then can any buffoon buy a claim to fame? Just wondering if this publication still deserves my money and attention. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was. So the Grandmaster then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The Grandmaster picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous -- yes. The Grandmaster then produced two cans of beer from under the table and proceeded to pour the entire contents in! to the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. "Now," said the Grandmaster, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - - your family, your partner, your health, your children, your friends, your favorite passions like your martial arts training - - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full." "The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else - - the small stuff." "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Play another 18. Attend JR West's seminar in Jackson. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal." "Take care of the golf balls first - - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented. The Grandmaster smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers!! I keep my school pretty simple WHITE BELT - Awarded to student after intro material is covered, usually about 4-5 classes. Orange, 8th Gup - Brown 1st Gup - 25.00 per test. Student receives belt, certificate, belt keychain when in stock, and sweaty uniform. Black Belt, 1st Dan - 50.00 fee to instructor. There is also a 50.00 fee that goes to Dr Jordan, since he and his evil henchmen (myself included) run the show. That usually ends up being Doc paying for dinner after the test for everybody though, so the student does see some of that back. Also, I have never seen anybody NOT certify their rank with the USKA after one of Doc's tests, and that is 50 itself. So 150 total usually for black. YITMA Charlie Veuleman. ************** L. When she won, she had to have a KKW to go to the Olympics. The win was considered to be prima facie evidence that she was qualified and an application was approved for her thru USTU to KKW. My understanding is that you can still qualify for the US team without holding a KKW, but you must have the KKW to compete internationally. This makes sense, if you think of it: The WTF is the governing body for the International sport and thus sets the rules internationally. They can require KKW. The USTU (at least, for now) is the governing body for the sport in the United States and thus sets the rules nationally -- but within the regulations of the Sports Act. They cannot require KKW and (finally) no longer do. I guess you could make the US Team without having a KKW; but the IOC would be within their rights to bar you from competing in the Olympics. If the sport is well defined, there should be no one body that decides who is qualified; particularly one country for the Olympics. The US does not determine who is qualified to be on another country's basket ball team and nor does the NBA. The bottom line is that the sport has rules, and if someone can compete and win with in these rules, they should be allowed to try, even if for example they are a red belt. They should definitely not be excluded from competing because they don't pay dues to one specific organization or have their "rank" (not ability) certified from an organization that doesn't even have a hands on method of testing and certifying competitors. There isn't a "Kukkiwon" testing board that comes to Arizona for a BB test. If TKD truly wants to be an international sport, it needs to start acting like one. There is no volley ball certification certificate from an organization outside the US that a person needs to have in order to compete in the trials for the US team or the Olympics. (Now maybe you have to be good and get invited to try out, but that's different). This whole KKW thing is political in nature and wrong as far as which Americans can represent the US in the Olympics. The KKW may ser another valid purpose and a good one, but strongly disagree with the current arrangement. At the end of the day, the most important thing is not your belt color, or certificate, but what happens when you step on the mat. I have recently read with interest the issues raised regarding Kukkiwon Certs and their value. I have practiced taekwondo in England over the last 18 years, and at various schools. Yet I have never been part of the BTCB which claims to govern WTF TKD in the UK. Out of interest, are there any UK taekwondo people out there who know how many UK practitioners are actually in the BTCB, AND how many are outside the BTCB? I have also heard that the BTCB is highly bureaucratic and inteferes heavily with the groups which it encompasses. Anyone care to comment?
