The training space is free. I do not charge for testing. The cost comes out of tuition. I have enough students to purchase everything I need for classes, and still have enough left over for cool summer BBQ's. If I was running a commercial enterprise, I would charge a nominal fee for the test...like $10-$15, just to cover costs. Black Belt promotion is free. After all the sweat, tears, hard work, broken you-name-its, and dedication to attain 1st dan with me, I provide a nice already in a frame certificate, customized belt, high quality dobak, and a fairly hearty a$$-whoopin' during the promotion. -- Mark Gajdostik TNT-Martial Arts 503-789-1356 --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "George Peters" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 05 Sep 2003 01:25:19 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Bruce on articles Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: I do partially agree with you, however if covers and article space is for sale just like ad space, eventually the party with the most capital gets to express it's views as the prevailing one even though this is not so. I'm sure you and I both have seen a master or someone extoll the virtue of a publication because they or their friends had been "selected" to be on the cover, making the neophyte artist or the ever gullible public believe that said individual(s) were put there because they are truly superior martial artists or have made some great contribution to the art(other than the fee to the rag). I guess in my mind(what a place to be) it is kind of like the difference between what is legally correct and what is truly righteous. Forgive me for being a bit of an idealist, I just like to see credit given where it is due. It would be far more laudible for these publications to seek out the "little guys" that have the dramatic influences on their students and communities, the master who has gone the mile, but is working on the final inch in his journey "up the mountain" than to see these publications sucumb to the allure of the almighty dollar. I entered “Ministry of Sports and Culture” and “Korea” into the YAHOO and ALTA VISTA” search engines. Both gave me the government of Korea but told me that it had moved to a new site (www.korea.net). I went to the .Net site and pulled up the home page. There were two categories --- ARTS & CULTURE and CULTURE & TOURISM. The MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND TOURISM is “mandated to promote Koreas’ culture, tourism and sports”. There was nothing there to suggest any formal recognition of any organization by the Korean government. There was a link that spoke to acknowledgement of HOSHINSUL HAPKIDO out of Canada by something called the World Kido-Hapkido Assn.(sic) headed by GM In Sun Seo. There was also a link about the World Kido Assn to California as well. Another page had a whole list of links to various entities in the US including GM Rim, GM Han (Bong Su), and even a link to the USKMAF! Nothing to suggest any government sponsorship, underwriting, oversight or whatever. The MINISTRY OF ARTS & CULTURE mentioned Taekwondo in passing and nothing more. The MINISTRY OF CULTURE & TOURISM had a sub-section for sports and recreation. No mention of any special oversight, recognition or authorization by the Korean government there either. I also went to the MINISTRY OF EDUCATION just on the off-chance that something might come up there. Nothing showed. So I guess its time to issue a challenge to the KMA community. Who wants to be the first to prove me wrong when I say that the whole “we are recognized by the government of Korea” or “our ranks are recognized, registered or otherwise mounted in granite by the South Korean Government” is a martial arts legend. Sometime ago someone mentioned that in Singapore kids signing up for MA classes had to go to the local police station and register. Real easy to see how this could be misread into registering “deadly weapons”. I think the same thing happened with the Koreans. At one time folks in the Korean government backed various factions in the KMA and sorta ran interference for them one way or another, and the limited event sorta took on a life of its own. So unless a person can specify the officer and function, the agency or department who will attest to some special governmental recognition perhaps its time to begin to ask that we step away from this kind of advertising, yes? But, good luck to you however you choose to handle it....." I know this must be very confusing to a lot of people but let me suggest something and see if this makes sense. Actually, I am doing it for ME. I think one of the best compliments that one can give a teacher is to work to emulate their behavior. Both Rudy and JR work to live their lives with integrity. In plain language that means they work to "walk it like they talk it." When Hackworth acted out against both Rudy and JR they dealt with it in what I consider pretty classy fashion. If I am going to associate with folks of this caliber then it only follows that I would want to conduct my affairs in the same classy way, right? Hey, I'm not always successful. I just mention that its a goal that I shoot for. The other benefit to me is not just to act "right" but also to refrain from acting "wrong". On BUDO-SEEK (BTW: I can no longer access the Net) my challenge was not to be dragged into the kind of mud-slinging that Frank and Robert have made their SOP. Anyone who had a chance to read the posts could see that they were working overtime to make something out of nothing. However, if I had been pulled into the sort of nit-picking, back-biting personal antagonism that seem to be the hallmarks of that group, what does that say about me and MY value system? In the end it has all become a mute point. I'm persona non grata and don't expect I'll be going back in this lifetime. I made my point and thats about it. However, I will say that my experience is, I think, more representative of the sort of battles we folks who have adopted KMA as a lifestyle need to be willing to face-down. FWIW. As, I think it was, Brian indicated, it is the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. You will recall that the Ministry of Education was the government office that the Daehan Kidohae associated with back in the mid-1960s. I believe the DKA was the first org to receive this type of government recognition. That ministry responsibility has now been taken over by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. I have attended three of GM Suh's seminars and every time have been fortunate enough to get hands on training from him personally. (I did notice that others at the seminars did not, I feel, simply because they didn't approach him.) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just a quick heads up...Somebody on the list has a virus. Klez.h@mm. I'm receiving returned email to my box that was not sent by me, but has been sent to some addresses I recognize from the list. Rich Hodder, Mister Timmerman, and Dakin Burdick are three that I can recall. The Klez will farm e mail addresses from your hard drive and spoof the sender, maybe drop a backdoor type virus and cause all kind of mischief. I understand that this variant may also shut down some AV software. You should check out your machines because this is a nasty virus/Trojan.
