I see the consensus so far on this issue (for the most part) has been that the breathing should be progressively quieter. What is the advantage of breathing quieter, or less, during form practice? ie: More power?... techniques work better vs. attacker?... Better for health? What are the drawbacks of breathing forcefully, or loudly? Does it make techniques less effective?...is it bad for your health? BTW, No Mississippi trip for me this weekend either, I won't miss the heat, but I'll sure miss seeing everyone. ".....Second, they taught us that focusing on a specific range could end a fight much quicker than learning thousands of techniques in a all of the ranges. Kano introduced the idea of keeping his people locked into training solely in unarmed combat until about 2nd black, after which he slowly began to introduce common weapons (mainly to appease the older styles that had come to be represented in the Kodokan consortium)....." I understand the need to focus on a narrow range of fighting options and then polishing those to a high degree. What I think of differently is WHOSE responsibility this is. In Hapkido if I learn 200 techniques, I guarentee that MY personal kit of 25 Tried-&True techniques is going to be different from those of another student in the same class. However, to automatically teach only those 25 techniques to my students when I am a teacher is a disservice to the art and the student. I believe each student should learn the same 200 techniques and make their own personal decision about what will wind up in their personal catalogue of techniques. After a few generations those techniques which are regularly un-practiced will inadvertantly fall to the wayside while other material which pops up time and again will gradually become part of the overall catalogue of 200 techniques. But I don't think it will happen simply because one person decides to make alterations in the curriculum within a single lifetime. Afterall, even with Funakoshi and Kano, there were still people who went back to pre-cursor arts like Okinawa- Te and Kito-ryu Ju-jutsu, rather than settle for Shotokan Karate or Kodokan Judo. So a stranger who has never trained me is going to assess my skill based on what he sees in an afternoon, right? His curriculum or mine? " How is this different from taking a driver license test? or a bar exam? or a SAT, or a CPA exam, etc. There are lots of tests we have to take in our personal and professional life that are graded by strangers. Can someone learns enough to pass these tests. Definitely. And we all know of incompetent doctors, lawyers, ... Martial arts is one case where faking it is a little harder. You can always teach a black belt form/hyung to a white belt but he/she will not be able to perform it like a real blackbelt with many years of training. If a white belt can perform like a blackbelt then may be he/she deserves to be a blackbelt. To me, paying moneys for a test and something to hang on the wall is a business transaction, pure and simple. You can succeed with or without that piece of paper, and there are plenty of examples of both cases. I know that you are planning to test for your 4th dan. Why do you want to do that? Who are you trying to impress? What are you trying to prove? I am not trying to be disrespectful and I am not looking for answers to those questions. I asked those questions to make the point that if you think that you are good enough to be a 4th dan, and your instructor agrees, then the testing is just a formality. It does not matter who is judging you. You are just paying for a piece of paper that is of some commercial/personal/emotional value to you. Just my opinion. I am referring to your comment "And when all is said and done with me and my fancy wallpaper, is the Hapkido any more authentic? Is the swordwork still something someone made- up so it can be taught to people in Alabama who don't know the diff?" Being from Alabama and being raised in Tennessee, I am very regionally sensitive regarding put-downs from those of the "northern persuasion". You need to be more regionally inclusive and celebrate its diversity. (In case anyone takes this seriously, my tongue is firmly in my cheek.) SECOND CHANCE ANNOUNCES FREE UPGRADE OF ULTIMA/ULTIMAX VESTS CENTRAL LAKE, Michigan Second Chance Body Armor, Inc. announced today it will begin an immediate program to upgrade or replace its Zylon-based Ultima and Ultimax protective vests, saying that previously worn Zylon vests wear out faster than expected and that there is a potential officer safety issue. The custom-made vests are worn by thousands of police officers and others who need protection from armed assaults. Under the announced program, officers will be given a choice of a free upgrade to their current vest that will assure its performance throughout the warranty period, or purchase of a new Monarch Summit vest at a significantly discounted cost. The upgrade involves the insertion of additional pads in a current vest and can be accomplished within minutes by individual officers. Either option can be ordered by contacting a toll free Ultima Hotline (1.800.828.VEST) or the companys customer service department (1.888.844.5721). Vest owners are asked to have the serial number of their original vest so that manufacture of the custom-made pads or replacement vest can begin. The voluntary upgrade program was announced following a series of in-service vest tests performed by Second Chance that indicated the Zylon-based vests wear out more rapidly than expected. We want to apologize for any inconvenience incurred by our customers, but we felt this is the right thing to do and we want to carry this program out as quickly as possible, said Paul Banducci, president of Second Chance. We have always stood behind the quality of our products and we will continue to do just that, he added. In the more than 30 years that Second Chance has been manufacturing soft, concealable body armor, no vest has ever failed to stop a round it was designed to stop. Over that same period, the company has documented over 900 officers lives saved, more than any other body armor manufacturer. _______________________________________________ Policedo mailing list Policedo@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/policedo --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 17:13:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Breathing To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Well I don't know about the better you get the quieter(sp?) your breathing should be, but you will know when to breath certain ways. For instance, in doing something like lifting something heavy you may want to use steady, flowing breathing, and for a forceful strike you may want to use a sharp exhale....to give a better description, some kung fu forms when you strike you release your energy and breathe through a yell that sounds like "HA!". Then in chi focused styles, you focus on smoother breathing.
