Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Re: KHF Dan Rank Exam. Bruce writes: "2.) So my Dan rank is issued by the KHF who now has my money and I have their cert hanging on my wall. What exactly does this mean? ………. So the KHF says I am a "master". What exactly does THAT mean? …. 3.) And if one month after I get my cert and the Board of Directors has a falling out and the people left behind make the KHF into the Fraternal Union of KIDO Officials …… where do I and my fancy wallpaper stand then? 4.) And when all is said and done with me and my fancy wallpaper, is the Hapkido any more authentic? ……." Bruce makes several very good points here. The basic question is what real or ultimate benefit is received for paying this significant money to some fellows in KHF. The next key question is what is it worth to you in terms of money ($$$). If you run a Hapkido school, you probably need to know if belonging to KHF is a selling point which will result in more students for your school. My guess is very few, if any, new students would care one way or another. Most new students probably never heard of KHF. So one could conclude that KHF has little or no value in gaining new students. If you are seeking a promotion in rank and are not currently affiliated with someone or organization than KHF maybe a good alternation. Obviously, one would have to compare it with other alternatives. One should shop around and considering some of the excellent Grand Masters and Masters in the USA. For most of us, the travel and language issues would be significant less for an alternative in the USA . In addition, does it make any difference where you get your next Dan. Many Masters find themselves changing instructors latter in their careers for one reason or another, so change is not uncommon. If you run a school, it may make a difference to your senior students because students do care about how there instructor is viewed by the MA community which in part is based on their credentials. If you do it for recreation and not money than it is less important. Finally, what is it worth to you in terms of money is based on your situation. I believe that by shopping around and properly researching your alternatives, one will reach their own conclusion. From what I have looked into, it doesn't seem as plentiful as some Korean arts. It seems big in Germany though. Many web pages. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: If what you crave is standardization, may I invite you to investigate the International Tang Soo Do Federation under the auspices of Grandmaster C.S. Kim. All schools must practice the same and the instructors are certified only by GM Kim. All instructors are also required to attend periododic seminars so that everyone is maintaining the same standards. Instructors are also to train with GM Kim personally at the headquarters so that he can oversee all facets of your education. The training is as traditional as I have seen in a western country. Not that I'm stump-jumping for the federation, but if you tested in the federation, it would not matter if the master proctoring your test was from Puerto Rico, Washington state, Wales, or Pittsburgh as standardization and the traditional aspects always prevail. You can make an appointment with Grandmaster Kim anytime you wish to contact him, as there is never a bad time to discuss martial arts. He has always done his best to help anyone (at least to the best of my knowledge). I also am of southern extraction and take umbrage, sir, to the fact that you did not mention GRITS when you mentioned southern culinary delights. It is a known fact that many of us have withered up and perished , being berefit of such sustanence. By the way a kid at my daughter's high school had his driving privliges revoked for leaving a confederate flag kerchief on the seat of his vehicle. I'd like to ride a few of these new age history revisionists on a rail and send them where they belong. I have been training in the arts since the early '60 and can tell you guys to test this out : stand at attention and also in ready position then take a deep breath and start to make your body strong in another wors tessed up and start breathing ou hard and tell your self if you realy feel your power. After you do this you will have the answer to the question about breathing and power. Then do the same ind relax your body and breath slowlly also do it breathing fast but not hearing your breath and you will confirm the answer to that question and what you feel best apply it !
