I do :) Hankido is fairly new, and largely misunderstood (I guess). That would be the reason why there aren't that many Hankido practioners around. Even in Korea there aren't that many people, you could consider Hankido masters. The Hankumdo curriculum is somewhat marginal, that's why you see a lot of Korean teachers connected to the IHF, training Hae Dong Kum Do as well. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sat, 13 Sep 2003 10:18:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] New job=Schools in Syracuse ? Schools can be Hapkido, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Arnis-Escrima, etc. Oh, I notice there are a lot more Italians in Syracuse than Tulsa, OK. Reminds me of the Italina neighborhood I grew up in New York City. Today my son is receiving his 1 Dan in Moolimdo Hapkido. He is 8 years old. I started training him when he was 4, but he didn't have the focus or the attention span. So, we had to wait until he was 5. I have worked with alot of kids and few under the age of 5 can even make it through a class. Besides when did this 3 year old start his training, when he was six months old. What's next, Grandmaster at 10. So one could conclude that > KHF has > little or no value in gaining new students. Hello John: You make some good points in your letter, and I agree with the above wholeheartedly. Like you say, new members a school attracts are mostly based on what they see in the school itself, not what hangs on the wall in terms of certification or allegiance. This usually comes later, and so in the end it CAN make a difference. It is our job as the Master of the school to make sure that we leave options open for our students. For example, if a new student joins a school that has no "roots", this may later prevent the student from reaching goals s/he had not initially thought of. If, as the Master of your school, you care about the entire career of your students, this should matter to you. As such, a prudent school owner must make hard decisions he or she can live with today; however, s/he should keep in mind the eventual goals his or her students might later have. Not doing so might cause such a student to feel let down later on. With this in mind, I try to place myself in my students' shoes, so I can give them options I myself may have little use for. In the end, all I can hope for is that I have made some wise decisions that will benefit my students. Sort of like a parent raising a child, with the hope to leave ALL the doors open for the child. George has another take on Bruce's letter, and he writes; > All schools must practice the same and the instructors are > certified only by GM Kim. All instructors are also required to attend > periododic seminars so that everyone is maintaining the same standards. > Instructors are also to train with GM Kim personally at the > headquarters so > that he can oversee all facets of your education. The WKSA has a similar program, and having had the opportunity to see this up close and personal, I can vouch for the fact that it is near impossible to achieve this lofty goal. In fact, I have seen students taught by the same teacher in the same school fail to standardize a curriculum to perfection. IMHO, there is nothing wrong with that, as long as your ego can handle it. Students are as different as a bunch of kids in a family (or even more so), and they become individuals much to the chagrin of anyone who wants to make carbon copies of hims or herself. While standards and quality control are a must, I do not see it as a mandate to stifle individual creativity or ability as long as a parent guides his child to grow up to his or her fullest potential. Although I have heard some good things about GM Kim, some leaders have taken their goal of uniformity too far. In the end, this can actually cause problems within an otherwise good organization, just as it has caused many good kids to run away from home. Too much freedom causes as many problems as not enough freedom, and it takes a highly skilled person to take his or her students to the very pinnacle of their ability AND keep his or her organization from falling apart. As far as I see it, belonging to an organization that does not provide for growth (a teacher who has no one to teach him will become stale) is useless, and so is the certification it provides. On the other hand, an organization that does not allow its members to grow as individuals (dictatorship) is just as bad. School owners have an awesome responsibility to choose wisely, because their choices will affect their students. When did he/she start training? Most children can't retain or their attention span is at least 3 minutes long. Common whats this world comming to. I heard of people "giving away" Black Belts but this is unbelieveable. Get real my man you don't honestly think we or should I say me believe that BS do you. Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. An amazing time spent with amazing people, not just on the mat but over lunch, dinner, and late into the evening. Then starting all over again the next day. More later. But for now... can't wait until next time, in six months. I think they have lost sight of what martial arts are all about; ie. 'the goal is not as important as the journey taken to reach it'. If this ancient philosophy still holds true, then what experience could these children have possibly accumulated? In my region, a blackbelt is as much a mental & spiritual achievement as it is physical. Organisations who dole out blackbelts like lollipops make a mockery out of those who are dedicated to the noble arts.
