A 3 1/2 basically 3yr old and a 5yr old recieving black belts in TKD. This is outta control. Thier is no way a child of those ages can understand the concepts of holding a black belt. It's not about the attention span as much as being able to perform. I mean a child under the age of 16 is not capable of performing, understanding, nor realizing the importance of holding a black belt. My son is 7 and has been training since he was old enough to learn around 3 or 4. However he just trains. He is still a white belt because I refuse to let him promote. He knows the poomse/Forms for up to 3 ranks. BUt he doesnt perform them to my appreciation. Once I see him perform them with quality he will begin to test. He will hold each rank for at least a year when he starts promoting till he developes proper attitude, and power and knows how to perform. ALot of this stuff of kids recieving b b at an early age is part of why TKD gets such a bad raport from other arts. I mean I get tired of hearing people talk down on TKD but alot of it is the Ranking and the performance of alot of TKD 'ist. Because of lack of training and the teachers mentality to make a quick buck. Its disgusting.. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2003 09:01:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Richards To: Dojang Digest Subject: [The_Dojang] Newest Micro Mugger Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net 3.5 year old blackbelt...do what? My son received a Dobohk for his third birthday. I allow the frequency and length of his lessons to vary with his attention span (5-15 minutes). Tuesday is our scheduled evening. In 9 short months he has learned 1. Attention, bow 2. Jab 3. Front Kick 4. Kihap 5. How to pee standing up and change his own pull-up I have to tie his Dobohk top and belt. I'm considering his 9th gup test to advanced white belt at age 4 in December, and letting him come to youth classes at age 5 if he makes it to 8th gup yellow belt by then. I guess I'll have to add a section to my blackbelt requirements. Must have graduated to "big boy" underwear.... Truly a wealth of knowledge was shared by our school owners, senior instructors, and Grandmaster Kim. Classes included Finishing Techniques, Internal & External Applications in Off-Balancing, Power-Throwing (using the opponent's power, of course), Arrest & Control Techniques, Self-Defense for Women & Small Defenders, Hand, Finger, & Thumb Strikes, and concluded with GM Kim teaching Peace Technique (escapes without hurting opponent). There were also informal sessions on how to win or lose money with your friends and Buffet Techniques. (I know some of you Jacksonites think you hold advanced rank in this last area, but we have some who could provide you some great competition!) To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This reminds me of ninjutsu. In theory everyone in the system should be teaching similarly across the board. I like that idea, but one bad thing is what happens if GM Kim dies unexpectedly? I think when a soke or head/founder of a system dies there needs to be some type of protection for the art so that other factions don't get started....you know to protect the art. He has a chiropractic clinic and also has a sign hanging on his building that says "Hapkido Self Defense". I'm going to contact him, but I thought I would check here first to see if anyone has anything to offer. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net This is my first time writing to the digest. I cannot possibly keep silent any longer. I'm 24 years old and I'm currently 3rd dan in Tang Soo Do. Been training for almost 13 years. This business of 3 and 4 year olds getting Black Belts absolutely boggles my mind. Is this an instructors attempt at drawing in more students by promoting anyone who joins his school to black belt? I can't help but feel like the value of being a black belt is certainly getting lower and lower with each passing day. When I was younger I used to look up to black belt level as being something prestigous, something that takes TIME, SACRIFICE, and countless hours of HARD training. Not anymore, huh? It's an amazing trick though, I guess the instructor who awarded those "babies" 1st and 2nd Dan figured out a way to teach the child as a fetus in the mother's womb. Maybe when i get married, I'll try that on my wife. Days filled with training, evenings of culinary temptation (or indulgence), nights with friends in the hotel bar, late night international parties at a certain prominent ringleader's, I mean, instructor's room.... How could I miss all that?! Then again, I do have a couple MA friends trying to talk me into a conference at about the same time in Florida.... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Mr. Timmerman: The rigidity in our org. is only in what is taught, how and when. Personal creativity is not stifled to maintain "clones". After a student knows the system, they have to be free to choose techniques that suit their body type, agressivness, etc. All are taught the whole system, then make their own choices as to what one might employ in a given situation. GM Kim even encourages all students to study and learn as much as possible any type of related material. What I meant to stress was that all instructors know and view the materials for a test the same way. When I teach, I teach as I was taught ,never adding or taking from what I was taught so as to maintain the "sameness" with what was taught by GM Hwang Kee to GM Kim. Test requirements for any given rank are always consistent. Whether you chose to employ all or none of the techniques in your own defense is up to you. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there is rigidity in what is taught and the test requirements, there is great freedom and creativity in how one adapts the art to one's self. In the years I have belonged to our federation, GM C.S. Kim has been a wonderful person to know, a great teacher, a hard taskmaster and expects much from himself and his students. He is one of the few people I know who will express great joy in the success of another person where others would only feel envy or worse. He has helped me to be a better human being. Please forgive me for not expounding in my previous post, I only wished to convey to Bruce that there ARE places one can go and have "consistency" in material required and in the testing of said material. I also must point out that if one studies what is supposed to be "traditional" there simply MUST some type of conformity in the teaching and the learning, if non- traditional then people seem to make up requirements to suit a situation or whatever. Respectfully, George Peters P.S. I suppose I'll pay dearly for the remark on traditional and non. _________________________________________________________________ Need more e-mail storage? I thought about discarding all the backed up posts to the list, save for Master Hodder's post preceeding this one but then decided otherwise. The passing of Mrs. West is a total and complete shock. I'm just glad I got one last hug from her yesterday. The first time I met her she insisted on giving me a hug as I left town. Yesterday was no different. And her smile always contained a beaming radiance, a radiance that I will never forget. The meanest woman in the world on the mat, and perhaps the sweetest one off the mat. Renee, we miss you. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gm West and the entire family.
