While we never met, as members of the martial arts community, each of us can be impacted by the accomplishments, successes and, yes, losses within our community. I am reminded of the words of John Donne: "No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. " May God's peace be with you. It was great seeing everyone again and meeting some of you for the first time like Lawren, Joan, John, and Lloyd from Master West's school as well as finally meeting Bruce Sims. Now I have a face to put with all the informative posts. As I was the only one from WV to make the trip I am hoping that several of my students will make the trip with me in the spring. If any of my students are reading this post, start making preparations now! To see and meet such a high quality group of people is well worth the trip in itself. I plan on making every Jackson seminar from here on out. I highly suggest everyone else do the same. As for the passing of Master Renee West, like Ray says, what to say.... I met her for the first time back in March and was shocked when she and Master J.R. West invited me to sit at their table for dinner on Saturday night. I had some great conversation with her and she seemed to cling to every word I spoke. She was actually interested in what I had to say! She is a great person in every way. I say "is" instead of "was" because she will always be with us in one way or another. Maybe not physically, but always spiritually and deep in everyone's hearts who had the great opportunity to meet her. I remember her watching me get thrown to the ground during Master Hilland's cane session on Sunday at the dojang. It seemed like the harder I hit the mat, the bigger she smiled. Master West, from all of us up here in West By-God Virginia, our prayers are with you and your family. Mrs. West, Renee, was an extraordinary person of extraordinary strength and focus, as anyone who had witnessed her execution on the mat could attest. Those of you who have read my posts, though, have come to know that I believe strongly that a successful martial artist, an accomplished warrior, is able to translate the principles of combat and conflict resolution to their lives off the mat and out in the community. More than anything else, I will remember the balance, tenacity, and focus I witnessed in Mrs West in her commitment to facing down tough challenges wherever they came up. Thereau told us that "men lead lives of quiet desperation", and there is truth there. For me, Mrs West was an extraordinary example of that desperation translated to "grace under fire." Renee was a wonderful woman, as a martial artist and a person. I'm proud to have had the opportunities with her there in Jackson. She will be missed by many. Thoughts and prayers from Montana are going out to GM West and his and Renee's families.
