All eventualities are provided for. The managerial hierachy of the org itself takes care of everything. No person is in a position of real power who does not belong there.(key word:real) If there is a question, why do you conjecture or speculate when all you have to do is contact the org and ask? Not picking on YOU per se, just that yours is the most recent post I've read......" First off, thank you for the kudos. I hope that what may happen is that many folks begin to "stir" their respective pots. I know that the KMA are steeped in Confucian aspects of Korean culture and as such it is considered "unseemly" to question matters. We Americans, however, can sometimes get away with such questioning by invoking our "crass" or "culturally insensitive" natures, yes? :-) My point is that if it is at all possible, I think many people need to take you up on your suggested invitation and contact their organizations and ask questions. Maybe not "in yer face" kinda questions, but questions that affirm that the member is in the loop with the organization and that the organization has a member who has expectations for their membership and the dues that are paid. Now, in my own case, I am not a TKD player, so contacting the gentleman you mentioned would not really apply to me specifcially. However, I have been in contact with Steve Seo (World Kido Federation) and received a rather lengthy letter in response. Did it answer all my questions? Not really, but it does open the door to dialogue about where I can go and what I can do with the organization. BTW: I had originally planned to post that letter in its entirety, but since I did not put that on the table when I contacted Steve it didn't seem like the thing to do without checking with him first. More on that later. Dear Gaby: Hal is definitely still engaged with Hapkido and very much involved with the Korea Hapkido Federation, which is all to our benefit. I don't know if he will be attending the visit by Oh See Lim to the testing that is scheduled for down in Florida. Its really hard to say WHATS going to happen with the KHF in this country, but he is very much still hard at work. Thanks for asking. Des Moines police sent a huge basket of flowers and plants. Hastings officers will drive 21/2 hours to Omaha to participate in the funeral procession. Support has come from all directions as law enforcement agencies respond to the death of Omaha Police Sgt. Jason Pratt. "It's a big family in law enforcement," Hastings Capt. Gene Boner said Monday. "It doesn't matter what color your uniform is." Several agencies will help to police the city and control funeral traffic Tuesday so as many Omaha officers as possible can attend Pratt's funeral. The Nebraska State Patrol has lent eight troopers. Sixteen Douglas County deputies will patrol the northeast precinct, where Pratt worked. Douglas County deputies will take calls in western Omaha during their regular patrols. Bellevue police officers will control traffic around the Civic Auditorium, the funeral site. Law enforcement representatives and Mayor Mike Fahey announced a new fund-raiser for the Pratt family on Monday. T-shirts bearing the Omaha police logo and Pratt's badge will go on sale Tuesday afternoon for $15 each. I was able to get a great deal of info out of him about the KMAs over lunch. Can't wait for his book to finally come out. BTW, he was also VERY interested in hearing about the supposed KHF goings-on wrt our chubby friend down in Florida. Stay tuned for the outcome... Renee will be missed by all, but by none so much as me. She was a very large part of my life and will leave a hole not easily filled, not only in me, but in a large group of friends and acquaintances as evidenced by the "Celebration of Renee's Life" party at Wayne Watkins' house this past Saturday. What a time, just my family and me and a small group of 1,000 of Renee's closest friends, all contacted by word of mouth, it was quite a party and Renee would have been pleased. I wish to thank all who sent cards and flowers and if I miss someone when we attempt to send out "thank-you" notes, please know that at one point we just gave up recording data. My family and I are probably faring better than we ever could have expected, and we are doing everything we can to move ahead in peace. I have an announcement or two: 1) Wayne Watkins has been promoted from "Chief assistant to the assistant chief" to just plain, old "Assistant chief (my old spot)". Wayne already was my closest friend, and I can't improve on that title at all, although he would certainly deserve it after all the things he did this past week, not only for me, but for my entire family as well. 2) Dr. Suzanne Sanders now takes over as the meanest women, shoes not so easily filled, but she will do a magnificent job, and she has a great assistant in Dr. Audrey Tsao. 3) The "Stealth-Van" will be heading out for Tampa (Oct. 4th); MD/PA ( Oct. 18th); Houston (Oct. 25th); and Ft. Wayne (Nov. 8th). Please come by if you get a chance. 4) I will be forwarding a picture of Renee and I from better times to Ray Terry, who along with Jere Hilland, attended this weeks celebration only 4 days after leaving Jackson following the Seminar, and perhaps Ray will provide a link for anyone who wants to have a picture in their mind of who we were talking about. 5) Remember to tell the folks that are closest to you, exactly how you feel about them, you might not have another chance! Thanx again to all....J. R. Writing Women in Korea explores the connections among translation, new forms of writing, and new representations of women in Korea from the early 1900s to the late 1930s. It examines shifts in the way translators handled material pertaining to women, the work of women translators of the time, and the relationship between translation and the original works of early twentieth-century Korean women writers. The book opens with an outline of the Chosun period (1392-1910), when a vernacular writing system was invented, making it possible to translate texts into Korean--in particular, Chinese writings reinforcing official ideals of feminine behavior aimed at women. The legends of European heroines and foreign literary works (such as those by Ibsen) translated at the beginning of the twentieth century helped spur the creation of the New Woman (Sin Yusong) ideal for educated women of the 1920s and 1930s. The role of women translators is explored, as well as the scope of their work and the constraints they faced as translators. Finally, the author relates the writing of Kim Myung-Sun, Pak Hwa-Sung, and Mo Yun-Suk to new trends imported into Korea through translation. She argues that these women deserve recognition for not only their creation of new forms of writing, but also their contributions to Korea's emerging sense of herself as a modern and independent nation.
