To get on the mat and learn and dish out Hapkido with some high-ranking people. I don't plan any photo ops either. I do agree with you that there may be many agenda's, most of which are selfish by nature. That is indeed unfortuante. He brings several of his senior students to help and assist. Depending on the ages of the students, they may split off the children seperately from the adults. The first half of the day is for everyone, the second half after lunch is for the adults, as we usually go over the military applications. Master West is there and teaching until we hit the "hapkido wall" where we are all just worn out and our heads overfilled with information. We look forward to seeing you and your students there! I work the kids program very similar in my school. Takes 6 to 8 years. Do the kids get restless? From time to time some do. Particularly when their friends who study in another school get a black belt in 18 months. But then, when they have a chance to test their skills, they are very happy. Of course, but so are the adults with whom they share the training! But we don't treat them like kids once they're there. Do they all find this easy? Nope. Do we support and guide them through the process? Yup. Do they all make it? Nope. But everyone in the school -- parents, too -- take this journey seriously. We've probably not promoted anyone prior to 12 or 13 years of age, but by that time, that young person would have been training for 6 to 8 years, at least 3 of them with the adults....." My apologies in advance for my title sounding a bit off color. I really liked your post and now I want to ask about --- well--- the end of your training spectrum as I believe that this is where the rubber really meets the road when it comes to Black Belts. For instance..... How old is your oldest Black Belt and how long have they trained with you? How long have they trained in the KMA? Do you expect them to be with you in another 5 years? How about 10 years? How about the rest of their lives? Now before you get nervous, I am not trying to put you on the spot, 'kay? What I am doing (in my own mind)as I write this is bumping a sense of committment to the KMA up against some of the other activities that people committ a lifetime to. For instance, tennis, swimming, golf and horsemanship all come to mind and even when a person is too old to play to full activity they still make the events, track standing and read-up on their favorite people. Now maybe there is no such thing as a Hapkido "Bears- Packers Game" but I wonder how many people find a home in the KMA and do they continue to demonstrate this the rest of their lives or do they sorta grow out of it? How young can a person be when they actually make the commitment to KMA as what they want to focus on compared to other hobby activities? Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" To: Date: Thu, 25 Sep 2003 16:00:34 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] 19th International Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sorry it took so long to comment about the workshop in Jackson a few weeks ago, but I have been busy and traveled a lot since then and I am just starting to get things caught up here at the dojang. Although, I still have yet to unpack from this weekends trip to Jackson. It was absolutely wonderful to see everyone again and to meet many new friends in hapkido and the other Korean martial arts at the 19th International two weekends ago. I continue to enjoy teaching and training at these events, that are not concerned with politics or grand standing, just practicing the martial arts and eating at buffets. It is always a pleasure to see Bruce's enthusiasm on the mats. Folks, he may like to talk, but when it comes time to put up or shut up, he will be the first one on the mats and the last one to leave. I, once again taught cane techniques and took part in the Master's demo. For the Women, Dr. Saunders and Dr. Tsao, both hapkido yudanja and great instructors, taught a women's issues class. By Sunday morning people started getting a little tired so when Ray and I were teaching, almost everyone attended Randal Sexton's amazing ki class. I did not get a chance to attend it, but one of my 2nd dan from Houston did and rave about it. He also had the opportunity, when Mr. Sexton still lived in Texas, to attend one of his on-the-beach ki retreats. Now that he is in Hawaii, he was the teacher that traveled the furthest this time. A position usually held by Master Booth from Australia. As always everyone had a great time. The USKMAF (at www.hapkido.com) has one of the best friends in hapkido anyone could ask for. That is Dr. Kimm He-young. As always, the good Dr. was in attendance. My students and I will be attending Mr. New's annual fall seminar hosting Master West this November 8th. I look forward to seeing everyone from the Midwest once again. Jere R. Hilland www.HapkidoSelfDefense.com --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Jason E. Seminar November 15th in Austin Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Inspired by the great time we had in Jackson and the anticipation of more fun in October at Master Hodder's, North Austin Tae Kwon Do will be hosting a two day seminar on November 15th & 16th. Ie... I believe it is a business ploy. You see them have anywhere from 3 to 5 ranks within 1st Dan black belt. They charge about $200 per test, so actually, their 1st dan exam would cost approximately $1000. Having 3 to 5 ranks within 1st Dan allows them to promote a student to beginning 1st dan within 12 to 13 months at two times a week. I have students who came from these schools and had below average taekwondo skills and NO knowledge of self defense. Personally, I don't agree with this method. Letting someone where the Black Belt too early can give them a false sense of security.
