Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: I heartily concur with what you wrote on the length of time it takes one to "absorb" the information imparted by one's instructor. Isn't it interesting how different people seem to learn differently,ie; Some learn by observing a technique, others recall best when something is explained in detail, some need things fed to them "piecemeal",and others like myself seem to learn "blocks of information". It seems that no matter how one learns best, a good system provides adequate time for a dedicated person to be able to test for their next level of proficiency. Not always a COMFORTABLE amount of time, but adequate none the less. The wisdom of those who have gone before us amazes me in its scope. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir, Was it Bruce Lee who said that "as long as people have two arms and legs there will be only so many things that you can do"? The older I get, the more I believe that there are very few if any techniques absolutey indigenous to a specific art. The more nationalistic individual may beg to differ, but it would appear to be so. I have seen many individuals knowing different systems for a lifetime have many similarities in their reporitoire. Each distinctly Chinese, Korean, or Japanese in its delivery, but sharing similarities. Whether this is because people are all similar, or these arts share a common origin(I'm ducking now!) is perhaps for a person much more steeped in wisdom than myself to say. I am surprised that he neglected to tell you that there are several threads on this issue in the archives...try between 6 to 18 months ago. My manual's minimum time in rank ads up to about 42 months minimum to get to 1st dan, but when people ask I say about 4 years or more. My two most senior students will have been with me 4 years when they test for 2nd gup red at the end of October, so it will be 5 years minimum for them. Last Tuesday I promoted my youngest 4th gup (age 7). Jordan has been with me for almost 3 years. I can still remeber his white belt class when he told me he wanted to quit because it was boring...In the last two years Jordan has been no less than twice a week every week, plus every demo and tournament I've been to and the last two Moja Kwan Seminars. Will Jordan be a blackbelt in 18 more months?...probably not..could Jordan be a 1st Poom in 18 months? maybe...Will Jordan have to wait until he's 10 to test for 1st poom/dan?...time will tell... I am still finalizing my ideas, but after much off-list discussion with Master Lee, and reading the many on list posts, I have determined that I am teaching a different youth and adult cirricula. In the end I will most likely have a poom or jr blackbelt for at least 1st and 2nd dan/poom. Just by the nature of minimum age 5 and time in rank I use the default minimum age will be around 10 years old +/- a few months depending on test cycle and birthdays. FWIW, I really like what Master Lee said about rank promotion require that the student show they are ready for the higher level of responsibility of the next belt level...I have been sharing that with even my 6 and 7 year old Orange belts (7th gup). OK enough rambling just my ten cents worth my two cents is free (Emenem) Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Huh? Do what? Come on folks. What a cop out. Or as someone else posted a ploy for more money for testing fees to a Take Your Dough McDojang. Here's a story that will help you visualize my rule. When I was Charlie V's age a couple of my running buddies used to say... Be careful "fooling around" with those "fast" girls, you might have to walk down the street holding her hand some day.. OK use that image with I'm going to Jackson with my newest Blackbelt and I walk up to my mentors Master McHenry and Master West and say....Meet John Doe, my newest probationary 1st dan. He's been with me 18 months, forgot one form, missed one of his breaks, and has basic motion that would look like crap on a green belt, but he's a nice guy so I awarded him probationary 1st dan, and if he continues to stink up the dojang with his mediocre technique I plan on testing him for recommended 1st Dan after 6 more months of tuition and another test fee. Yea Right... Train with Jung Do in your hearts the rest is commentary, Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! We had a seminar Friday evening for the young warriors. They all had a lot of enthusiasm and worked hard at all the fun stuff we worked on (it’s all fun stuff). I heard some of them were pretty jazzed and bouncing off the walls after they got home. I know I sure had a good time working with them. The adult seminar was held Saturday. Master Charles (MC) had a good turnout and we all worked up a good sweat. I believe there were 4 other TKD and 2 TSD schools represented not including myself. We covered a lot of material and I believe everyone went home feeling they learned something and had a great workout. After dinner it was back to the dojang for a Dan testing that went well, except for dodging the paddle that was kicked across the room (I think they were aiming at me). Sunday morning I was able to spend some quality time with the local TSD instructors before I had to leave. The students were a pleasure to work with and get to know. I feel I have some new friends in Georgia now. Southern hospitality was not lacking at all. I want to thank Master Richards and his beautiful family for being so kind and taking care of me all weekend. I also had the honor and privilege of being invited by the future Kwan Jang nim of Moja Kwan TangSooDo to watch Peter Pan with him and trade stickers with the little princess Angelica. I had a great time and hope that next year’s Moo Do Camp is even better. Friday we didn't meet the fanfare of the Austrailia group, but Niko and I met Master McHenry at the Atlanta airport and treated him to lunch. Niko made sure there was plenty of table converstion :-). Friday night Master McHenry showed about 15 youth (12 of mine and 3 from Joe Clarke's school) the difference in skip kicks and hop kicks. After the hop kicks it was on to spin kicks. I closed with a little session on basic falling and rolling. Many of my karate moms commented on how well Master Mac worked with the younger crowd (as young as 5 in my group). In fact here are some comments..."Devon was so excited, that for the first time in two years of training he fell asleep in his dobohk." "Kalin is so pumped he's still talking about the seminar this (Monday) morning." And two of my 4th gups that did the adult session Saturday got so excited they left dinner early to go out in the parking lot in the rain to work on the Ji Kum Hyung so they wouldn't forget it. Grand Master Timmerman is wearing off on us :-) A trip to Hotlanta wouldn't be complete with southern culture and hospitallity without a Saturday morning trip to Waffle House. Our adult seminar lasted from 9 to about 4:45 and Master McHenry shared again the advanced kicking skills with even more kicks than Friday, and for the adult crowd he and I covered some sword work after lunch. As if that wasn't enough we rushed off to Longhorn's for dinner and then back to my Dojang for a blackbelt testing at 7 (ended up being 7:30). We finally got Master McHenry back to my house around 11ish but I kept him up till well after midnight talking about martial arts and family giri. Since we had him in Jowrja all weekend, Joe Clarke and I had a wonderfull private lesson on our upper Tang Soo Do material, including further corrections to my Wansu Hyung. After a hearty meal of Tex-Mex lunch, we rushed Master McHenry back to the Atlanta airport in time for his afternoon flight. I would like to thank his family for loaning him to us for a wonderfull weekend filled with many lessons. This book is a highly readable introduction to Korean pronunciation for students at all levels of proficiency. Beginners will find the information and practice they need to cross the threshold of intelligibility in Korean, while more advanced students will have the opportunity to fine-tune their pronunciation and improve their comprehension. The Sounds of Korean focuses on the most challenging features of Korean pronunciation. Careful attention is paid to the way in which a sound's pronunciation can be modified in different contexts. The first part of the text consists of an overview and chapters on vowel and consonant sounds in Korean, adjustment processes that modify speech sounds in different positions within words and phrases, and the role of prosody in expressing meaning and emotion. The practice exercises that follow are paired with the various contrasts and adjustment processes discussed earlier. These exercises, recorded on an accompanying CD by two native speakers (male and female) from Seoul, give students systematic, focused exposure to natural colloquial speech that represents the way Korean is actually spoken in the real world. "In terms of scope, depth, and efficiency, this book reaches much beyond the limited treatments of Korean phonology found in published language course books. It is a highly valuable addition to the resources for teaching and learning Korean." --Hae-Young Kim, Duke University Joel Bradshaw Journals & Web Manager University of Hawai`i Press 2840 Kolowalu Street, Honolulu, HI 96822 http://www.uhpress.hawaii.edu --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com Copyright 1994-2003: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
