West Florida Seminar Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Well the weekend is over and we all had a GREAT time doing Hapkido at Rusty Solomon's Tang Soo Do Dojang in Tampa. It was a fun filled day of joint locks, chokes, swedish meatballs, interesting stories and an all around cool time. I finally got to meet J.R. West and some of his crew and just let me say that they are all real hapkido players and really good down to earth people. Thanks to Rusty Solomon for hosting the event. We had quite a few Florida hapkido players show up for the event. Master Rick Nabors, Javier Agosto, Nick Nabors, me(Mike Tomlinson), James O'Neill, Marty Sapsford, Ron Gilotti, and a few more. There were also a lot of Tang Soo Do players and some TKD players also. For some reason our buddy over in Orlando who some of you affectionately call the chubby wannabee was not present. That seemed strange since I had read an email he had sent to some people last month saying that he was gonna come over and "interupt" the event? After a few people checked he seemed to be "out of town"? Oh well, he would of had a good time and maybe actually make some friends instead of enemies if he would just cowboy up and get on the mat instead of just talking on the keyboard. He seems to do the same exact thing when Doju Nim is in town to train at Master Nabors dojang. He is always invited but never shows up to actually train. Wow five years in a row and "never" in town? Oh well his loss I guess. I would like to give a sincere thank you to Master West for taking the time to teach us and talk about the history of his Hapkido. It is truly amazing to have a grandmaster in Hapkido give his time and friendship in a way that epitimizes what we in Hapkido want our family and friends to aspire to. Grandmaster West is truly a shining example of all that is good in the Hapkido world. Thank you again sir for sharing your time and techniques with me and some of my students.. I suppose part of the answer is to watch and see if the leadership (ownership) simply falls to the next family member in line. Another, part of the question, though, is what will people who are NOT in line gonna do? I think I got something of an answer with the announcement of a seminar in Colorado by Tae Jung thats coming up. I don't know this particular person so I went out on the Web and dig some digging. For those who are interested I found that Tae Jung studied under In Shik Hwang and made his reputation choregraphing fight scenes in MA movies. In turn In Shik Hwang studied under Chi Han Tsoi, known to most in the Hapkido arts as Ji Han Jae. Tae Jung is now the president of the World Hapkido Association, not to be confused with the World Hapkido Federation of GM Myung. Tae Jung has also studied Kumdo under the "legendary grandmaster Kim, Sohk-soon." I still need to dig a bit as I have not heard of this particular Korean "legend". The other personality mentioned on the website (World Hapkido Assn) was Choe, Hui Son who authored a number of Hapkido books. He is reported to have studied under Yoon, Byoung Ok with whom I am likewise unfamiliar but perhaps people who know this person might chime in here and tell me what his background is. OK, so here are parts of our next generation of personalities and organizations. I'm not supporting their activities or dissuading folks from attending. I just thought it would help to know who these folks are. Anyone have anything to add? FWIW. Confucius <> Dear 5th Gup, Follow the sagely wisdom of confucious...in your eagerness to learn (earn the next belt maybe) without thinking you might be bewildered. Or put another way, put some time between stimulous and response. Keep training the way you are with the same great attitude, then when your at total peace with your instructor's decision, respectfully ask him what areas he would like to see you improve in (leave off the tempting words "to be able to test for 4th gup"). Try looking at this as an opportunity to make your TKD training more journey oriented than destination oriented. Price shoppers are with us forever, but I don't think that lowering your fees is an answer. Say what you want about the mcdojangs, and I am loathe to give them any praise, but they do have the "get the student signed" thing down pretty well. And they are not the cheapest in town. And the one thing they harp on is telephone scripts that get appointments without giving out the price until they ask the third time. It's hard to do, because I am not a damn telephone sales guy, but their systems work. <> Thank you! I just needed another swift kick in the @$$ to go back to using PPT scripts again (Pivot, Profile, test close). I studied them, I just hate them because I'm not a *&$%*&^%$ telephone salesman either. I really only want to/need to invest time in the journey oriented students, but I know to pay for Jackson trips and all my AAU competitions I need to have a few dabblers in the dojang... As to price I came up with two solutions (again review from my mcdojang business study materials). 1. I offered a discount to existing students to covert from coupons to EFT's. I know some are totally opposed, but from the dojang's perspective, they are never late, and a lower percentage from my billing company. 2. I will be offering a "dabbler" special. Something less than $100 for a uniform and a few weeks as a final squash to the dreaded price question. 3. Being a rather blunt capricorn, I have told a few folks over the phone...telling you the price without the experience of a class to convert that price to (your perception of) value would be meaningless. However, I did just want to clarify one thing. I don't have a problem with calling someone Master Smith or Grandmaster Kim, although I wish the terms were a little better defined (i.e. 5th dan and above = Master. Does dan mean the same thing in Korean as it does in Japanese?). My only problem is calling someone "my" Master. This has a distinctly different meaning than "my instructor Master Smith". On a different note, just a little comment about the various Hapkido federations. A few weeks ago, I asked a question about a Hapkido school in North Olmsted, OH. I also saw on the school's sign that they were affiliated with the International Hapkido Federation. So I did a search on the Internet and found 3 different IHF's. I sent each of them an email asking if this school was affiliated with them. Now here comes the Rant. Only one IHF (GM Bong Soo Han) even bothered to respond and the best they could tell me was to look for GM Han's name on any of the school's literature. What good is belonging to a federation if they can't even provide the simplest of verifications? I know that if I send an email to the Kodokan asking about someone claiming to be ranked in Judo by them, they could at least verify that fact. Good training to you all, ===== Kevin Hostelley --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net Old digest issues available @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com Copyright 1994-2003: Ray Terry and http://MartialArtsResource.com Standard disclaimers apply.
