Now apply this to every day life, and voila... you have your most talented student write your newsletter and edit it yourself :) You could even suggest monthly topics. BTW, I like the Pay Pal idea. See how Ray's list can and does help us all when we quit bickering. Sharing good technical information and useful insights will help us all get better. Be a good guy, have good ties with your current parents, and treat your students like students on the floor, and better off of it. The rest will fall into place. Good luck with it. Hello Mr. Veuleman. I agree one hundred percent with this. As instructors and dojang owners, we have enough headaches and agitations. I too do what my competitor down the street doesn't do, I teach good, effective martial arts and I communicate with everyone whether they are in my dojang to train or just visiting. The toughest class I have is the two hour late class. I allow second gup and higher ranks to attend this class. If they get three verbal warnings,( i.e. slacking, dabbling or just plain not trying due to a very poor attitude) they are bumped back to the second or our middle class time. With as much "barking" as I have do, we continue to retain most students and we get most of our new ones by word of mouth. Although I demand a lot from myself and my students, by having good ties with the parents and recognizing each student on and off the floor has worked well for of retention. Did he say this on "Radio Show" ?...." >From what I understand there are a couple of strings going on the BUDO-SEEK discussion board. I get these little updates from folks now and again but its not like I sit up nights waiting to find out which end Mr. W is blowing out of this particular day. How much credit can you give to a bulletin board whose managers don't seem to understand fundamental rules for using punctuation? As far as control goes I can't say one way or another and its not like I have much investment in MA commerce such that I would give him a second thought. I don't see him showing up on my doorstep to dictate what and how I teach. He suggested once that he was thinking of stopping in and visiting me on a trip up to my area. I don't know that he ever made it up here. I DO know he didn't show up at my classes. Now, come the day that Dr. Kimm, GM Myung, GM Han or somebody else of standing suggests him as a teacher of authentic Hapkido arts maybe I'll give him a whirl. 'Til then he's just another kid who talks a lot but never says much. A troll by any other name...... FWIW. Master Toth has several times off-handedly remarked to me that he has noticed a tendency among some Korean Masters to hold back rank and advancement for people that seem to be more gifted/dedicated than other students. Perhaps this is due to higher expectations being placed on these students. There are some things that some people simply can't do. For example, there is a student in our dojang that probably will never be able to throw a head high roundhouse. It's not because he hasn't tried, more that his body mechanics won't allow it......" In a way isn't this a little like the discussion we have been having on the worth of a Black Belt? By this I mean that if a KMA teacher decides to take a handicapped student into the school does the same criteria apply for advancement? Is it fair to give a student who does not actually perform the curriculum an advancement? Are there different goals and criteria based on ability, and if so should the same ranking system be used? Instead of a 1st Guep one could say they are the best 1st Guep with one eye, or deafness. Then we back up to someone who is not handicapped per se, but maybe not as athletic--- like the person you mentioned who would not be able to throw a head-high RH kick. What about me? I can't do a Jump Spinning Heel Kick. Am I still a legitimate 3rd degree Black Belt or do I need to have an asterisk behind my name on each certificate I sign? What about teachers as they get older? Does someone who has made 5th degree begin to lose rank as they find themselves less and less able to perform the more acrobatic throws and falling? I'd really like to hear someone speak to some of these questions who is not a mamber of the KHF --- Korea-Hackworth Federation. In their case sending a check answers a multitude of questions. :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2003 12:58:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Ken McDonough To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Greetings from Joplin, MO Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net HI: Nice place to visit. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In my neck of the woods, we dont have any hapkido schools, but I have had the opportunity to train in some Yoshinkan aikido. I know that this may seem like a foolish question, but how do the throwing techniques in Hapkido differ from aikido? From the small amount of Hapkido that I have seen, the throws in the Korean style seem more aggressive. I have only my aikido experience to compare it to, but I know that there are a great number of Hapkido practitioners who participate in this forum who can probably shed a little light on this for me. I am by no means an aikidoka, I train taekwondo, but I have always been interested in Hapkido and its comprehensive approach to self defense.
