USTU is about to be dethroned in the USA as the NGB for Olympic TKD. Now one side of this Tangsoodo player says so what, but the other side as a coach, official and competitor in the AAU wonders what that could mean. Just suppose AAU Taekwondo took over that function in the USA. Would the AAU Taekwondo program begin to shove out the Moo Duk Kwan people in an effort to promote WTF patterns and competition? Or could possibly Moo Duk Kwan Korean Karate patterns be recognized at the olympic competition level? Will my Tangsoodo youth advanced belts have a Junior Olympics to train for or would I have to start teaching Taekyuk 8 and Koryo? Even worse would I have to go back to open tournaments for forms and point sparring competition? Just some nervous thoughts from someone who's kinda found a home in the AAU competition.... The other site quotes sections that seem to be from both the Kuk Sool and Hwarangdo texts that I have read as well as having a curriculum that looks to be very close to the one used in KSW. My guess is that at one time or another they were both part of the KSW organization. The etymology of the word capoeira is disputed by some scholars. Some Brazilian writers claim it is from the Amerindian Tupi language group and means an area of bush that has been cleared by burning or cutting down. In Portuguese, the language of Brazil, it also means a big chicken coop or a place where birds are fattened. Kongo scholar K. Kia Bunseki Fu-Kiau thinks that capoeira is really a deformation of the kikongo word Kipura/kipula. Boyd" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Sword dance and bub Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sword dance in Korean martial arts is referred to as "gum mu". There are three types which I have been exposed to at this time. The first and the one I feel has the most validity in martial arts practice is a meditative, inspired, outflowing of movements with no predetermined pattern. The second is a musical choreography that is used to tell a story, typically involving the cutting of a single sheaf of straw. The gist of the story is typically a familiar one (young woman, invited to perform before the king, enchants court with her dance, kills the king, gets torn apart). The third is a dance performance where the dancer holds a sword. Since 2000 I have seen a lot of sword dance clubs/groups start up. A popular misic video here in Korea and the general resurgence of sword interest in the world media might be responsible.A lot of the advertisements/websites look like most of them are offering martial arts practice although they are not. A few are adjuncts to established Korean sword styles. They always have young, attractive women in fantasy versions of korean traditional dress performing a hodge-podge of sword-ish techniques and whirling. Lots of whirling. As for the use of "bub"... Well, you can't use it by itself to mean anything recognizeable. Hyung and Poomse have a much higher rate of being understood by your average Kim. There is no reason not to use 'hyung' when dealing with swords. It seems to be common enough in Hapkido. I suspect your instructor grew up calling them gum-bub and wants them to be called gum-bub. If what he teaches you are forms with specific names such as ssang-su gum-bub or bonguk gum-bub, then of course he will expect you to refer to them as gum-bub. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 5 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2003 08:46:11 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: kukkiwon dan list Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "Who are the 10th Dans?  I was surprised to see so many, five. Or, imply a simpler explanation for what is really the case. Please take my reply at face value. You stated something, based on something you read. I gave you an admittedly terse reply, and you replied "Hmm I don't think so". To that, I said that other sources didn't concur. And I also said you could ask the guy yourself. Whether you ask him is totally up to you, and it shouldn't have come across as a challenge. My main point was that you stated something you read that was contradicted by other web pages. I didn't understand why I got a "Hmm I don't think so" based on the opinion of one web page. I didn't mean to offend you if that's what happened.
