Since Gen. Choi died last year there has been many many stories and opinions on the split of the ITF to the current state of 3 ITFs. This article is by far the best as far as explanation on what happened. I have practiced Chang Hon style TKD most of my TKD career and even met Gen. Choi back in 1989 at an ITF tournament in PA so this issue interests me dearly. Has anyone else read it? Any thoughts on the comments by the 3 ITF representatives/presidents? USTU is about to be dethroned in the USA as the NGB for Olympic TKD. Now one side of this Tangsoodo player says so what, but the other side as a coach, official and competitor in the AAU wonders what that could mean. Just suppose AAU Taekwondo took over that function in the USA. Would the AAU Taekwondo program begin to shove out the Moo Duk Kwan people in an effort to promote WTF patterns and competition? Or could possibly Moo Duk Kwan Korean Karate patterns be recognized at the olympic competition level? Will my Tangsoodo youth advanced belts have a Junior Olympics to train for or would I have to start teaching Taekyuk 8 and Koryo? Even worse would I have to go back to open tournaments for forms and point sparring competition? Just some nervous thoughts from someone who's kinda found a home in the AAU competition.... I just want to make sure that what I intended to say is what you actually heard. The issue of someone starting their own art, in my book, is only tangentially related to the issue I was addressing in my post. I would probably go 'round 'n 'round with you regarding the cohesion of your curriculum and authenticity of its content as relates to KMA. But that is not the issue I was talking about, though, coincidentally your response was right on the money. IMVVHO I think that it is quite possible for someone to teach a very authentic KMA and still have the ethics of a goat on Viagra. What I was wanting to say is that it does noone any good service (especially the dearly departed personality) to invoke a person, place or thing so as to lend authority or validity to an activity. I think this is particularly true when the conduct of the person themselves is suspect, as it may then reflect back adversely on the memory of the person, place or thing invoked. My guess is this may happen with the KHF if and when we ever get by all the recent unpleasantness. As many times as it and its president have been invoked to somehow validate the various antics we have seen, I'll anticipate that anyone seeking actual validation by a reputable organization will probably spend a lot more time shopping around. On the other hand, there are teachers who provide a quality education and could care less who think of them or what is thought. So, Charles, while you and I can debate about the content of your curriculum, delivering it with honor and integrity will guarentee that you will never hear a discouraging word outa me. :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2003 15:30:15 -0500 (CDT) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_Self-examination_Time_?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Jeff and Junya: Thanks for being patient with me. After reading my response a couple of times I had to ask MYSELF why I replied so strongly. If I think I have this right I am guessing that what you got --- for better of worse--- was some fall-out from the whole Hackworth thing which truely had nothing to do with what we are talking about. I think I have hit maximum capacity for people telling me to just call up so-&- so if I want tthe real deal. That seems to be Hackworths' response to a number of issues. Trouble is that the sources that he cites are not usually objective and distanced individuals but people who simply validate him as he would validate them, like business associates, members of his cadre, related organizations and so forth. This validation by members of a persons' "mutual admiration society" is not what I would call real validation. But in all fairness to you both, its a bad sign when my own issues would keep me from at least making the effort, right? Anyhow, apologies all the way around if I let my own stuff fog-up the conversation and thanks for keeping me honest. There are three types which I have been exposed to at this time......" Thanks for helping out with this. If I am hearing you correctly it sounds as though the use of "dance" (mu), "method" (bup), "form" (huyng) and "technique" (sool) are determined at the particular time that the material is organized, right? For instance, GM Myung uses "hyung" in the titles where the titles of the sword forms I practice have "bup" in them. Is this the same as using the terms "guem" and "do". I mean, technically, my sword is not really a "guem" (straight, two-edged blade) but rather a "do" (single-edged, curved blade) if we want to get picky, right? But then we run into the matter of people playing fast and loose with Korean. One would not actually call the activites of practicing cutting and form work with a live blade "kumdo" except that it has become KMA convention by this later date. But that could suggest that the work was done with a straight, two edged weapon. What would someone in Korea call what I do, then. Maybe "Do- Bup"? How about "Do Mu"? My teacher identifies it a "kum bup" and I dutifully follow suit. Whatcha think? BTW: I heard an interesting bit of trivia that says that the form CHOSON SEBUP should technically be executed with a straight sword rather than a curved one. Had you heard anything about this? If you "knew you were ready" you would probably be far from it. i.e. the more you know the more you realize just how little you really do know. Go for it. Test. I have trained hard, practised techniques and always sought to learn more. In my search (through the internet and collegues) I found that many other Tang Soo Do dojangs had different forms. This suprised me as I was under the impression that Tang Soo Do had a world-wide curriculum that it's students adhered to. However, my instructor has begun teaching us "Kiche" hyungs which, upon my inquiry were explained as simpler forms to cover basics better. It has come to my attention that these new "basic" forms are identical or very similar to the forms other dojangs have been using and was just wondering if there was pressure to conform to a standard international program. I'm not trying to uncover any conspiracy or question the wisdom of my instructors, I was just wondering if anyone could give me help on why this is so.
