Some of the unique movements in the form would be difficult to impossible to perform one handed. Dr. Kimm spoke about the correct weapon for the form several seminars back, He or Master Kincade would be better able to comfirm or correct my recollection though. They're definitely related - I'll try to remember to bug him. BTW, Mr. Roena's email address is rcroena@msn.com (I'm pretty sure). Given the addled state of my brain these days, you might have more luck contacting him yourself. ;-) Also BTW, Mr. Roena is, in addition to being a generally phenomenal TKD person, is an excellent salsa dancer. I think he was Colorado state champion a few years back. He's tried to teach me, but alas, I'm hopelessly white. ;-) ;-) I'll settle for being a good TKD student. Also Also BTW, I've seen him (at least once) evade an incoming technique with a little salsa-esque footwork, and then cream his opponent. Maybe I should take the salsa more seriously after all. ;-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr Dave Steffen, Ph.D. Wave after wave will flow with the tide Dept. of Physics And bury the world as it does Colorado State University Tide after tide will flow and recede tkd-physics@comcast.net Leaving life to go on as it was... - Peart / RUSH "The reason that our people suffer in this way.... is that our ancestors failed to rule wisely". -General Choi, Hong Hi --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Dave Steffen Date: Sat, 18 Oct 2003 21:29:01 -0600 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: ITF-KATU Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > From: "Manuel Maldonado" > Date: Tue, 14 Oct 2003 10:28:24 -0700 > > I recieved a disturbing e-mail yesterday from Son U Chol, treasurer > ITF. When he was a toddler, the operation discussed in this article was performed on him, and he speaks beautiful, unaccented English, as well. I do wonder about parents who would even consider submitting their children to any unnecessary surgery, though. This world is strange. Sally --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Jason E. Yeah I agree it is pretty stupid I don't understand some of thease people that claim to be Grand Masters in everything out there. Where do they find the time to study each and every art? I know several folks that study different arts but, it's like more realistic. Black Belt 4th Dan Tae Kwon-Do, Green Belt in Hapkido, or even yellow sash in Kung Fu but to be 7th 8th 9th Degree in every art in the world come on you are kidding right. I myself have studied several arts liked some didn't care for others, but I only have time and money for one Black Belt well two if you count WTF and ITF as two different art forms. Even myself don't consider legit some 0of thease people loke this clown thats traveling around the US "giving" away Black Belts in any art who dose he think he is anyway. We were involved with this association "Young Brothers Tae Kwon-Do" man it was cool and we seemed not to have any problems, politics etc. Well of course I wasn't an instructor or even a Black Belt Back then. Dose anyone on this list remember the Young Bros.? And if so are they still operating today? I found my green belt certificate its sined by Gen. Choi, Benny Rivera and the Brothers. Man I'll cherish that as long as I live. That right there probably means more to me than any other certs. I have earned in the Army or in any other groups I've been in. Judo, Jiu-jutsu (of varying styles supposedly) and Karate. He was a Colonel in the USAF and went to West Point. He is mainy a Judo guy and definitely a legend in the Judo Community. He is legitimately ranked as a 9th Dan through the Kodokan and is only one of a few in the world outside of Japan to hold that rank. He formed the USJA (the original and largest - until recently - Judo organization in North America for 41 years) but was ousted due to "alleged" financial discrepancies. He formed a new organization and, by all appearances (but to be fair, hard to tell) seems to be kind of selling out rank now. Nonetheless, he is a Judo wiz and one of the best there is at that game. But he has no background in KMA. On the other hand anyone who is seriously considering purchasing a weapon of any type including a sword needs to take responsibility for doing their homework, so don't conclude that my comments here are anywhere near the be- all-&-end-all of the subject. For further research consider visiting the Sword Forum International website where you will find more information and achived resources than anybody probably has a right to expect. Here goes. Bugei Trading Company (www.bugei.com). James Williams has built quite reputation on selling swords of particularly high quality to serious sword art practitioners. Most of what is sold are "Paul Chen" swords made by the HANWEI FORGE in the Peoples Republic of China. The swords crop up in a number of places such as Mantis Swords and for about the same price point. What has made Mr. Williams such an icon in this area is his very stringent quality control and long experience in providing the very best for the price point. It is very common, for instance to have essentially the same sword provided by HANWEI Forge to a number of distributors only to find that the furniture, finishing, and performance are uniformly better for James having checked and double-checked the quality before passing it on to his customer. Now, I am not going to say anything about the custom made swords as I think that is a bit more than the average will want to spring for especially from the start. A decent sword, of which there will be many designs and option will run somewhere around $900US, and the quality will make it worth it as will the cusomer service. I am going to skip over Mantis and CAS but you can check them out with a GOOGLE search if you are interested. Both market Paul Chen/HANWEI Forge for a lower price point with, perhaps, not all of the options or quality assurance one might get from Bugei. Nosyniaido (www.nosyniaido.com) "Nos" blades have built a reputation for offering a wide range of swords geared more towards the Iaido and Batto-jutsu practitioners of the Japanese arts. It is very easy to find a simple aluminum alloy blade, less a shapened edge, with which to practice the motorskills of drawing and cutting, as well as performing single-man kata. However the company's fame arises from the range of items, again, depending on the intent of the practitioner. For instance, Nos also offers mild steel blades, both sharpened and unsharpened, the former which will serve not only for kata practice but also for light cutting practice, while the latter provides a closer approximation of the balance one would find in a steel weapon less the danger of cutting oneself in the early stages of training. Nos also offers a limited number of higher end blades, however most who deal with this company are seeking quality "Iai-to" or Iaido practice swords for form work. You're looking at somewhere between $400 to $1000 depending on what sort of sword you want to train with. OK, now the companies I have mentioned focus primarily on the Japanese sword architecture. If a person is considering Korean sword work I recommend Korean sword architecture---- at least later in your training when you decide this is what you want to do, rather than still be making up your mind. In that case here are a couple of recommendations. The ASMKA Pro Shop (www.song-moo-kwan.net) This English language site has just about everything for folks who want to play either the Kumdo or the Kum Bup side of the Korean sword arts. The site has also listed a pretty decent range of swords of Korean architecture. Sehyun Co. (www.sehyun-kumdo.com) A Korean company whose website has a significant English language section for people who want to purchase direct from Korean. I own one of these swords and have had no reason to complain either about its construction or performance. I DO wish that they would not use that glossy gold in their furniture as I prefer a more restrained, more modest approach to sword furniture. All the same I have had no problem at all with my cutting. Kumdo Mall.co.kr (Swordman.com) Completely Korean language site which offers essentially the same swords as Sehyun though with a lesser range. So those are the sites that I would suggest and I will close with one friendly bit of advise. Serious swordwork takes a serious sword. Don't buy a wall-hanger with a 440 Stainless steel blade for $100 and expect satisfactory performance. Stainless, though attractive, is brittle and cannot be expected to hold-up to any sort of reasonable use, and I don't even want to think about how well the blade is attached to the handle on those things. Do yourself a favor and save for a decent blade you can put your trust in. Not a bad fighter either. I'm sorry to hear you went to VA Tech. Being a West Virginian, I guess we'll be eatin' turkey for dinner come this Wednesday night when the Mountaineers spank some Hokie butt in Morgantown!! Thanks for bringing back good memories. James Morgan GTKDA Lewisburg, WV <> Yes, we all brag about our first instructor, but SBN (Charlie) was flawless in his hyung due to his dilegent (relentless) practice of basics and the hyung itself. Our club at VA Tech had two formal classes and three two hour "workouts" every week. While most of us would play around with sparring, Charlie would be drilling basics and running his hyung over and over, then dissecting segments he didn't like until they met with his standards. During formal class he was totally focussed on us gups, but workouts were his time, and the other blackbelts would be on hand to help you with testing material review and/or sparring. Keep in mind he graduated with honors from Hokie High before going to Law school at American U in D.C. I'd guess he won't be cherring for the mountaineers this weekend :-) It's gonna be a shame for yall West-by-god Virginians to get abused on your home field :-) All in good fun :-) Charles R. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
