Apparently the only thing that counts in this guys' mind is one of those king-sized papers from a well-known organization. I was all set to lay out a big defense of school certs, but stories like yours always leave me pause for thought" y'know...even a cert from a well known org can be worthless, depending on who gave it to you. check out: eBay item 3632616009 (Ends Oct-23-03 11:07:30 PDT) - KOREAN INSTRUCTOR OR MASTER CERTIFICATE and even thought this is a simple little sang moo sa certificate, the guy says he's kkw certified. i'm extremely disappointed in stuff like this which can and probably does fool the average tkd mom or dad. occasionally disillusioned, mel Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy www.cjmaa.com 1.573.673.2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply www.cjmas.com 1.877.847.4072 --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Eddie Urbistondo" To: Date: Wed, 22 Oct 2003 13:55:44 -0700 Subject: [The_Dojang] WTF/ITF Leaving instructor Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net "Hi Damian, I fully understand what you are going through, I too am a 2nd Dan WTF instructor, been teaching for 3 years. Something that I had to remember was that in WTF TKD, there are only a couple dozen or so techniques in the whole system, that's it. After we reach BB we go and perfect those techniques till we can do them perfectly and accurately without thinking about them." I don't agree with this statement. I'm in WTF TKD and my curriculum is set to teach my students the art and how to defend themselves. Most people label WTF as a sport and not an art. For example, if you want to learn self defense and you sign up at a school that teaches predominantly sport taekwondo or does not teach you how to use TKD in a combative way then leave it if you are not learning what it is that you want to learn. Many schools just teach forms as something to do for your next rank, they don't teach you the principles of the forms. Many schools don't even teach three step sparring or one step sparring. While it is true that you should master all techniques to the point that they become a spontaneous reaction, if what you are learning is SPORT, what good does it do the practitioner interested in learning an art of self defense. I believe a student should stay with a school if that student is learning what they came to learn. For example, I am not going to require a 40 yr old student to do Olympic sparring if they came to my school for self defense. That student will do sparring to train him to defend himself on the street. If that student wants to become an instructor, then I will teach that student the elements of sport TKD so that student can teach his students that compete. Damian, my advice to you is that if you are a black belt and you do not feel that you are learning what it is that you want to learn then leave and look for a place that will satisfy your martial arts appetite. He has, and continues to invest his time and skill in teaching me, and in return I do what I can to help him at the school and association levels. I also believe in loyalty which gives one the benefit of the doubt and carries through the hard times, which WILL come if one trains for any amount of time. To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I left my first teacher when my family moved from one city to the next. It's strange how the cards were dealt because my first teacher was a Grandmaster and I had the opportunity to study abroad but the thing was I'd have to be away for 5 years, so my mother didn't let me go...I guess at the time those would have been critical years to be away from family. I would have been about 8 when I left and 13+ when I got back. The transition period from Tang Soo Do to Soo Bahk Do was long (probably longer than desired by KJN Hwang Kee) and difficult (for those with lots of experienced years invested in theirs and their students' paths). Many left. Many stayed....." Looks like I made another mistake. I was thinking that we were talking about a single art --- TSD--- of which MDK, SBD and TSD were variations. Reading your last post I got the impression that these are almost separate arts if by politics if nothing else. If we are talking about separate disciplines then it would make sense that I was becoming a bit confused. Could be because we are mixing apples (one discipline) with oranges (a completely different discipline)? I know I was getting confused because I seemed to hear all three disciplines invoke a relationship of one sort or another with Hwang Kee. Thoughts? I was undone from the start though. Is it true that Mr. Wannabee was born in 1967 and that would make him 36 y/o in 2003? Then, WHAT year did he go to Korea? Then WHAT year did he make 6th Dan? In WHAT art? So this guy is a 37 y/o "grandmaster"? On what particular planet? In what particular art. According to whom exactly? Or Is this just giving this wannabe more press than he's worth? However, with a $50 ticket in my possession I am quite interested to see what's going on down there. As I said initially, I could care less about any of it, I'm interested in doing some Hapkido with people and hopefully remembering 3 or 4 things I can use. Too bad you're not going, would be interesting to meet you. I'll let you know how the weekend goes......that is, if you're interested. I've trained with some Great Big Hapkido people (not to be mistaken with any O-Sabumnim's...) and I am interesting as a point of comparison. If nothing else, it should be quite interesting, it's worth the $250 for me I guess.
