However, I think I might contact you off-line because despite my desire to share my experience, my Christian nature is working hard at not hitting too hard against GM Hackworth. I know many of you have had poor personal experiences with him and I am not taking anything away from that but he he was not only very polite to me and apologetic about certain events, but I believe he was blindsided in several ways by Oh Se Lim and his entourage of 5. Many of the things that happened were outside of his control and the "group" from Korea IMHO, were poor-mannered, excuse-making, probably a little racist....Koreans who think their pot is better. Nonetheless, Hackworth had no control over them and they did what they wanted and had their own agenda that had very little to do with training participants and he was taken quite by surprise and lost a fair amount of money on the whole event. The numbers were accurate but I think the first night it was closer to 50. The only person that spent A LOT of time on the mat was the Technical Director of KHF and he was extremely personable and available. Mr. Connolly did indeed show as well as Mr. Carver (Yudo Reps.) and Mr. Carver was on the mat training and was very polite and friendly. Mr. Connolly was with the entourage a fair amount of the time and was present a fair amount of the time but just walked around a lot. He certainly had a lot of historical information he wished to share with people when he got them in small groups. (I'm being very polite now). Vic Cushing showed up and he is indeed an interesting character. I'll say nothing else. I didn't find him insulting or rude but he was polite and friendly and is very opinionated. Mr. Oh did preside over the test that was led by the Technical Director. He didn't say anything just told them what to do. The 1st Dan test consisted of a strike, lock and throw from each body grab (wrist, sleeve, elbow, shoulder, choke, punch, belt, kick, bear-hug and the variations). They viewed kicking, some falling, dive-roll stuff. The 2nd Dan stuff was more of the same but with extra specialty kicking and a few more Hoshinsul techniques. There were 7 people that tested. The rest of us watched. There were a few local people who were exceptional and a few from Canada that were pretty hard-core. The rest were average. Everybody got their KHF Uniform that was promised. The 1st Dan test was only $150 I believe, so not too bad. The first night was free-practice time where everybody partnered up with different people and practiced their own stuff. Oh Se Lim and his group showed up 1.5 hours late and he talked about TanJun breathing for 5 minutes. Honestly his explanation could have been given by my Orange Belts. Then they left a while later. The next day the Technical Director (good guy) did arrest techniques which I could care less about but for some people they probably rather enjoyed it. He spent some time on Dan Bong movement exercises and then a few defense techniques. The following day was the test, once gain with Mr. Oh showing up about 45 minutes to 1 hour late. They showed up almost 2 hours late on Saturday (maybe less) and mentioned something about their clothes and not being dressed for the occasion and then they left and never came back. Apparently, the Mayor of Ocoee who presented Mr. Oh with a key to the city and a plaque of appreciation "insulted" Mr. Oh by asking him if he could speak English. He wanted to thank Mr. Oh himself instead of through an interpreter (an honest mistake for a round-eye) but it was very much taken the wrong way and Mr. Oh thought he was indicating that he was an idiot or something (the rest of the entourage can speak English) and that is one of the explanations about why they didn't come back Saturday. Once again, something out of Hackworth's control and I think he was upset and very disappointed. Mr. Hackworth told me on Sunday that he did go to dinner with Mr. Oh and a few students and he indicated to him that (not in these exact words of course) that he wasn't doing a good job of fostering inclusion of Hapkido people and promoting a brotherhood sort of environment. He indicated he was going to talk with him again later that Sunday. One of the reasons people felt slighted was because before Mr. Oh entered on Friday night, we were all instructed that the people with KHF Uniforms would line up in front of everybody else and everybody was encouraged to have them. This made a few people a little disconcerted. I didn't really care to be recognized so my heavyweight double-weave Judo uniform with the WHA patch was probably not the best to wear. Of course, I wore it the rest of the Seminar anyway. Hey, I only have so many uniforms. There was a mention during the testing, that they wanted to see the individual techniques from each persons own organization and they did not necessarily have to fall in line with the KHF 1st Dan requirements. This was on Sunday. Again, interesting. Mr. Hackworth's National Rep. was indeed present from Tampa for all 3 days. I found Mr. Pointer extremely friendly and laid-back. Well, I found the seminar lacking from a technical standpoint. I would have rather covered a variety of other things but that wasn't my call. I would have rather had those gentlemen from Korea spend more time on the mat, because when they did (10-15 minutes total - except for the Technical Director) it was very insightful. I have no doubt that some of them know their stuff. But Hackworth had no control over these gentlemen and in my opinion wether they were "insulted" or not, I felt a very cold presence from them that probably had more to do with their perception of Americans than anything. Add hotel , meals Yes, I agree with you, it's way too much money. You can train with Dojunim Ji,Han Jae for alot less and he is the one who taught those Masters or at least most of em. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello everyone, I don't post here much, but do read the digest. I don't know anything about Hapkido except for what I have read. This school is not to far from me and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about it. It makes me wonder about someone that is teaching 3 different martial arts. Check out the link and tell me what you think please. http://fisherskarate.com/fbba/index.cfm?page=7 I am currently in Taekwon-Do (USTF) and don't wish to change, just like to check out new things. Hope to one day go to one of Master West's seminars if a Taekwon-do person is allowed. Thank you, Dena Martin --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
