That was a pretty balanced report on the Florida event! One thing that kept coming out over and over again was that these folks, including those visitors from Korea, simply didn't spend much time out on the mat. Maybe I am being a little naive' but I thought that was the whole point of having a seminar. Then, after busting a decent sweat, you head-out and spend some time with like- minded practitioners. BTW: Maybe we can get some of the Canadian water shipped down to Florida! Sounds like those folks on my northern border are my kind of folks! There is also another point that needs not to be glossed over. As much publicity as all of this has generated for the Florida contingent, there are still one-hellava-lot of KHF folks who are hard- driving and dedicated. Seems like they just don't get the press that others do. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if they took time to point up whats going on with their particular groups, ya' know? I'll take the vow of silence this time?.. the one thing I will say about the Sin Moo Seminars with Doju Nim Ji Han Jae is that he is ON the mat the whole time demonstrating EVERYTHING! I mean lets face it, he could be a figure head if he wanted to be but he seems to be a teacher first, and the other stuff after... IMHO if you are going to a seminar to learn "techniques" first and foremost then you can't beat his stuff... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Jack writes that "stocky" seems to be the norm down here in Florida!! Hey man come on!! ha ha ha,, I mean I am a long way from being a Jenny Craig poster boy but a lot of us down here do actually work out, we just don't give seminars on advanced ki power techniques to others when we can't fix ourselves first!!! No amount of money, advanced belts, buying of organizations etc... will substitute for good ole hard workouts that build your willpower and personality in the right direction. I have all 5 of GM Shin's books. The 5th book is an insturctors manual which I just purchased and have not started to read yet. Charles Richards wrote: Dear Bruce and Danny, I agree with Danny's post and would add. KJN Hwang and the other founding kwans where members of the Korean Subakdo Association until the guberment decided to take control of Dan certification. End result half of the MDK and all but the CDK left. Put the puzzle together in my mind 1. GM Hwang was an inovator and ecclectic martial artist from day one 2. Had an opportunity through the railroad to train with Sifu Yang 3. At the end of the occupation he wanted to make his kwan Korean Nationalist thus the Hwa Soo Do (and later Hwa Sun Hyung). 4. His autobio says he learned the Karate Katas from a book which could at that time most likely be Funakoshi's Book. 5. I understand that the founders would sit on each others gradings, so yes I'd say they were contemporaries. 6. I'll take a SWAG that Hwang "learned" the Sho Rin Ryu Kata from Funakoshi's book and then had his friend/associate provide some qualified corrections from someone who trained with the author of the book. 7. As he evolved from HSD to TSD, he also modified the TSD forms to suit the needs of his "instructor preference" and the needs of his client base. 8. Much like a "cover band" once he made his version of TSD an international success, he had a desire to return to what he felt was a Korean base shown in the MYDTJ and blend his past with his first formal Sifu. Enter the Chil Sung & Yuk Rho sets, and from what I understand, exit some of the Pyung Ahns. Second Issue, KJN Shin's books are well written and organized. You will need close to $200 if you are a non WTSDA member to get a complete picture as the Kibon and Gup level Kata are in one book, and the two man forms and self defense in another book and the fourth book which I haven't seen yet has the yudanja hyung, but not the kodanja hyung. I believe only up to 4th Dan Kong Sang Koon is included. So for those that don't practice TSD, or are from another splinter other than Shin's the $20 paperpack from Amazon provides more value. If you are in the Shin, Jae Chul system, or one of the splinters from WTSDA then you should have all four books by Shin, JC. Anybody have Shin's 4 books C.S. Kim's book(s) Ho Sik Pak's tapes Kang Uk Lee's book and Hwang, Kee's book(s) care to do a compare and contrast book report? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Jeff Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The Shinsei Hapkido Crew had to leave early. I would agree will all of the statements made by Jeff. Oh Se Lim does speak english. I spoke to him in Korean at Denny's, and he responded in English. I think he jsut didn't WANT to speak english. The Ki explanation lost a bit in translation from Oh to Bae, but I would agree, I expect a similar explaination of Dan Jun Ho Hop and Ki on my students first belt test. I did get to present Oh, Se Lim a book, and verify he had indeed recognized the Shinsei Kwan, from him personally. I found Hackworth to be most gracious, and Pointer to be quite nice as well. Enjoyed meeting Vic Cushing, who thought as much of sitting on the mat for an hour as I did, and Ed Annabale (Hope that is spelled right). the price of the seminar could have purchased alot of needed equipment for my class, that I teach for free due to the poverty of the area. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Did this happen? Also, it was said that there would be announcements of fraudulent instructors in the KHF, was this announced? What was the big news that was going to bring joy to some and cause others to "slit their wrists" as it was told. With respect, Jeremy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? If they were poor-mannered it was probably because of all the direct feedback they have received about his lackluster performance, the the lies he has told and the way he has disrespected his seniors in the art of Hapkido. It is a shame that so many had to waste their hard earned $$ to see this in person, but I guess we should not be surprised. "Do you know what martial means? It means relating to mars, the god of war. A martial art is an art of war. UFC and other such competitions competitions are only incidentally related to the martial arts, because they follow a dueling system. A duelist and a warrior are totally different beasts, different ideals, different techniques. The game form of capoeira certainly has some dueling aspects to it, but the art as a whole is not a generalized form of dueling. So you won't see capoeiristas in UFC, because we simply aren't duelists of that sort. We play a different game that relates to the warrior arts in our own particular way. Chess is a martial art. UFC is like armwrestling, it's just a contest. That's how I'd answer your friend." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
