I would also be the first to say that TKDT could be a lot better if folks would consider writing articles for the mag that did more than showcase a particular personality or KMA. I have heard tell that there is a magazine floating around which is directed exclusively towards TKD &/or TSD folks but its always turned up somewhere else, if you know what I mean. Friend of a friend knew somebody who saw one once. For my money JOURNAL OF ASIAN MARTIAL ARTS is still the top of the heap but its getting harder and harder to find in the stores. CLASSICAL FIGHTING ARTS (the new incarnation of DRAGON TIMES) is likewise getting rare but to their credit they see to have broadened their coverage a bit with occasional Korean MA and Chinese MA material. Personally I wouldn't mind if people who know about similar pubs from other countries would share the wealth. Just because a magazine isn't in English doesn't mean we have to ignore it entirely. Maybe intrest from English speaking countries will encourage a bi-ligual edition. I think thats how we got AIKIDO JOURNAL. FWIW. Would it be possible to get the KHF to recognize another US organization? If so, why aren't the black belts who are upset with NHA and Hackworth purue the avenue? Just a thought. UFC is like armwrestling, it's just a contest......" I have had this bee buzzing around in my bonnet for a few weeks now as I listen to the various discussions. Are we practitioners of KMA actually practicing a martial art? Yes, I know. It sounds like a dumb question but consider the facts. a.) TKD and TSD are related not to an art praticed by the military in Korea but a common street game practiced by the common population as a substitute for Soo Bahk whose competitions were outlawed in the 14th century. In fact, nobody really knows what Soo Bahk actually looked like anymore than we know what the swordwork of the HwaRang warriors looked like --- though we know they DID use swords. b.) Hapkido arts derive from the inter-relating of various amounts of Japanese, Chinese and Korean material. Despite what stories people tell about Daito-ryu, the art as we know it today is a relatively recent construction. And as far as the Chinese material goes, that which has been incorporated into what is practiced on a daily basis is nothing like what was practiced by the Chinese military and seems more heavily influenced by practice by the common people. And if you don't like the Korean traditions one day, just wait a week and somebody will come up with a whole closet full of new traditions which had been secreted away on the side of a No. Korean mountain for a millenia. c.) In a recent discussion we discussed the use of hyung/kata which had been developed in Okinawa and as far as I can tell there are only a few key people in those Okinawan traditions who ever had any relationship to some military or para-military position. And even those traditions of that island owe their roots not to military heritage but to various civilian sources in Southern China. Somebody made a comment once about how old MA mythes just seem to hang on and on. I wonder if thats because there is some small kernal of truth in them or are we just to disconcerted to accept that saying we practice a "martial art", while maybe what we WANT to believe, is not, in fact what we are really doing. Thoughts? Was it? Any of it other than the arresting techniques already reported here? "Learn the realities of defenses against empty hand and weapons (stick, knife, gun) attacks. Grand Master Oh Se Lim, the President of the Korea Hapkido Federation will discuss and demonstrate traditional Korean Hapkido skills to defend against empty hand & weapon attacks and cover Dan Rank Promotion Requirement techniques. There will also be training on Ki development, Poboksool (belt & rope), dan bong, cane, sword, pressure point attacks and Police escorting techniques and much more. This event is sanctioned by the National Hapkido Association and the Korea Hapkido Federation." Thanks for the info from people who were there. Now that I'm back home for a while after several weeks on the road, I have a few posts I'd like to make about Hapkido. Will do so shortly. And when you get through...do some squats. Seriously, the squat from power lifting, and the Olympic style lifts are one of the most efficient means to develop leaping ability. Genetic considerations aside, jumping is about leg strength and proper motor recruitment. What you do once you're up there is a product of hang time, and motor skill. Many studies have shown that Olympic style lifters have vertical leaps that put many high jumpers to shame. Olympic lifting not only increases the lower body strength, but also facilitates development of explosive total body motor recruitment that bleeds over into just about any gross motor athletic skill (running, jumping, throwing, etc.) The drawback is that these lifts are very technical, and should be learned (ideally) under the supervision of an experienced coach (although there are some good video resources out there). The squat from power lifting is much more accessible, and will most definitely enhance both leg strength and hip extension. The deadlift is also a good developer of both of these attributes. If weights are not an option, then I always felt that jump squats added a little something to my vert when I was heavy into doing those. Also, remember that jumping is at the extreme range of anaerobic activity...it's all about fast twitch muscle fiber. So, if you're doing any kind of distance walking or running, this will absolutely kill your ability to maximize your jumping. My advice, if you are not lifting then start lifting...particularly the ones I mentioned. If you are doing extended steady state conditioning (running, walking, etc.) and don't want to give up the benefits from that, then look into switching over to interval training for your cardio work in addition to your lifting. Contrary to popular myth, you can have a good balance between explosiveness and endurance (it's not the "either/or" proposition except at the elite levels), you just have to be smart about going about it. Plyometrics is also a consideration, but most academics stress that this should be avoided until respectable base line strength levels have been established. I believe a ratio of 1.5 bodyweight on the bench press, and 2.0 on the squat...if I'm not mistaken.
