Great content as usual, we did lots of Bong work, combination joint locks and throws. Dr. Kimm was amazing as usual, he has such efficency of motion...Not a movement wasted. I learn something new that I missed on the basic techniques every time I see him demonstrate. Just wanted to let everyone know what they had missed. I wish you a speedy recovery Mr.Terry. Good night all I'm going to take some pain medication(I became intimately aquainted with Do Ju Nim's mats again today) and get some rest for the 11/2-2 hr. drive tommorrow. Glad to see things laid-out so clearly. I also noted that there is no use of "grandmaster" and "master". However since there will be no turning American culture back from its current direction I am suggesting "Exalted High Imperial Wizard" for those among us who have promoted at least one grandmaster to supreme grandmaster and/or hold a minimum of 13th through 17th dan BB. I know these requirments are a bit stringent, but after all we DO have to keep our standards, yes? :-) Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "owll" To: Subject: re: Subject: [The_Dojang] Weapons and Hand-to-Hand. The closed hand is devoid of sense and a pure force made to go through. The open hand is receptive to the flow of energy that moves around it, towards it, through it. Thereby enabling it to be much more stealthy and use only just enough of it's own energy to meet and pass, destroy or accept and dissipate the negativity it comes into proximity with. The forward phalanx will crush through the defense yes, using much more firepower and resources to accomplish it's task. The hassasin will note the breaches in security and slip through to target the source of the hydras' power and swiftly take down the beast. I trust that the eclectic nature of my metaphors will define the total views I have of things seen and unseen. By contrast though I train to defend in a single move I know the Arts are intended to heal and thus am closer to the metaphysics of its teachings. I send soulful greetings to the great masters out there, some of whom I have met and hold in high regards. I look forward to observing more wisdom. Why were these views not heard of before Master Choi passed? Why does GM JI never acknowledge the one who gave him financial support when he came to the states? >> These "claims" as you call it, was common knowledge in the Hapkido community. There was no need to make any claims, since everyone knew the truth. However, when GM Ji moved to the US in 1984, he discovered that many of his senior students had untruthfully told the American public that they had learned directed from GM CHOI Yong Sul. The basis for this was photographs taken when GM Choi visited GM Ji's dojang in Seoul in the early 1960's. The students of GM Ji felt that it was "better" if they claimed to learn directly from GM Choi, since in many cases they were older than GM Ji. Six months or so after GM Ji arrived in the United States, he went to Los Angeles to do an interview and cover story with Black Belt magazine. At that time, seven of his students (including many who had told the world they were students of GM Choi) got together and begged GM Ji not to tell the truth about who their real teacher was. It was during this time that those instructors gave him "financial support", in the hopes that he wouldn't say anything. And if you read the article, you will see that GM Ji kept their dirty secret a secret. GM Ji arrived in the United States in 1984, and GM Choi passed away in 1986. In fact, I was the one who told GM Ji that GM Choi had died. I can understand how from your perspective that the "claims" of GM Ji arose after the death of GM Choi. However, just because events are chronological doesn't necessarily mean that they are causative. The real question you should be asking yourself is why did your instructor feel the need to disrespect GM Ji by not acknowledging him as his real instructor __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? It takes considerable practice to turn this movement into an advantage, but eventually everyone "gets it", and I get to vicariously enjoy one of those precious "the light just went on" moments with a student. I love that. And I've found this particular technique tends to trigger one of those in nearly every student at some point between greenbelt and redbelt. Anyone else learn/teach that way? Greeting Greg, I punch like Jye :-) Somewhere around mid gup level I start sharing that concept. It's just too much to think about for White-Yellow Belts, neh? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Yesterday I went to Camarillo, CA to Judge a Black Belt test. I left my house around 8:30 AM and arrived around 10:00 AM. I had breakfast with Urbistondo Kwan Jang Nim, then we went to the Do-Jang. When we arrived his place was open. He offers several other styles besides Takewon-do. One instructor who caught my attention was the Hap Ki Do instructor. I never before paid any attention to Hap Ki Do. But as my kids would say "thats slammin". I assure you it was. I watched from a distance for a while and then I got on the mat for a closer look. I thought to myself, with no offense to my Tae Kwon-Do brothers that Hap Ki Do is more practicle for a street confrontation than Tae Kwon-Do. I like Hap Ki Do. My hat is off to all of you fine people that have dedicated your lives to this art. I may sign up for some lessons. Again thank you for allowing me to post. It is no secret that several Korean masters went together to help finance Gm Ji's Hapkido dojang in Daly City, CA. It was a fairly small place, but the price was right...
