But I am concerned with the way he gives dan ranking away and > promoted himself to 10th dan. Actually he was promoted to 10th Dan by, I think, the IHF. I'd have to check on the exact org, (it may have been the Saemaul HKD Assoc) but it is incorrect to say that he promoted himself to 10th. I've seen that cert as well as others in his office. FWIW, I believe he accepted the 10th Dan promo after one (several?) of his former HKD students claimed to be 10th Dans. !!! As for giving away rank... he promotes those he believes deserve a particular rank. Primarily to those that are running a dojang and actively teaching the art. To the best of my knowledge, he doesn't give rank to those he has never seen or taught or seen perform, unlike some wannabe's down Florida way. From what I understand he carries one with him, just incase a learning opportunity presents itself. The article discusses how Taekwondo helped Master Thomas heal two chronic illnesses (diabetes and a respiratory illness). The article is well written and I admire Master Thomas for sharing such personal health history with the martial arts community. His story is an inspiration for all. I recommend giving the article a read if you get a chance!
