He wrote: >Well, if you're still a blue belt after 8 years, then that's your fault. My reply: Hm. I don't think so. I've been paying attention to the BJJ guys since the early 90s, and I've seen where it has taken people. If you're not Brazilian and you are not a Gracie, you don't move through the ranks at the same speed. I didn't train with them from the start because it was expensive and I could get it elsewhere (or I could just wait until a bunch of people produced similar products). Craig adds: >Hey, don't fault the Brazilians for moving people through the belts slow...better than what some of the Koreans are doing. My reply: But you see, Craig, I don't train with the Koreans. :) What's the old saying? Two wrongs don't make a right? There were some other comments downplaying the effectiveness of training with judoka and wrestlers, so let's go there. When I trained with the judoka, they charged $20 per year. That's not half bad, considering they were 3rd & 4th dans. And judo is filled with people who are very talented. If you're talking ground work, what about Willie Cahill? I think people are missing out on a bargain because of Gracie marketing. The other thing they are missing out on, IMO, is the fine attitude of those senior judoka. I did my Ph.D. dissertation on the history of judo and bareknuckle boxing, and as part of that I went to the senior judo nationals and interviewed every person I could find in a referee's jacket and with grey hair. They were an amazingly generous and courteous crowd! I would never have imagined I would be able to talk with guys like Eichi Koiwai! Very cool! As for the wrestlers, one of my hapkido students was a guy who wrestled for about 20 years and coached it as well. It took him about an hour to show all the suplex variations he knew. Very cool! Very painful for my other student, who took all those falls! :) We worked together for about a year. The charge? Nothing. Again, not a bad deal! Mark Daley wrote: I actually trained in Japanese Judo and Jiujitsu for 8 years before training with the Graices. I thought exactly the same as you are saying Mr. Burdick. I felt that the techniques I was learning and the training I had would allow me to hang with anyone of them on the mat.....that is...until i got on the mat with one of thier Blue Belts. I felt that they were just great marketers and business men and it was just a gimmick. My reply: Actually, I don't think you realize what I'm saying. I don't think the Gracies are just great marketers. I think they have a lot of talent and a great family art. They have an irritating skill at getting to a choke position. I do, however, think that BJJ fanboys are just as bad as the TKD nuts that think that one tool will solve all their problems. And yes, that applies to wrestlers who don't cross train too. That buddy of mine who wrestled 20 years whipped me solid until I figured out he was a sucker for a single arm wing lock. Nice to know that something worked (at least until he got used to it!). "Teaching in China" wrote: >I have a question that is bothering me about martial arts. As we get older does the body get weaker? What I mean is that the jumping, kicking, and punching take a toll on individuals in their late 30's, 40's, and over? My reply: You better believe it pal! Especially wushu stuff. Study the internal styles while you are over there (taijiquan, baguazhang, xingyiquan) but remember that a lot of the traditional gongfu disappeared after the Communist revolution (I'm assuming you're in the PRC). So take your training with a grain of salt. There's a qinna instructor of the police in Beijing that I would love to train with, but his name escapes me. He has a book out. I have a copy of the first English Kuk Sool Hapkido Reference Manual written by Dr. Kimm. This was in the early 70's. FYI, speaking of age and rank, Kuk Sa Nim Suh In Hyuk was only 34 years old and 9th dan. Ian A. Cyrus No, the AHA was formed 6 years before the advent of of KSW in the USA, and about 8 - 10 years prior to Dr. Kimm's changing from HapKiDo to KSW. As stated before, Dr. Kimm and Mr. Park (who never embraced KSW) were MuSulKwan guys. I believe the book you are referring to was the one that was made available to the students of the "Four year Kuk Sool Intsructors Seminars" that were held in New Orleans and Baton Rouge to build an instructor base for Mr. Suh. As far as KukSahNim's claims and time-line go, I believe he was born in 1937, but according to KSW lore, he began to gather techniques immediately at the end of the Japanese occupation (1945) and became the head of the system in 1957......you do the math! My relationship with Mr. Suh is non existant, other than a few clashes over the last 25 years....... J. R. It was not widespread knowledge at the time that Grandmaster Choi was here. I remember with clarity the call that came in from Doju Chang Chinil to my husband requesting his presence in New York. A lot took place that day that has never been put in writing but now appears in the book we are writing about my husband and all of his hapkido knowldge and the history of hapkido. Does anyone here know the real truth about the video tape hat was translated by Joe Sheya and printed by him. Read the book and you will know. Documents don't lie. Itruly enjoy reading all the info that is put forward on the digest. At this time Choi Yong Sool designated Chin Il Chang the position of DoJu Nim.
