It seems not. Once Gm Ji left Korea (~1982?) he did not return there until 1999, as I recall... The only person??? The HwaRangDo people claim that Joo Bang Lee was the first to use that title, in the 60s. As I understand it the KHF only recognizes one DoJu, Gm Choi. Dr. Kimm uses that title for Hanmudo and Gm Ji uses that title for Hapkido. And others, too, it seems. Did GM Ji begin teaching in Seoul, was he using the name HapKiDo at that time, or had he not keyed that phrase yet? If not what did he call his art? What other instructors did GM Ji have, or was his art solely based on what he learned for Choi Yong Sool? In there somewhere. > Did GM Ji begin teaching in Seoul, was he using the name HapKiDo at that > time, or had he not keyed that phrase yet? If not what did he call his art? Not sure. I think he first taught Yoo Kwan Sool, from Gm Choi's art. Circa 1959 he liked the "Do" that was being used in Tang Soo Do and Kong Soo Do and Tae Soo Do and decided to use Hap Ki Do. > What other instructors did GM Ji have, or was his art solely based on what > he learned for Choi Yong Sool? He studied long & short bong, Taekkyon and meditation from "Taoist Lee". He also credits a female monk only known as "Grandma" with teaching him "spiritual power" for ~5 years. He was also friends with a boxing coach from whom he rented a room. This is probably where the boxing defense comes from.
