When I perform a reverse punch, I start the hip motion by driving the back heel into the ground turning the hip and releasing the punch. I thought it was an extremely good representation of proper reverse punching technique providing a visual queue. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Good Sir: I well understand the inhibitions one might have about instep roundhouse kicks as it HURTS sometimes. I used to feel the same way until I saw a demonstration by Master Richard Byrne several years ago in which he broke 13 boards with no spacers employing an instep roundhouse kick. No fuss, no muss, no cheap trick, just a heck of a break. I thought it might a a trick until I saw the same demonstration by the same man at another tournament. May I suggest his book on breaking,THE ART OF BREAKING by Master Richard Byrne? After the kick is executed you reverse the steps retaining your balance. A poorly executed roundhouse is when you start the kick from the floor and swing your foot into the target from the outside. When the target is removed you lose balance and leave yourself vulnerable." Thank you - that's the way I learned it, too, the round kick has a definitive stopping point, with or without a target. The "chambering" position would have the knee pointing toward the intended target (just as Master Timmerman detailed). I might suggest slightly past center, but we are at least in the same ball park! In fact, the whole idea of controlling your kick is to allow for additional techniques to follow/flow from that one: round kick/hook kick, round kick/front kick, repeat round kick (two or more round kicks in succession - each thrown from the "chambered" round kick position)........I don't think I have ever taught to put so much into one single technique that you are left off-balance, and out of position if it didn't "land". I am still convinced the foot needs to be perpendicular to the leg while performing the ball of the foot round kick! Mark...Attempting to answer your questions...Mr. Timmerman made some very excellent points on Round House Execution...in your words...I suppose you could call a round house a sideways front kick...however if you watch the execution of a "Proper" Round House...you will note the knee lifts to the outside of the body...just as Mr. Timmerman's Dog Analogy...pivoting on the ball of the supporting foot the hips turn towards the target with the knee aimed at the target...the hips and upper leg move as one, not individually...the lower leg is then extended in the natural motion using the knee as the hinge...the foot pointed down...the toes pulled back...the ball of the foot should be in a straight line with the hips and shoulders upon contact...this will deliver maximum force and power while significantly limiting any impact to the kicker's body... Top of the foot is very fragile...as is the ankle joint...breaking or striking with it may not cause immediate damage or problems...but I guarantee it will in later years...consider it a hinge with a spring and constantly smacking one side of the hinge with a hammer against the force of the spring...forcing the spring to stretch to beyond its natural limit...the same thing happens when using the top of the foot...I AM NOT SAYING NOT TO USE THE TOP OF THE FOOT... just trying to explain the differences and proper execution of a Round House... The Speed style of round house used in Olympic style sparring is designed for one thing..."SPEED"...a person can achieve significant power with this kick as well but not as much as can be achieved with the properly executed round house...the one primary drawback of the Speed Kick is the stress it puts on the hip joints...as the hips take most of the resulting impact and the muscles are bound and twisted together as opposed to their natural conformity...Many of the Olympic style competitors have hip and joint problems as a result...some of them are very young and in later years will be facing hip replacements as some of the older competitors have already realized... Should the target move when executing a Proper Round House...you simple stop the motion by stop the rotation of your hips and your pivoting... A reverse side kick is a natural follow up for a missed round house... It is true that when executing a spinning heel...and striking with the heel it creates a shear force across the ankle...the difference between this shear force and the top of the foot shear force is the direction of the force across the hinged joint (the ankle) and the fact that the force is also distributed through the bones of the foot in the direction of the toes as they are inline with the impact...the heel is also a natural pad for obvious reasons which helps absorb some of the impact...the muscle structure and the method n which they wrap and tie into the ankle and heel on the back side also helps distribute the impact through the muscles of the leg...the resulting impact to the kickers body is far less than that of the impact to the top of the foot... Ok... Long Novel... Hope that helps clear up something ... Pil Seung... And you have to run a Dojang (school) and register your Dojang to the KHF in your name. If you have more than one Dojang, you have to register each Dojang. Only for the registered Dojang the KHF Membership Certificate is issued. Students registered there are automatically regarded as the KHF students. And only they are possible to get the KHF Dan. Students holding the KHF Dan Certificate are regarded as KHF members. For Dojang registration, the KHF charges the amount of 5/100GNP of the country where the Dojang located (max. 500 US$ and min. 100 US$) without exception. But for Dojangs (schools) outside of Korea, the KHF gets free registration by the March 2004. 2. Master's certificate and Seminar In the KHF, to be a legitimate master one has to be higher than the 4th Dan rank of the KHF. And to promote to the 4th Dan or higher, one has to complete the KHF Master's Seminar Course. Only for masters who have completed this course, Master's Certificate is issued, no matter how high Dan they hold. Masters from other organizations have to transfer their Dan certificates to those of the KHF. For that process, The KHF ask them to complete the KHF Master's Seminar Course or to submit a written promise for joining the next master's seminar. The master's seminar is held regularly in the last week of the April every year. For masters who need the certificate right now to open their own Dojang(school), the KHF ask them to register their Dojang and to submit a written promise for joining the next master's seminar and the fee which is 200 US$. Then the KHF issues them the membership certificate. Not only the regular seminar, The KHF will open special sessions, if there are needs. 3. Dan Rank and Certificate, Dan Test and Transfer The KHF has the Dan(Black Belt) ranking table as the below. In the KHF, to promote to the next Dan ranking, one has to fulfill some requirements, not only the ability in Hapkido, but also the training terms and the age. Please refer to this table for your Dan test and training. (Dan level) (Min. terms of training) (Min. Age) (Begin 1 Dan) ( 1 yr. ) - (1 Dan 2 Dan) ( 1 yr. ) - (2 Dan 3 Dan) ( 2 yrs. ) ( 17 yrs. old ) (3 Dan 4 Dan) ( 3 yrs. ) ( 23 yrs. old ) (4 Dan 5 Dan) ( 4 yrs. ) ( 30 yrs. old ) (5 Dan 6 Dan) ( 5 yrs. ) ( 35 yrs. old ) (6 Dan 7 Dan) ( 5 yrs. ) ( 41 yrs. old ) (7 Dan 8 Dan) ( 5 yrs. ) ( 46 yrs. old ) (8 Dan 9 Dan) ( 5 yrs. ) ( 51 yrs. old ) Only the KHF Dan Rank Exam. Committee have the right to test students for Dan. All legitimate masters have the right to apply to the Dan test for their students. Students can not apply to the Dan test indivisually. After test, Dan certificates are issued and sent to the masters. One who holds Dan not of the KHF has to transfer to the appropriate KHF Dan rank. The Dan Transfer is not processed automatically. One has to submit the one's Hapkido training history with Dan certificates or a copy. The KHF Dan Rank Exam. Committee will assess the Dan transferring application and will decide the approprate Dan rank. Masters from other organizations have to transfer their Dan certificates to those of the KHF first, and then they can apply to Dan transferring for their students. Students can not apply to the Dan transfer indivisually. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! For what it is worth I support Hal for consideration as the US rep owing to his rank, long service to the Hapkido community and dedication to the cause of furthering Hapkido despite considerable obstacles thrown in his path. I have sent my letter to Mr. Bae, for what it may be worth, and hope that Hal feels comfortable enough to rely on me for whatever service I might be able to provide. I was also pained to read that the Korea Kido Association has withdrawn into itself and is not expected to return to public function much before 2006. They have become a kind of "good news/bad news" situation, haven't they? The good news seems to be that they are seeking to reinforce a high level of quality and accountability. The bad news is that they may well decide that extending the fruits of their efforts to anyone outside of Korea is more trouble than its worth. At least there are still venues for relating to them. I don't think we could ask for better integrity than is represented by JR, Rudy or Dr. Kimm. In the meantime, the World Kido people have been likewise very quiet. Thier website is still under reorganization and I wonder, personally, if the events with the KHF have had any influence on how the WKF plans to conduct itself in the near future. FWIW.
