I've been following the thread and I decided to reply after reading yours because you could relate to my frame of reference. The show did not live up to its hype. But it was entertaining. I too wish more science had been discussed. However Mike Chat is awesome, he could do whatever martial art he picked if he wanted too. Matt Mullins is very impressive as well. I don't follow sport karate so I wasn't familiar with his name but he has good basics skills from what I could tell. If Tim Schotz decided to get into xma he would be great, as would Fred Kees, and Chief Master Jamie Serio. I think judging someone's martial arts skills based on what they present at sport karate tournament is very difficult. You and I know that Tim, Fred, and Chief Master Serio are great martial artists, but would someone at a sport tourney know this.(Supposing this was their thing.) You were awesome at your last test but as much as I hate to admit it we are getting a little old to be learning flips and backhand springs etc. This doesn't mean that I wouldn't like to be able to. Finally, I didn't get this impression from your post but I did from some of the others. Some of the replys seem to indicate that people are threatened by xma or sport karate. I think Dr. Kimm's demonstrations are much more awesome than anything I've ever seen tv or elsewhere. But I imagine that they are intimidating to those unfamiliar with martial arts. He wields a rope/belt like no one I've seen but some of the techniques look like he's going to seriously injure/kill his partner. We know better but I know that the throws and falls scare off a lot of people. I guess my last point is that these guys could do anything that they wanted to, so I think they deserve some respect for that. Also I would love to be able to land a 540-720-back hand sprind w/o a spotter. Sorry for the long rant. Hope to see you in B.R. next month Chris! Is our friend in Florida even a legitimate 6th Dan? Or was he promoted to 6th Dan by the KHF in appreciation of his past commercial activities, or in anticipation of his future commercial activities, on behalf of the KHF? Judging from the KHF's response to this issue, they appear to be surprised that a senior member has been acting in a less-than-exemplary manner. But hasn't the KFH been very involved with this individual and his organization? Was he not appointed as the senior KHF rep in the US? If not, why did the KHF allow him to aggressively promote himself as such for a very long time, to the point of challenging and attacking other senior KHF members? I think it would be good if the KHF did more than just express regret for this individual's activities. I believe they have to take some responsibility (if not financially) and reassure members they will take steps to ensure this doesn't happen again. Feel free, Ray, to forward this along to any senior KHF members interested in our input. I think although it looked like it was made with a home camcorder, 'The Martial Arts World' which still seals videos (espy-tv) was a great idea. For those who have never seen it or that lived outside of NYC, NJ, CT, it was a show featuring Martial arts demonstrations, a segment on videos (instructional and entertainment), a segment on a teacher and their school along with their techniques. It was great and informative as well. I think we need to have something like that back again. Touching on topics like martial arts after 40, martial arts for children, movie and book reviews, and all kinds of other things. So someone with connects on this list...hop to it. Unfortunately my project at the CNN center is up...besides, I was on the elevator with Ted Turner and had no idea who he was until after the fact so my chances are gone...lol. If not, why did the KHF allow him to aggressively promote himself as such for a very long time, to the point of challenging and attacking other senior KHF members?" First, no, the KHF did not supervise the actions of the person in question. He was allowed to act freely on his own accord to promote the KHF in whatever way he saw fit. In many ways he did promote Hapkido and KHF well. It was other actions and misconduct that have lhave caused these problems. Second, he was never appointed as the US representative. In fact, there have only been three representatives appointed (France, Malaysia, and Singapore), and the decision for the US rep has yet to be finalized. When the decision has been made it will be announced on the KHF web site. Your final point about why he's been allowed to attack senior KHF members is false. He has never done so until recently, or at least that's what the rumor mill has been spreading over the last couple days. I am not defending him, but rather not giving in to every rumor I've heard. If it is true, than the KHF will take whatever decisions they deem necessary. One more thing: The Korean way to problem solve is very, VERY different than the way the western approach. Koreans tend to take time to see if the problems works itself out. However, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the KHF is considering what actions to take now. In fact, I will be advising them to take immediate action. One other note: please do not hold the KHF responsible for one person's actions. It should be obvious that the KHF has not been helped by what he has done. Additionally, we do not have the manpower or funds to micro-manage all the masters in Korea and abroad. It was not even until recently that the KHF has taken a look at expanding globally. The lessons learned here will greatly help us implement procedures and policies to prevent this type of embarrassment. And finally, he is a legitimate 6th dan. His name was listed by Master Bae on the KHF web site along with the other foreign KHF masters (4th dan and higher). John A. I was bored and disappointed so I didn't even bother with the second hour. If I had taped it, I could FF through it like someone wrote earlier. I was excited a few months ago, even disappointed when Grandmaster told me to wait. Now that I have permission I do not feel excited about it. Now, it seems it is going to be harder, and more difficult since I am close to black belt. (after brown belt of course). I practice 3x weekly and on my own, but for some reason, I have lost confidence. Does anyone feel a little scared when it comes to advancing to the next level? Am I just being silly? Actually he has attacked his HKD seniors as well as his KHF US seniors for a rather long time now (a year or more). Nothing recent about it. His claim was always that he was their senior (since he was a 9th Dan Grandmaster) and that they had better pay proper respect to him or they'd be in big trouble. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I just recently joined a new Taekwondo school in my area. This school is a franchise...has other schools just like all over the U.S. It is not a bad school. I am just concerned about the price and whether it is a "cookie cutter" school or a genuine TKD school. I notice that they only use sparring gear by Macho only. If you don't have the  Macho sparring gear, then you have to purchase it.You cannot use gear that you already have that is not by Macho.(The whole set is $150 for females and $161 for males.) You also have to buy a re- breakable board ($42) and manuals in order to study and turn in a short written exam before testing ($30). Buying video tapes to practice forms are optional. Each student must have his/her own kicking pad ($20). His black belt students are ok. they can spar pretty good. I am just checking the school out, but I need some opinions about this b/c I have a strong desire to learn but I am short on money. I have sparring gear already (not made by Macho).I have spent a few years at another TKD school learning forms without a manuel and I am use to breaking real boards and you can either purchase your own sparring gear or use the gear provided by the school. Is this new TKD school worth it compared to the school I use to go to for training? The instructor is nice. He does his job very well. He has shown me some techniques, but I don't feel his strong desire/spirit towards TKD. I have been at the school for a short time. He does not know me very well. So maybe-I should give it some more time before making a decision as to whether or not I should sign a contract with him.  Is it natural for students to feel an instructor's desire and love for the martial arts? Hello George: Thank you for understanding my concerns. As you say, you yourself have some permanent damage. Too bad you and I did not have the benefit of having a concerned Instructor to insist on keeping us from harming ourselves permanently. Over time, I have seen numerous martial arts Instructors ignore the fact that the bones and other organs of young people do not fully develop until around the end of puberty (late teens). In my schools, I don't even allow young folks to do knuckle push ups for that reason. Repeated impact on the growing plates of the long bones may permanently damage the bones and/or the normal growing process. IMHO, self defense is not just about defending yourself against some thugs, effective self-defense should take into consideration "anything" that may cause damage to your body or mental health.
