Hello Bruce: From what has been said, I for one can't say for sure what has happened between these orgs. Until I do, I will not make assumptions that might or might not be true. I do not believe that GM Seo will suddenly change what he has been teaching for centuries because of this split, and I am confident he will continue to teach good Korean martial arts. I for one will hopefully be able to glean more of his knowledge regardless of what he represents; in fact, I am going to Korea this April to do just that, and you can be sure I won't waste my time by trying to find out what happened between orgs... I really could care less. All I want is to learn and/or have my students learn, and I always support those who are willing to teach me or my students. It is the way:) Like Dave said in his post. Once a certificate has been bestowed on me by someone whom I care about (I won't bother to go to anyone I don't care about), that is enough for me. I could care less who recognizes my certificates. I see them as a token of appreciation for the many hours of studying that go into teaching/learning the required material to earn a certificate. The rest of the world I will have to convince by doing the right things on and off the mat, and even though I am not always successful, I really try to do just that... the right thing. I don't think for a minute that anyone will care about my certificates when they pay me to teach them. If they do, I will inform them of their errand ways. In fact, I always make sure folks have a better understanding about what it is they should be paying me (or anyone else) for. IMHO, educating folks about training and certification goes a long way to earning their trust. Most of my certificates are tucked away in a briefcase and never see the light of day. They are for me to appreciate, and not for me to bamboozle an unsuspecting newcomer with. Like you, I too have been burned by an org. I worked hard for; however, I also realize that one man's errand ways does not mean that all men are bad. I guess the optimist in me looks for the good, the bad and the ugly seem to find me without me even looking for them:) Hope to see you in Jackson, we'll have a blast. Hi: Since I have yet to see the movie, I will of course reserve judgment until that point. However, it appears to me that some folks are not quite getting the message that Furuya Sensei is trying to convey. While he has admitted to not seeing the movie, he did say he viewed various documentaries and other articles detailing, and showing, historical facts about certain aspects of Japanese history that Furuya Sensei appears to be quite an expert on. In other words, you don't have to watch a 2 hour movie to confirm the photos of the props and armor shown in the documentaries were indeed the same inaccurate replicas used throughout the movie. Furuya Sensei was shown videos of the armor, swords, and swordwork used throughout the movie, and in his opinion, found a number of historical inaccuracies. What's so disingenuous about that? Any help is most appreciated! Thanks! Peter Harmony Wushu Academy" hi peter, scott winokur of www.kungfukc.com runs a tournament with KF, KMA, TCC, san chou and other arts every year. you might want to contact him and see how he does it. although i think the growth last year was beyond what was expected, causing delays, i think it was a well intentioned tourny. btw, if you choose to have some kind of masters demonstration, keep it short. i've seen them go on for two hours before the tournies ever got started. all the excitement for the competition kinda dwindles and you lose some fire. treat your officials (refs, runners, judges, organizers) well. they essentially run your show. you want them to come back. dont make the competitors wait too long to check in. pre-registration is nice. people love trophies and recognition. you want them to come back, too :). the biggest thing i hear from mixed tournaments is that the judging was unfair. so and so's students fared better because the majority of judges were: a. from his school (and therefore biased, supposedly) b. from the same style (and therefore biased, supposedly...or ignorant of the other style to the point they judged against the opposing competitor based on ignorance) c. inexperienced mix 'em up as best you can. offer a refereeing seminar for mixed martial arts tournament referees. if you do this, make sure the educators are well experienced and broadbased in their knowledge. otherwise, at least allow some time the morning of for a black belt/sash meeting to discuss the rules and recognition of other styles represented. most of all....good luck! :) take care, melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy www.cjmaa.com 1.573.673.2769 Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply www.cjmas.com 1.877.847.4072 --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Kim Bauman" To: Date: Wed, 17 Dec 2003 07:27:40 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] "in-fighting" Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net It is very easy to attain religious fervor in discussions about the pros and cons of various styles and schools. The variety is what makes life so enjoyable. I train at a school with no affiliation. I see individuals with the same rank with huge differences in the intensity at which they train. Perhaps it is an opportune moment for me to remember that it is best not to judge a martial artist solely by the school at which they train. (Kind of like judging a book by its cover, wouldn't you say?) Peter, just do a search on google for "single elimination" and then click on "images" and you will find a number of sample tournament forms online. For an 11 man tournament, use a 12 man competition set up, with the 11th guy facing no-one. He gets a "bye" in the first round and fights the winner of #9 vs #10 in the 2nd round. Don't mean this to be telling you what you should do, but just to give you another way to look at things. You have spent a great deal of time on what organizations should do for you, and what GM's should do for you. And I agree with much of what you have said over time. However, I have learned over time and through experience that if I am not happy with the status quo, then I should be examining myself instead of pointing fingers at others. I have found that if I am unhappy with a situation, the best way to resolve "my problem" is to take an action myself to change the situation. And in reality, your unhappiness is "your problem", just like my unhappiness is my problem. Now perhaps that unhappiness comes from someone else not fulfilling my expectations, but the only thing I have the power to change is my expectations. I know from a number of posts you seem very disapointed with GM Myung, the head of your org, not being able to come to your location. Seems to me that you have two courses of action to resolve the problem. You can go to him for your further training and testing, or you can find another org that will better meet your desires. The fact is that the only way you can influence change within an organization many times is by choosing to be more active and take on the responsibility to do the things that need doing, or conversly by leaving. Remember all martial arts are about self awareness and action, not talking. If it the sport nature of it, why doesn't Judo suffer the same fate? If it is the commercial aspect - you are paying to learn a set of skills what you do with them are up to you. What is the harm in that? Everyone who takes piano lessons won't be a concert pianist, why should everyone who takes martial arts be expected to be some sort of NHB billy badass? Second Question - Why were you first attracted to the Korean Martial Arts?
