I haven't studied muay thai but my first hapkido instructor cross-trained us in kyok too ki. From what he taught and what I see of Muay Thai on TV, KTK is the same, minus the cultural/religious elements. The training for the pure KTK students at my old dojang was very tough and progress was performance based. ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Frank Clay" To: Date: Sat, 20 Dec 2003 08:07:33 -0800 Subject: [The_Dojang] Mary Sue Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I can't remember her name, but I had my own Mary Sue run in when I was a youth... I remember distinctly being a young martial artist, in very good shape, and very strong... Most of the men black belts could not deal with either my speed or strength... and then she walked in. A lowly red belt, and I got to spar her. I figured I'd take it easy on her, and then proceeded to mop the dojang floor with my rear, at her using. The point being that sometimes there are the Mary Sue types, but some of those people train harder, and more often than one would expect, which was the case with her. Then there is this other Mary Sue type that is in my Shaolin class. She is one of my Sihing. She looks like she could not give a rip, and actually looks a tad soft physically... then you spar her and learn the hard way that she is a Kickboxing champ. Her name is Lisa, but I can't for the life of me remember her last name. I know several others, who all look like Mary Sue but pack a whallop and can dust the floor with many of the men. Mary Sue may appear to be a commercialization, but appearances can be the very deceiving. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net [satire alert] Gotta add my two cents worth on the Mary Sues, Billy Bobs, and Miltons. I too see these relcalcitrant goof-offs and am sickened. How dare they sully my master's dojang with their feeble and childish attempts to emulate REAL men and women. You know, the true martial artists whose homes and garages are stuffed with trophies and plaques of their conquests, who are on a first-name basis with their orthopedic surgeons, and placate the lesser among us by merely playing at having lives so they can devote 19 hours a day to training. Yes, the posers who think they can don a dobok and better themselves by showing up two or three hours a week despite the needs of their whiny, demanding families and bosses. Truly, they make me want to puke. But they're not the worst, oh no! You, Mr. Weller, have finally crossed the line. Yes, my friend, you have gone too far! To impugn the fine reputation and outstanding flavor and texture of Mrs. Brady's Candied Yams is beyond the pale. You are going to have to atone for your insolence. I'm callin' you out, boy! The next time you come to Wichita we're going to settle this. I think Kibon Poomsae at 60 paces will be a fitting method to teach you a lesson. Now if you will excuse me I have to go dig my exercise bike out of the garage. As long as they are setting and achieving goals they have set for themselves, I say ROCK ON... I love the martial arts. Although I dont care about being the ultimate warrior, I enjoy the more practical side of martial arts. I try and focus on my strengths and weaknesses not on everyone elses. (even though I can identify them) As an instructor, I hope to lead those who wish to practice martial arts in the right direction by setting a good example. I wont talk negative talk about other martial artists and I try to live the Tenents of TKD and the 5 point Code of conduct. I think I have a responsibility as an instructor to do this. In view of recent events, I chuckle that everyone is so suprised that there are people out there that are using the "business" of martial arts for personal gain and without integrity. Hey, there will always be those people. I've been burned enough myself. But I've chalked it up to a learning experience. The history of martial arts are full of examples of this type of activity. the "our style is best" mentality is just as strong as ever. What have I learned from all this? Train Harder with anyone who wants to train, Everyone has something to offer that I can learn from Differences of opinion are just that, whether your wright or wrong doesnt really matter, Does it? ( although I'm usually right, lol) If I keep training, the truth will reveal itself to me, even if someone else cant tell me or show me. So there's really no need to talk bad about other martial artists, just keep them training and no matter what rank or status they think they hold....training will reveal the truth. So to everyone out there, Keep training, I know I am,

Ms. Knorr, I hope you are still training hard, please let me know how things are with you (haven't heard from you for a while). Ray, thanks again for making this list available to us. I know it takes a lot of hard work (not to mention the headaches that come with moderating so many spirited souls). See you all in Jackson. As a token of goodwill to all, I am doing a free workshop for my little group of Polar Bears on January 24th here at my dojang, and all list members are welcome. I promise we won't go swimming:) We'll start on Friday evening, and work most of Saturday. Drive careful! Warmest personal regards, Rudy W. I have black belts in old school Tae kwon-Do & Hapkido. And when i say old school( i also call it classical TKD) I mean workout's where ya go behind the dojang and puke and are expected to get right back in line! with lots of full contact sparring. Including Boxing and Muay thai ! I also ran a club for 12year's and ran it the same way.(one of my black belts run's it know) I moved a few(sp?) years ago, and took a job were i am setting behind a desk. I work out at a Hapkido school now and am still looking for a good Tae kwon-Do school, but i am stuck on old style T.K.D. And so far i havent found it here yet. Look's like i will have to teach again to get it !! Anyway, i am overweight! now i have never been the skinney type mind you. but it's worse now( Day desk job, maybe) Runs in the family ? Yep it does. Am i going to throw 24 year's of martial arts away ? throw my black belts in the closet? Because the world say's i have to look a differen't way ? NO FREAKING WAY !!!! Now with that off my chest.I do agree with the pitty pat syndrome and even Mary sue and Billy bob i see alot of it now. more so than when i started that's for sure! But people have different reasons for doing martial arts. And it took a long time for me to understand that one!! Gotta run, Clint B. _________________________________________________________________ Grab our best dial-up Internet access offer: 6 months @$9.95/month. http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Sat, 20 Dec 2003 15:10:58 -0600 From: "bmac2" To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Happy Holiday's Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Greetings to all; A very Merry Christmas, Kwanzaa (sp?) and Happy Hanukkah from all of us here at Braeswood Martial Arts.
