I've been on the mat with you, I'd want my sniper rifle from at least 600 meters or more. That would be close enough! I agree with you on The Last Samurai. For entertainment, it was fun. I was not there for a history lesson, but there for fun and I really enjoyed it. I've studied enough about the Samurai and Japan to know that the Samurai were not as romantic as made out to be at times. (Bloodthirsty killers some of them...) But what is wrong with having a story based on a hero that lives up to an ideal code of honor? Gives us all a good example to live by. Happy New Years All! I have not seen many of his techniques but what I have seen is decent. As far as being a high ranking TKD black belt... I know he was certified by Korea Taekwondo ChungDoKwan. I saw his stone certificate, but I'm thinking it only said 5th dan. Maybe 6th. I know he converted to JungDoKwan, or at least his wife did, as she has an Instrucotr's certificate and I'm thinking 5th dan. I have not seen his. Hers is consistent with a Korean I used to train with who got his 9th dan through them, and the certs look the same, if memory serves. As far as being Tang Soo Do... I sincerely doubt it. When he wanted to film the the Pyung Ahns for a KTMS set, I did all the color belt forms, and Master Steve Bowman did the Yudanja forms. I asked him about OhSipSaBo once, and I was told that he used to do those forms but no longer did them. One cannot be TSD without practicing and knowing TSD forms. On a side note, I was not pleased with my performance because my feet kept sticking to the mat, and asked to re-film certain ones, as I wanted to make sure that I looked decent on tape. He said no, but then the tape was never made. That was like three years ago. It was hot, and a lot of work for nothing. If one looks at black belt as a matter of achieving a rank, then I have no doubt he is a black belt. If one looks at a black belt as one who has refined their character and seeks self perfection, then no, he is not a black belt. He holds the rank of Sabumnim, but I would not consider him as such. I would liken more to one who plays at martial art. Hope this helps, Frank --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 16:36:56 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] xtreme martial arts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I guess my biggest fallacy with the xtreme martial arts lies in my perception of what extreme martial arts means... when I think of the words extreme and martial arts the vision of gymnastics and form competition and point sparring doesn't fit my perception... when I equate these words extreme and martal arts I envision more like the no holds barred competitions where guys are beating each other to a pulp but still not giving up, or a soldier sneaking up on someone and using his skills to take someone out of the game, or a person in a parking lot using his martial arts training to disable some gang banger who is trying to injure him and his.. it seems to me like the word extreme conjures up images of blood and willpower in my mind,, not bright satin uniforms and incessant screaming... But to each his own, I think if I tried to kiap that long and loud I would probably just end up farting on myself...or worse!! What if your club no longer provides for your needs but being loyal you can't bring yourself to leave? I think I know the answer already but am interested in others opinions. I have been involved with my club for eight years and recently tested for 2nd Dan. My club may fit in to what has been described here as a Mcdojang. We cater to youngsters and civilian type adults (most of whom view Taekwondo as just another weekly activity--like a kids piano lesson). We do promote respect, etc. and try to provide the basics but there is a lack of athleticism (we do no conditioning for example and very little developmental stretching - we work forms mostly. Classes are only an hour long and much of the time there is little room in the dojang for independent practice). The real void has become apparent as a black belt. I don't receive the training that I feel I need at this point, but I also don't feel qualified to criticise. I certainly don't feel qualified to instruct others at this point. Its almost as if our club awards us a belt rank first in order to motivate us to then go back and work to earn it, if that makes any sense. I'm willing to put in the work certainly, but without guidance its tough. I'm now thinking of doubling up with another school in Hapkido. I think I can learn things that I can take back to my TKD club. Any thoughts out there? Rather than re-inventing the wheel, would some of you esteemed DDers be willing to provide examples that you use? I'm looking for something without large/complicated words for use by 6-10 year olds....any info would be greatly appreciated.
