For example, the classic strict barbell curls with arms across a preacher bench. Obviously, this is designed to isolate the biceps. The fact that the only joint moving is the elbow is the red flag. Now, if you're trying to get a great biceps peak that's one thing, but it would never translate greatly to an activity that involves full-body engagement. >> Hmmm. Let's not ignore the aesthetic aspect of great biceps. Some of us appreciate the effort expended in this area both on and off the mat. ;-) It definitely translates to full-body engagement... o:) Sharon --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 14:26:09 -0600 (CST) From: To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] =?iso-8859-1?Q?Re:_20th_Internationale--Travel_Arrgs.?= Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Jere: After you posted to BUDO-SEEK I went on to mention possible travel arrangments and costs. I pass this along only because if someone is interested in organizing some kind of effort to get a number of folks from the Midwest down to Jackson for what promises to be a landmark event, I would be willing to pitch-in. Folks can contact me here or at my e-mail address.I'm thinking along the line of a rented-car-pool. Folks who have been around Chicago will remember US 30 Dragway ads featuring the"Chi-town Hustler" racer from back in the 60-s. Some see this as abandonment on my part; however, it is simply a matter of allowing my students to grow into mature martial artists... it is certainly not that I care less. ...." Somewhere along the line, then, I must have missed the boat in all of this. What you are describing sounds very much like the philosophy that I employ with my students and the way I would expect a good teacher to deal with me. To my way of thinking teachers set the standards, raise the bars, show the way and provide guidance, but in the end the student (and the teacher ) must each do their own work for themselves. Why is this so hard for people to pick-up on? If this was golf, or baseball or any other activity in Human experience that a person wants to get good at, in the end it takes work and planning and plenty of both. Why is it when we come to Martial arts somehow the teacher is suppose to spoon-feed at one end while not dominating or micro-managing at the other end. The student wants the commitment of a school within comfortable travel distance without swearing the sort of commitment that would support such a school. I have to tell you, Rudy, that after your visit last Summer, I lost a lot of students and dumped a bunch more. Guess what? I don't feel bad about it in the least. The Bible says something about not casting pearls before swine, but I am amazed with how close I came to making pig-farming a lifetime occupation! Now I'm back to writing and research and will be hooking-up with one of the local schools where I can get back to doing what I like best. My students? Yeah, they probably won't get much of my time. Too bad. Their loss. They could have at least shown a lot more appreciation or commitment. As it is, Lifes' too damn short. I've yet to find any historical information on that.<< Yep, I do. That happened about the time I graduated for high school in 1972 and was worshipping the likes of Arnold Schwarznegger and Franco Columbo. Lifters found out that instead of pressing the weight up, you could actually drop underneath the bar by bending the lower back. Eventually the lift came to resemble something more like a clean and jerk than a clean and press. This back bend was disallowed in competition. The funny thing was that soviet judges were far more forgiving of back bend in soviet lifters than with lifters from other countries. It probably happened with all nationalities but the Russians dominated world weightlifting at that time so they always got blamed for it. It got to be so political that eventually everyone agreed that the only solution was to drop the lift from competition. I guess all sports have their own form of politics. --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Braeswood Martial Arts" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: jackson Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 16:35:17 -0600 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mississippi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Whalen" To: "dojang digest" Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2004 3:09 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: jackson > Please excuse my ignorance as I am still a "Jackson Virgin" but that > would be Jackson MI,MS,TN ????.... > > Respectfully, > michael whalen KSWnut > _______________________________________________ > The_Dojang mailing list, 1500 members > The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net > Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource > Standard disclaimers apply > http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Richard Tomlinson" To: Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2004 17:38:00 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] (the Dojang) Training and loyalty Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Rudy, you hit the nail right on the head about how few students realize practicing the same techniques over and over again is the way of learning. I'm moving into a house and would like to use the basement as a workout space. The problem is, I would like to practice my kicks including jumping ones and I don't really want to do this on the cement floor because I find it too hard on my knees. Does anyone have any ideas for constructing an inexpensive floor that would add some cushion or give but not add a lot of height?
