I'm moving into a house and would like to use the basement as a workout space. The problem is, I would like to practice my kicks including jumping ones and I don't really want to do this on the cement floor because I find it too hard on my knees. Does anyone have any ideas for constructing an inexpensive floor that would add some cushion or give but not add a lot of height?" 1-2" Try swain and/or zebra for a pad and cover system (like the mcdojangs all have). Works out to $1.50 to $2 per square foot depending on the pad thickness and mils of the cover you select. YOu can also accomplish this with foam insulation and a canvas cover, but the canvas will stain... 5" lay a 2"x4" subfloor at 2' on center (or 16" for a tighter floor with less spring) and drill in 3/4" Plywood. Sand and stain to your choosing. Been a while since I estimated the cost. Good Luck! Charles Richards www.mojakwan.com __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! As for the section: "Part of the reason defensive gun use isn't covered in the media may be simple news judgment. If a news editor faces two stories, one with a dead body on the ground and another where a woman brandished a gun and the attacker ran away, no shots fired, almost anyone would pick the first story as more newsworthy. In 2002, some 90 percent of the time when people used guns defensively, they stopped the criminals simply by brandishing the gun." There's an old motto taught to journalism students: "If it bleeds, it leads." Cross-cultural studies would also sustain some of these biases involved. For instance, in Israel, where guns are commonplace, it is very rare to have incidents of firearms related crime such as robbery, homicides, etc. It is also very uncommon to have accident related deaths such as those addressed in the article. Regarding that 10 month black belt ad, I find it amazing that people would fall for this - I don't understand how people could think they are worthy of a black belt in only 10 months time. Onto the making money issue. I think I have mentioned in the past that I work full time during the day and teach 4 classes every night, and I have been doing this for 3 years now. It is starting to drain me so I'm looking for a way to reduce the time I am investing in one or the other - I would prefer to quit my full time job if I can find ways to generate sufficient income from teaching. Most months I break even, financially, but occasionally I have had to tap my personal savings account in order to pay some of the expenses. These are a couple of the reasons why I'm considering a change to the things that I listed in my previous post. -Chris --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "Dunn, Danny J GARRISON" To: "'the_dojang@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2004 13:47:15 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] Shaolin Forms Course Book set Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just wondered if anyone has read or is familiar with a set of 5 volumes entitled Shaolin Gungfu: A Forms Course, translated by Liu Hai Chao. The name is romanized differently in different volumes also as Liu Haikae and Lui Haiqin. Appears to have been published in the early 1990's. Set appears to have a large number of forms, both empty hand and armed with line drawings of position and paraqgraph description of the movement and execution. Is this set a good representation of shaolin system or systems? How comparable are the forms to those currently being done in the US? Thanks in advance for any comments. Thus the fair and balanced. > I don't personally claim to have a solid answer on the issue of gun violence > or the second ammendment, ... One wonders (out loud) why we hear of "gun violence" in the mainstream media yet nothing about fist violence or knife violence or ballbat violence or ?? . Real bias in action. Violence is violence. Guns cannot be violent. Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com P.S. Also see Lott's More Guns, Less Crime. Or Kleck's work. I have tackled this problem a couple of different ways. One way is to put down carpet. The commercial grade carpet will work fine. But the real key in making the floor more comfortable to work out on is a quality, thick (1 inch) pad. You can also layer 2 thinner pads with a layer of fiber paper (what I used) or some other tough fiberous material between the two pads to give you more firmness but still good protection. The second solution is to place a series of 1 x 4's at 2 foot intervals across the floor. Then add 1 x 4 blocks at 2 foot intervals between each row of 1 x 4's to create a 2 foot x 2 foot hatch pattern across the room. Then you can put down a second floor of 3/4 inch plywood down and screw it to the 1 x 4 spacers. Just make sure that the plywood always overlaps the ends of the 1 x 4 lathing. Lap the plywood by half in each adjacent row so the end seams are offset by 4 feet across the floor. This creates a pretty decent floor with some give to it. You can increase the give again, by laying down carpet pad under the 1 x 4's if you want a judo dojo type spring to the whole floor. Sand the plywood and paint or polyurathane if you like to work out on a wood floor. Either way only adds 1.25 to just over 1.5 inches to the heigth of the floor. Hope this helps.
